Attention 5th Grade Families! An exciting educational trip to Quebec & Montreal in June of 2021 is being planned by our World Studies teachers. An in-formational meeting will be held on Monday, September 30th at 6:30 pm in the Woodland LMC. Please click here for more details about this adventure.

If your student did not have their photo taken at a picture day in August, the

Woodland School picture re-take day will be held on Wednesday, September 25th. Please click here to print a copy of the Network Photography order form if needed. Copies are also available in the office.

On Friday, September 27th there will be an 11:20 am release for all intermediate

students. Pledge sheets were sent home with students this week for the Woodland Fun

Run which will be held on Friday, October 4th. Please look for volunteering op-portunities in future notes.

6th graders will be going on a field trip to Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya. Homerooms will at-

tend on the following dates:

The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation is once again looking to recognize out-

standing teachers and schools. Parents, teachers, students, community mem-bers, or administrators are able to nominate an outstanding teacher by submitting a nomination form on line at www.kohleducation.org. Nominations must be made online no later than Tuesday, October 8th. Teachers and principals nominated will then be sent an application form.

Physical Education

5th and 6th grade P.E.

The 5th and 6th grade students

talked about our community

values and what they looked like

in the PE Class. We talked about

them and gave examples, and we

also added Effort for the PE class.

The first couple of days of

class, the students played a big

game activity. The focus of this

was teamwork and space

awareness.

The next week the students

will be testing. The tests will be:

sit-n-reach, sit-ups, push-ups, and

the pacer. The students will

record the scores into their

Chromebook. We will test two

more times throughout the year.

Applications

Welcome to Computer

Applications! The first fifteen

minutes of each class is

spent practicing keyboarding

skills using an excellent

program called

EduTyping.com. Using an

online program allows

students who are looking for

more practice to access their

lessons from home as well. At

the start of each month,

students complete a timed

test to measure how their speed and accuracy have

improved, and they evaluate

their posture, use of the

keyboard covers and focus.

Computer Applications is a

letter-graded class, so you

can access these scores by

logging into Infinite Campus.

I like to remind parents to

encourage proper

keyboarding techniques at

home so the skills learned in

class carry over to everyday

life. This month, I challenge you to have your child to

teach you proper

keyboarding posture! I'm

excited to get to know you

and your child this year!

World Studies

6th Grade World Studies

Bonjour et bienvenue! As a sixth grader, your child will be studying French and Spanish this year! We are always looking for guest speakers to visit classes and share travel stories with us. If you or someone you know would be interested, please email me. We began our French unit by learning the benefits of speaking French. For example, did you know that French is the second most learned language in the world, and is spoken on all continents? It is a thriving language in today's global economy, with over 40 countries around the world who use it as their daily language! Students who learn a second language such as French have shown to be more creative and better at solving complex problems, develop a deeper understanding of their own and other cultures, and improve their overall school performance. Evidence also shows that children who learn a language before the onset of adolescence are more likely to develop native-like pronunciation. This month, I challenge you to ask your child which benefits he or she chose as his or her top three reasons to learn French!

Woodland Wolves Chorus The choir is once again planning to sing in the KASD Choral Festival on February 17 at Kimberly High School. This concert will feature all of the choral ensembles in grades 5 – 12, with a song in which everyone will sing together! Our first week of rehearsals is October 1, with girls meeting on Tuesdays and boys on Thursdays. Rehearsals will run right after school until 3:55. We can share Globe Trotter and other intramural students as they wrap up their adventures. If you missed the sign up and still wish to join, contact Mrs. Been ASAP. Healthy Living 5

th Grade

Healthy Living-5

I am slowly but surely learning all the 5th

graders names. I told the kids that between

Woodland and Mapleview, I have 368 names

swimming around in my head. They are all very

understanding!! I describe “Healthy Living”, as a

Wellness class addressing physical, mental and

social health, especially as they apply to

adolescents. Healthy Living is a non-graded class,

but we continue to have standards to address and

good habits to establish. Our topics this year

include: Wellness triangle; Family/Friends;

Emotions; Stress/Anger; Nutrition; Tobacco;

Personal Health and Safety, and Human Growth

and Development. Our first unit will be the

Wellness Triangle. Students will learn to broaden

their view of what it means to be healthy to

include not just physical health, but mental and

social health as well.

Following the Wellness Triangle, we will begin

our unit on “Social Health”. Family influences our

physical, mental and social health by the genes that

are passed down, as well as, by the environment in

which we are raised. Friends will become an even

greater influence on students’ health in the

upcoming years. For this reason, evaluating the

characteristics that we look for in friends is vital.

The final topic in our social health unit is bullying.

We know from the recent school climate survey

that most students enjoy school, feel safe and are

happy. Unfortunately, there continue to be

incidents of bullying. Recognizing bullying and

knowing what to do in the situation to stop it will,

hopefully, help all students to feel safe, included

and cared for. Identifying the roles people play in

our lives and how to improve and keep healthy

relationships is key to staying well.

