LIBRARY’S LITERACY ZONE WELCOME CENTER OF QUEENS

Dear Editor,Devastating budget cuts could

spell the end of our belovedSunnyside branch library…

It has come to my attention that

Letters To

The EditorThe following letters are the opinionsof its author and not necessarily those

of the Woodside Herald.

VAN BRAMER UNITES WITH QUEENS RESIDENTS TO SAVE LIBRARIES

the Sunnyside library may be in fora knockout punch from the CityCouncil’s budget vote in mid-June.A severe cut of $16.9M, effective7/1/10, is slated for a vote on top ofthe previous $11.5M cut. They al-ways look to cut funding to thelibrary system on the first rounds-it’s a New York tradition. Why, Inever could figure. Books and chil-dren are our future. We must fightback- a large outcry from the com-munity is needed. You can help

with a letter, email or call to theMayor or representative. Our rep-resentative has promised that theSunnyside library will not closebut something drastic will be com-ing if the latest cut goes thru.

The Sunnyside branch libraryis the hub of this quaint but vibrantcommunity supplying hundreds ofbooks per day, serving 150 chil-dren and 75 Seniors on average, not counting the mothers and fa-thers who bring their children there.

Where would the children go if theSunnyside library closed? I can’timagine. The seniors would be lostwithout the services of the library-the DVDs, the informative and en-tertaining programs. It’s just a greatplace to be. There are 14 computersfor use that are booked every day.Think of your favorite program atthe library. Was it summer reading, financial market programs, or thegreat picture book time for the kids? What would happen to the spirit of

this neighborhood without them? The library just went thru a

million dollar plus renovation giv-ing it a welcomed new look. Whata financial loss this would be. Theloss of personnel would be dread-ful, as the highly educated staffwould be forced to change careersto survive. They would never con-sider this career again. These peoplewe depend on for advice would notbe part of our lives again.

Dan Farrey

On Tuesday, May 25th Coun-cil Member Jimmy Van Bramer,Chair of the Cultural Affairs, Li-braries & International IntergroupRelations Committee and QueensLibrary CEO Thomas W. Galanteled a rally on the steps of City Hallin support of urging the restora-tion of proposed budget cuts to theQueens Library system. NewYork City’s Executive Budget forFY ’11 would reduce funding tothe Queens Library system by$16.9 million, threatening our li-

brary service hours and more than400 library staff jobs.

Council Member Van Bramerwas joined by more than 400Queens Library supporters, trust-ees, friends of the Library and rep-resentatives of DC37 and Local1321. The boisterous rally illus-trated the great determination byQueens Residents to fight and voicetheir concerns for their libraries.

City Council Members whojoined Council Member VanBramer in the rally included Julissa

Ferreras, Danny Dromm, DanHalloran, Peter Koo, Peter ValloneJr., Mark Weprin, KarenKoslowitz, James Sanders, LeroyComrie, Vincent Gentile, andJumaane Williams.

“Libraries are an essential partof our communities,” said Coun-cil Member Van Bramer, in ad-dressing the crowd. “These edu-cational havens provide vital re-sources during such pressing times- now more than ever New York-ers need libraries.” P

Queens Library’s LiteracyZone Welcome Center opened itsarms and doors to City CouncilSpeaker Christine Quinn, CityCouncilmember Jimmy VanBramer, chair of the Cultural Af-fairs, Libraries & InternationalIntergroup Relations Committee, and Rev. Mitchell Taylor of theEast River Development Allianceon May 20. They had an opportu-nity to meet with some of theliteracy students. The students hadmade piñatas in their honor.

Queens Library’s LiteracyZone Welcome Center offersadult literacy, classes in Englishas a Second Language and fam-ily literacy programs. At the Wel-come Center, Queens Library as-sists with referrals in other areasof library customers’ lives: healthcare, housing problems, socialservices, tax services. Queens Li-brary is the only public library tobe a lead agency on this kind ofproject. Specially trained, dedi-cated outreach staff and counse-

lors are taking the time and havethe training to sit down with pa-trons and find out what they “re-ally” need. A big part of theagenda is eliminating the barri-ers that keep people from enrich-ing their lives, whether thatmeans improving English-lan-guage conversation or getting ahearing aid, or simply learninghow to navigate the bureaucracyto access help.

