Announcing the PBIS Check-In, Check-Out Program

The PBIS Check-In, Check-Out (CICO) program is designed for students whose behavior

may be getting in the way of their school success. Based upon data, a child who is nomi-

nated for CICO is paired with a coach who meets with the child twice daily. We will be ini-

tiating this program at Woodview School with a few select students beginning in January,

2012.

In the morning, the coach meets with the student, reminds them of expected behaviors and

gets their day started on a positive note. The coach gives the student a point sheet that they

will show to each of their teachers at the end of each period. The teacher’s role is to

pre-prompt for expected behaviors at the start of the class and to rate the student’s behavior

as an “area to work on”, “okay”, or a “great job!” at the end of class.

In the afternoon, the coach meets with the student and reviews the student’s performance for

that day and provides them with feedback to assist them with improving their performance.

The student takes a copy of the report home for their parent to sign and return the next day.

Every two weeks, the CICO team reviews each student’s data and assesses their progress.

The program is designed for students to gradually be able to self-monitor their behavior and

to be phased out of the program over time.

Students who participate in this program will benefit from increased adult attention, frequent

feedback, additional positive reinforcement, and increased home to school communication.

If your student has been nominated for this CICO program, you will be notified by Pam

Marks, the PBIS Coordinator at Woodview School.

STAY HEALTHY THIS FLU SEASON

TIPS FROM THE D46 HEALTH COORDINATORS

To help keep illnesses and flu to a minimum, we are asking that all students and families follow

these simple steps:

1. PLEASE keep sick children home from school until they are fever free for 24 hours without

medication, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin). A fever is considered above 99.5

degrees, and their cough should be gone!

2. Teach your children to COVER THEIR COUGHS and wash hands often. Hand sanitizers are

also effective.

3. The CDC recommends that ALL school-age children receive flu vaccinations. Seasonal flu

vaccines are available now.

4. Prepare in advance. Have alternative childcare providers available if you cannot stay home or

pick up your sick child at school. Sick students cannot remain at school!

5. PLEASE report your child’s absence to school and tell us if you suspect flu. (just saying “sick”

doesn’t help us track illness trends in classrooms.)

6. Make sure we have current phone numbers to reach you and your emergency contacts.

The 3rd and 4th graders have been going through fitness stations as well and have been doing a great job of it. Next week we are going to teach them about health. Some topics will be: Why eating healthy is important, why it is important to exercise, other ways to exercise besides playing physical activities, and many more interesting topics for young children to learn about.

P.E. UPDATE

Over the past several weeks, the kindergartners, 1st graders and 2nd graders have been working on their throwing and catching skills. They have been learning to throw all different shapes and size balls. They also have been doing different fitness stations and understanding why fitness is so important. Let's hope they bring home some ideas of fitness and use them at home!

NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM

Hello Woodview families!

The Spring Concerts for 1st-4th grade are coming up in April! Full Day Kindergarten is up and moving. We are moving and singing to develop body awareness, and beat competency. Students are working together and performing a few folk dances. This will help the class work to-gether to perform as an “ensemble” later in the year. First grade is continuing sing with “solfege” (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do). In addition to using solfege, your student is playing instruments as a soloist in classroom games. This is teaching them how the independent musician fits in with the group to make music. The concert dates are posted below. Please mark your calendars. Second Grade is starting to work in small groups to create music. This is tapping into their individual creative side, while showing me their understanding of classroom concepts. The concert dates are posted below. Please mark your calendars. Third grade is continuing their work with recorder. Please find a place for your students to practice at home for at least 10 minutes a day! They are just working on 3 notes (B-A-G), so when they get comfortable with that, 3rd grade recorder will be easy! Remember, The number one issue is the holes on the recorder are not covered properly. The number two issue is blowing too hard. The concert dates are posted below. Please mark your calendars. Fourth Grade is still playing recorder, and starting to use it as an ensemble instrument in class. Fourth graders should know and be comfortable with playing 5 notes on the recorder (G, A, B, C, D). We will play xylophones, drums, and recorders all together in class. Please read the third grade message above if your students are still struggling with recorder! The concert dates are posted below. Please mark your calendars. Mark your calendars: The 3rd and 4th grade concert this year is Thursday April 12th at 7:00 pm The 1st and 2nd grade concert this year is Thursday April 26th at 7:00 pm Please check my website after winter break for updates, and lyrics for the concert! http://www.d46.k12.il.us/~smithtyler/SmithMusicClass/Home.html Please e-mail if you have any questions! Sincerely, Tyler Smith [email protected]

Art News

I am always looking for more parent volunteers to help out in the art room at various times throughout

the year. If you are interested in helping please contact me at [email protected].

