A Weekend offun at
Over 500 Devon Scouts join up for a weekendof fun and adventure..
For over ten years now andpossibly a lot longer (not sureexactly) Devon Scouts have beenstarting a new Scouting Year witha fun packed camping weekend atWoodlands Theme Park just onthe outskirts of Dartmouth,Devon.
Woodlands theme park is wellknown locally and has steadilygained a reputation for a great placeto have fun and do all the greatthings that Scouts seem to be able todo so well.
Scouts came from all four corners ofDevon covering the rugged coast ofthe north, the wind swept regions ofthe moor, the ferocious wilds of thesouth plus a couple from Torbay..
Many groups took up the option tocamp the extra night on Friday and aspecial mention must go out to 1stFremington Air Scouts who broughtalong there fancy new tent and spentmany an hour making sure it was

hundred yards away all you couldhear was the sound of happy voicesand the distinct smell of a classiccamp breakfast so even if you didnot have your maps and compassjust following your ears and nosewas all the tools you required.
Right from the off you could see thatall the Scouts were eager to get intothe park and wait for the fun tobegin, but first the formalities had tobe done and that started off with thewashing up and getting intoUniform ready for the flag break.
As this was proceeding the mediateam had a chance to catch up withour special guest of the day TimKidd and the soon to be newestrecipient of the Gold Chief Scoutaward Joe from 1st Fremington soafter managing to get ourselves lostin the maze of roads and turnings up

to the camp site from the main parkonce again we quickly set aboutguiding Tim around another maze oftents and guide ropes meeting asmany scouts and leaders as wepossibly could.
Tim and Joe went around getting anunderstanding of where everyonehad come from, what they had beingdoing and what they got out ofscouting.
There were some great stories fromScouts and Leaders saying howfantastic Scouting was, what theyget out of it and why the Scouts justlove doing all the great stuff they

manage to. One group’s latest recruitwas apparently born with a DevonScarf on - Which is more than canbe said for the media team stilltrying to get hold of theirs.
We were told stories of gettingstranded on Islands, years offundraising to build a new hut andadventures of having to resort totrainload map reading skills whenSat Navs had lost Dartmouth for ashort while.
Before we knew it time for Flagbreak and for the days adventures tosoon begin.

So besides the fluorescent greenshoes and the clashing pink sockswho exactly was this guy dashingaround our camp talking to everyonehe could poking his nose in andtrying to find out about all the greatthings the Scouts get up to in Devon.
Well Tim Kidd is the ChiefCommissioner for England andspends much of his volunteeringrole speaking at engagements;representing England Scouting inpolicy making; and supporting thestrategic management anddevelopment of the Movement.
So a pretty influential guy.
Tim has been a Scout for 40 years –and there has not been a momentsince he was eight years old that I hehas not been a Scout and feels thatScouting is part of his very being.
Tim says that “Scouting changed hislife as a young person; it helped himto try activities that he may never ofotherwise even contemplated. Hehas stood on the top of mountainssimply because he was a Scout. “
Tim is also operations director ofJanet(UK) an Education andResource Network and says that“Scouting gave me skills andconfidence that I use as an adult – infact I wouldn’t have the job that Ihave today if it wasn’t for what Ihave learned in Scouting.” Provingthat scouting really does give you agreat start in life and can look greaton your CV. Helping to open doorsand letting you face challenges youmay not of otherwise attempted.
Tim says “Its odd but by being amember of Scouting you feel thatyou are some how connected bysome invisible thread that joinsevery one of the 28 Million wordwide scouts and by understandingthis it allows young people thechance to grow understandthemselves and hopefully make theworld a better place”
All of this was demonstrated by thesmiley faces of over 500 youngpeople this weekend at Woodlandsand Devon Scouts were extremelygrateful for Tim for taking the timeto visit us and getting to know someof our great Scouts and leaders.
You can find out more about Tim onthe Scout Website.http://scouts.org.uk/ccblog/96/tims-takeover-whats-it-all-about

Reaching the pinnacle of the ScoutSection by completing your GoldChiefs Scout Award is no mean feat.
It is only reached by completing anumber of challenges that covers thecomplete ethos of the movementfrom Fitness to Community work toOutdoor and Adventure.
So I am sure that we can speak foreveryone in attendance at flag breakwhen Joe from 1st Fremingtonreceived his award that we wereextremely proud of our fellowScouter for reaching this fantasticmilestone.
Joe was due to officially receive hisaward signed by UK Chief ScoutBear Grylls from Tim Kidd Chiefcommissioner for England but as asign of gratitude Tim deferred this toJoes Scout Leader Jim Green. It washim and his assistant leaders thathelped mentor Joe through theprocess and guide him through all
the hard work.
To get away from the formalitiesand in line with the fun andadventure side it was quickly off toone of the most awesome rides inthe park as Joe was again joined byTim and Jim and the process wasrepeated as they plunged through 3floors of theme park as shown abovein the photo..

Sometime waiting in line for a ride canget a little tiresome so we have foundsome things to do whilst waiting in a lineat a theme park. Although we would notrecommend that you attempt to carryout any of them.
1. Play dominoes (people edition.)
2. Act like you’re already on the ride.Throw your hands up and scream.
3. Say, “STOP FOLLOWING ME!!” at thepeople behind you.
4. Act like you are stalking the people infront of you. Look all sketchy and suchwhile glancing cautiously at them everyonce in a while.
5. Get a notepad and pen. Stare at people awhole lot and take notes.
6. Right before going on the ride, kiss theground; cry; and talk about how you hope tosee solid ground again soon.
6. Start singing “Lean On Me” extremelyloudly with the intention of gettingeveryone to join in.
7. Ask someone to carry you.
8. Get all the way to the entrance of the ride, mess up your hair, and act like you just gotoff the ride. Go backwards through the lineand try to get all the way to the end. Thewhole time talk about how fun it was.
9. Come disguised as a really old lady andwalk at .00001 mph through the line.
10. Start looking at the sky pretending thereis something up there and see how manyothers you can get to copy you.
Of course none of these are endorsed orrecommended by the Scout Association sobe responsible when you have fun.

issues from what they thought oftheir camping experience to whatSocial Networking site they preferto use.
In the true sense of all the great TVshows the results have beencalculated analysed, verified and ithas given us a great insight into theways that our Devon Scoutscommunicate, what they think ofsome of the facilities we are able toprovide and perhaps what resourcesand activities we could consider forfuture camps.
The big thing that we did learn wasthe amount of resources, time andeffort that our Leaders put in tomaking sure that their group reallydo get the best that we can possiblyprovide and how well this isreceived by our Scouts.
For the full results and ourbreakdown see ACC Scouts.
During saturday evening each groupran their own base fromdemonstrations on fine dining Scoutstyle to Camp Ice Cream and ballcontrol there was a base to test allyour scouting skills.
The Media team decided to take thisopportunity to bribe our Scouts withchocolate and find out what ourScouts would express about various
