“LAGUARDIA LINK”SUBWAY SHUTTLETransportation advocacy groups

Riders Alliance and Global GatewayAlliance (GGA) hailed GovernorCuomo’s announcement of arebranded “LaGuardia Link” shuttlebus that will connect airport visitorswith the subway—an idea that the twogroups had originally proposed lastNovember. The rebranded shuttlebus will operate as a Select Bus Ser-vice route and will replace the currentQ70 bus, offering airport visitors andtransit riders a more convenient, in-tuitive way to take public transit toLaGuardia. Per Governor Cuomo’s

announcement, “LaGuardia Link”service will begin in September 2016.

John Raskin, Executive Direc-tor of the Riders Alliance, said,“Governor Cuomo is upending yearsof conventional wisdom that saidyou couldn’t get to LaGuardia eas-ily by transit. LaGuardia Link willmake public transit a more intuitive, convenient option for anyone flyinginto or out of LaGuardia. This is asimple, cost-effective way to im-prove public transit access to theairport, and to encourage morepeople to consider transit when

they’re headed to LaGuardia.”The two groups cautioned that the

success of the rebranded shuttle buswill depend in part on how the PortAuthority labels and advertises the busin terminals and to airport travelers, andon how aggressively the MTA marketsthe new service to transit riders.

Additionally, the two organizationscontinue to support one element of theproposal not adopted in the Governor’sannouncement: the proposal to makethe shuttle bus free, a cost-effectivemove that would attract ridership to thecity’s transit system.

SUNNYSIDERS MARKFLAG DAY WITH NYC’SSOLE PARADE OF THE DAY

by Mary Caulfield

On Saturday, June 11th hundreds ofpeople gathered in Sunnyside to cheer32 groups that paraded up GreenpointAvenue’s gentle rise from 41st to SabbaPark at Queens Boulevard and 50thStreet. The parade and program of com-memoration mark Sunnyside’s 48th an-nual Flag Day Parade.

A pair of drumsticks from theSunnyside Drum Corp beat a decorouscount of four then one percussion in-strument after another fell in. Thetempo gave rise to the peal of marchingbells playing the simple, schoolroomtune of “My Country ’Tis of Thee.” Theparade had begun.

Musical groups included the I.S. 125Chorus, Long Island City and FrancisLewis high school marching bands, andthe County Armagh Pipe Band. Groupssuch as the Veterans of Foreign Wars,John Vincent Daniels Jr. Post 2813, theLadies Auxiliary, the 108th Police Pre-cinct Community Council, the ClubFolklorico San Rafael and Boy ScoutTroop and Cub Pack 390 marched be-tween the musical units. Finally, Avia-tion High School Color Guard and DrumLine and PS 199 swept paraders andwatchers into the park.

Speakers in Sabba Park included

Jimmy Van Bramer, Majority Leader ofthe NYC Council, Daniel Dromm of thesame organization, Catherine Nolan ofthe NYS Assembly and Michael Gianaris,of the NYS Senate. Pastor Brian Dowd ofQueen of Angels prayed for a blessing onthe assembly.

The parade is a “celebration of com-munity pride” according to its organizer,Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside. They carryon a tradition begun by Joseph Sabba, whofounded the drum corp and parade be-cause “Music starts a kid off on the rightnote.” Joseph Sabba also published theWoodside Herald for decades. His grand-daughter Sherilyn Jo Sabba continues thisservice to the community after her father’spassing in 2009.

After the prayers, songs and words ofremembrance, Council Member VanBramer said that of the many ceremoniesand dedications that mark his work, FlagDay in Sunnyside ranks high. “It is a smallyet profound moment of remembrance.”

And indeed amid the scrubbing of roadtraffic, the grinding of the 7 train overheadand the whining descent of jets intoLaGuardia Airport, the sliver of botaniclife, granite markers and benches con-tained the solemn gratitude of diversecitizens for a few moments under stars andstripes rippling above.