There are different supplies that the art room is always looking for: Baby wipes, pencils, glitter, kids

treats and prizes, masking tape, large zip lock bags, tissues, washable markers.

Kindergarten

The students are combining all that they learned from the first few lessons. They learned about

different types of lines, and about different types of shapes, geometric shapes and organic shapes. With their

knowledge of lines and shapes, they will be creating an abstract picture of a person. The students looked at

the artist Joan Miro for inspiration to create the project.

First Grade

The students are doing a continuation lesson from the first project. In the first lesson, they learned

about the artist, Wassily Kandinsky and how his artwork is inspired by music. The students learned that Kand-

insky’s artwork is abstract.

The students listened to music and drew how they felt about the music with lines and shapes. While

listening to the music, they needed to choose the color they felt went along with the song. They were

challenged to make their artwork look abstract.

Now they will be choosing their favorite abstract picture and enlarging it for this next lesson. The

students are introduced to a new art media, paint.

Second Grade

The students are finishing learning all about the cultural celebration of “The Day of the Dead” or “Dia

De Los Muertos.” The students listened to a story all about that day and learned about some of the food that

is made, some Spanish words, and the cultural activities that are done on The Day of the Dead. The students

learned that The Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrating the life of past loved one, honoring the spirits. The

students created their own sugar skull and decorated it with flowery shapes and designs. The Second Graders

will be using a new art media, chalk pastels, to decorate their artwork.

Third Grade

The students are finishing learning about the artist, Georges Seurat, and how he created the art style

called Pointillism. The students learned that Seurat loved going to the circus to get his inspiration for his

artwork. The students drew their own circus animals and used the pointillism technique to fill their artwork

with color. The third grade will also learn about color blending and how one color looks like next to another

color. After the students paint their circus animals, they will create a poster to advertise their animal so people

will come see it in the circus.

Fourth Grade

The students are finishing learning about the artist, M. C. Escher, and how he created the art style

called Tessellations. The students looked at several artworks done by Escher to inspire them to create their

own tessellation. This is a cross disciplinary lesson that teaches the students about art and math. The Fourth

Graders needed to use their imagination to come up with a picture for their tessellation and make it into a

pattern.

Our 2011-2012 Market Day grocery

fundraising program is underway!

Clip & save Tyson Project A+ labels.

Turn in the labels to school. Your

school redeems them for cash. Each

label is worth $.26.

Here is another way to earn money for

Woodview. Simply clip the Box Tops

from your favorite General Mills

products and send them to school with

your child!

Chef Tony says, “”Brrrr,

soups and other hot meals

from Market Day are sure

to warm you through and

through this winter. Check

out the new flyer!”

Did you know that Woodview

collects Campbell’s soup labels? The

labels are worth points and must have

the UPC code in order to be used. The

points can be redeemed for books, gym

equipment, and other items for our

school. Each teacher has a box in the

classroom to collect labels and box tops!

In this season of gratitude and giving, I'd

like to personally thank all who have

supported our Market Day grocery

fundraiser this fall, be it by ordering

products or by volunteering your time in

support of our sales. Special thanks this

month to Woodview School and to their

large number of volunteers. Extra special

thanks to Cyndie Fidanze, Sharon Wilson,

Irena Braun, the Avon PTO board, and to

Stephanie Weatherly who are the district's

individual school Market Day chairs. A

final thanks to Sue Walker and Janine

Adams, the Meadowview secretaries who

help us out behind the "Market Day

scenes." This fundraiser wouldn’t run as

smoothly as it does if it weren't for the

efforts of all of those mentioned above. A

final note...Remember-our MD sales are

monthly; our first sale of 2012 will be

January 21st. Look for the January flyer to

come out after winter break. Hope to see

you at a sale soon!