6th Grade Art

The sixth grade students used their chrome book to search for an image they wanted to use for their painting. After they selected their own image the students learned how to free draw their image onto a sheet of paper, and then they transferred their image onto their canvas panel so they could begin painting their image. The 6th grade students then were ready to paint their image. The students needed to focus on a few things when painting: No water on their brush, No solid colors, thick paint, variety of colors and value. When the students finish their painting they will fill out the back of their canvas panel with a variety of details like: their name, title of their painting and signature. Before they turn in their painting they will use their chrome book to fill out their Google form “check-off sheet” (self-assessment) for their painting and will fill out and attach a name tag to their painting. The paintings will be displayed in the display cases when they are finished.

The Elements of Art we have covered are: Color, Form, Line, Shape, Space, Value and Texture.

Band

Welcome to a new year of learning

in the Woodland Band Program! Our

beginning 5th graders had a great

start on their instruments in early

August attending two weeks of band

camp. Because of their hard work

they are already playing familiar

tunes along with having a good

foundation to being great musicians.

We are very excited to have them! Most of our continuing 6th graders

also attended one week of band camp

in August. They also worked hard

reviewing from what they learned last

year and also moved forward a bit in

their band method books. They are

back in shape and ready for another

great year of music making! All band

lessons began the week of September

9. We are definitely off to a great

beginning of the school year!

MUSIC

Music Room News We’re off to a great start! Fifth grade music classes are reviewing known concepts and are beginning to learn new rhythms though some silly new songs. The students of fifth grade are very good singers and have remembered many

music reading concepts from fourth grade! We are adding vocabulary words and sharpening our listening skills by doing some focused listening for different instruments and sections in marches. The fifth grade concert will include all the students of grade 5 singing and will also include the students who are in the band. This concert will be held on

January 14th. Sixth grade students are reviewing rhythms and note names of the treble and bass staves through singing and worksheets. It’s fun to jump in where we left off in fifth grade. Their singing continues to be impressive! We will very soon learn how to play the drums and

other instruments in world drumming. We will include our drums and voices on our performance on December 10th at 6:30pm. Please make sure your calendars are marked with the date, the concert will include every student in Grade 6. Students are all expected to attend their grade

level concerts, and wear dress pants or khakis, dresses or skirts with dress shoes and a nice top without logos or writing.

CAMP MEDICATION INFORMATION 2019

Mrs. Bergmann, Mrs. Lau and Mrs. Wesoloski attend camp on Mon. Oct. 7th. Mrs. Heinz, Mr. Mc Gregor and Ms. Price attend camp on Monday Oct. 14th

All Paperwork, including health medication paperwork is due on Sept. 24th.

If you have medication consents on file for this school year, there is nothing else you need to do. We will send the medications that you have already provided including emergency medications such as inhalers, epipens and glucagon. Inhalers: If your student has permission from their health care provider to carry

their own inhaler, make sure they have it on their person, not packed in a bag. They will NOT be allowed on the bus without it.

Prescription medications (not given at school): Parent/guardian and physician signatures are needed on the KASD Request for Giving Medication form provided in the camp packet. School will provide Stock medication such as Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen and

Benadryl. If you want any of these made available to your student, you may fill out that information on the Outside Of School Field Trip Permission Form.

All medications must be in their original container and contain only enough medication for that day.

BULLYING AWARENESS WEEK

Every school year at Woodland, students and staff spend some time talking about bully prevention. We align our efforts with Wisconsin's Day of Observance for Bullying Awareness that is set aside for the 4th Wednesday of September. This is an important step in laying the foundation for a positive school climate that we strive to create for and with our students each year. On the wall by our recess doors, you will find the following statement. “We, the Woodland Wolves, pledge to never bully anyone. Instead, we will choose to Dare to C.A.R.E.” Students and staff sign their names to the banner above our pledge as a reminder of what we said we will do.

Academic and Career Planning: Family Update

ACP Overview We wanted to take the time early in the school year to remind families of our Academic and Career Planning (ACP) process at the intermediate level, as well as, connect you to information containing an overview of ACP from kindergarten through senior year. ACP is a student-driven, adult-supported process in which students create and cultivate their own unique and information-based visions for post-secondary success, obtained through self-exploration, career exploration, and the development of career management and planning skills. ACP at the Intermediate Level During intermediate school, our focus is on exploration. Students begin to explore career clusters in a more personalized way through the use of Career Cruising. They examine their interests, strengths, soft skills, and personality traits to increase their self-awareness while also learning about career clusters of interest. We encourage parents to have conversations with their children about their interests and to look for opportunities where their child could try things they like. Parents also have access to their child’s Career Cruising account through one of

two ways. Students can show you their account or they can email you a link to view their account. ACP Throughout the Year Our ACP opportunities take place throughout the entire school year in a number of settings. Below you will find a tentative road map for when and where students will more formally engage in academic and career exploration. We will communicate via newsletters and emails more about each of the below opportunities so that you know what we are working on and can have conversations with your child.