The Literacy Zone WelcomeCenter is funded by a grant from

the New York State EducationDepartment, to help improve theeconomic futures for the resi-

dents of LIC/Astoria by helpingthem to improve their educationsand job skills.

TOWN HALL MEETINGON THE PROPOSED

SUNNYSIDE/WOODSIDEREZONING

On Wednesday, May 26th Council Member Van Bramer hosteda town hall, bringing City Planning Officials and CommunityBoard 2 together with Residents to discuss the proposed rezoningplan in Sunnyside and Woodside, Queens. The town hall stylemeeting provided a much needed opportunity for communitymembers to express their questions and concerns about rezoning. The proposed plan, which has had some residents confused as towhat exactly it entails, was broken down in a detailed PowerPointpresentation by City Planning, complete with pictures of thestructural differences allowed by current zoning and the proposedrezoning.

In a continuing effort to bring city agencies and residentstogether, Council Member Van Bramer facilitated and encour-aged an open line of communication between the community andthe agency on the rezoning. Over 100 residents attended themeeting and listened to the proposed plan and many residentsspoke, sharing their ideas and concerns.

“I want the members of our community to have a say in whathappens in their neighborhood, which is why I have hosted regulartown hall meetings and will continue to do so,” said CouncilMember Van Bramer. “Government should be accessible, ac-countable and responsive – these meetings are apart of ourcontinuous efforts to make this possible.”

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION PRESERVATION ACT INTRODUCED IN CONGRESSWould Provide $345.25 Million to NY/NJ /CT Transit & Would Reverse MTA Service Cuts and Layoffs

A bill introduced in Con-gress by New York’s two Sena-tors as well as five others wouldreverse transit service cuts andlayoffs ordered by the MTAby making available nearly$350 million in new federalfunding, Local 100 PresidentJohn Samuelsen announced to-day. It would also help theMTA hold the line on futurefare increases.

New York’s mass transitsystem has been devastated bya consistent lack of funding bythe City, State, and the Federalgovernment, Samuelsen said. The Public TransportationPreservation Act would cor-rect that, and reverse the ser-vice cuts and layoffs that aretaking such a huge toll on tran-sit systems around the coun-try. I urge every New Yorker

to congratulate our SenatorsSchumer and Gillibrand ontheir important stand.

Keep America Moving(www.keepamericamoving.org),a national coalition of mem-bers of transit unions, environ-mentalists, and faith-basedgroups, has lobbied hard to seethe Act introduced in Congress, sponsoring a major rally inWashington on April 27th thatbrought 3,000 transit workersto Washington, DC. That rallyfeatured the Rev. Jesse Jack-son, who proclaimed thatÒmass transit jobs are greenjobs. Dan Miner, of the SierraClub, told another KeepAmerica Moving rally in NewYork City that environmental-ists and transit workers mustmake common cause to reducegreenhouse gas emissions and

dependence on foreign oil bytaking cars off the road.

In a press release, Sen.Schumer said that Mass transitis the very lifeblood of the NewYork and our ability to rebuildthe economy and get peopleback to work is linked to a fullyfunded and affordable system.

Sen.Gillibrand said: “Thisemergency funding is badlyneeded to maintain strong andaffordable transit systems thatget workers to work, studentsto school, and keep oureconomy moving.”

The MTA’s service cutshave begun to be phased inover the last several weeks andadditional cuts are expected tocontinue into June.

This is a last and best chanceto reverse these service cuts,Samuelsen said. With the lead-

ership of the New York delega-tion and aggressive support andaction from members of KeepAmerica Moving around the

country, weÕll get it done – notonly for New York, but forevery other major urban masstransit system.
