IMPLEMENTATION OF BUZZ-IN ENTRY SYSTEM

The Kimberly Area School District is dedicated to providing a safe environment for our students and staff. During this school year, schools will be implementing a new secure access system, commonly known as a “buzz-in entry”.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

● All visitors (including family members, volunteers, and vendors arerequired to follow the buzz-in procedure during the school day.)

● When you arrive, press the button on the intercom. Guests may beasked to present a government issued ID to the security camera.

● A staff member may ask you some clarifying questions beforegranting access to the building.

● Once inside, continue to sign in at the office and wear a visitor badgewhile in the school.

● Anyone unfamiliar with the buzz-in procedure can refer to instructionsposted at the main entrance of the school.

● We realize this system will require a change in practice from staff, families, and visitors.

● Thank you for your support as we work to create the safest learningenvironment possible.

Physical Education

5th and 6th grade P.E.

The students have finished

up the Hockey unit. Our

overall focus on this unit

was Safety. The skills that

we worked on in class

where: Passing, Dribbling,

and Shooting on Goal.

The unit we have started

this past week is Badminton.

We have learned how to

serve (underhand) and now

are into games. The class is

doing a ladder tournament.

They are working with a

partner during the games.

6th Grade Computer

Applications

Sixth graders began a new unit to the Computer Application curriculum this year called Intro to Coding. They are very excited to expand their coding skills following the district-wide Hour of Code session we completed in the fall. We know that all students

have various levels of experience with coding, so the unit begins with a series of review lessons and then will explore new skills. Concepts learned include sequencing, debugging, loops, nested loops, conditionals and functions. As always, we love having guest speakers! If you work in a field that uses coding and are interested in sharing your career with students, please contact me.

World Studies

5th Grade World Studies

I can’t believe we are already wrapping up our third quarter of the school year! Students in World Studies are finishing up the Japanese unit, with focus on the values of the Japanese culture, such as nature, environment, respect, responsibility, etc. At the conclusion of the unit, students will be completing an Ancestry Investigation where they are to interview someone to learn more about their family’s history. The purpose of this assignment is to remind students that unless Native American, our ancestors were/are all immigrants to this country, and may have gone through similar experiences.

Spring Concert/Art Show Information: The Arts: Visual and Musical Arts are very important to the success of our Woodland Intermediate School students. The Arts enhance the student’s personal, emotional, social and intellectual development to become a quality member in today’s world. Please come and immerse yourselves in the art and music of the Woodland Intermediate students. You will be able to view the wonderful art before and after the concert. Students are encouraged to enter a program cover design for a chance to have their artwork featured for the event. Please see a previous email that came home via an email for details. Artwork from the 5th and 6th grade students will be displayed in the cafeteria before and after the evening concert. The 5th and 6th grade bands and intramural choir will be performing their Spring Concert on Tuesday, April 11th, 2019 at 6:30 pm in the Woodland gymnasium. Choir (non-band) students will meet in the 6th grade pod at 6:20.

Students are asked to wear nice clothes for the evening performance. No wind pants or jeans, and no t-shirts with writing. Choir and Band or Woodland t-shirts would be appropriate for the afternoon performance for the school.

We look forward to sharing the arts with you.

It’s easy for students to register: https://www.lawrence.edu/s/academy/programs/spring-sing

The end of the quarter also brings the

end of our goal setting unit. Ideally, we all

set goals that will motivate us. I, however,

did require students to write a physical or

mental goal so they will understand and

apply the process of goal setting. This

process included having a beginning and

ending measure so that they can celebrate

their progress, action steps to help achieve

the goal, a specific ending date set to

evaluate progress and, if needed, identify

what obstacles interfered with reaching that

desired goal.

If you have noticed a newfound

peacefulness at home, you are welcome. It

is because we have been practicing conflict

resolution. Unfortunately, I suspect the

generalization of these skills to home (or

even here at school for that matter) is yet to

be seen. I will continue to talk the talk of

conflict resolution to reinforce what we have

been doing. We will be creating and

performing conflict skits as our culminating

activity to this unit. In order to be socially

and mentally healthy, we need to be able to

resolve conflicts and be respectful. Please

help reinforce these ideas and ideals at home

starting with deciding “how big is this

problem?”

As always, if you have any questions,

concerns, please contact me.

5th Grade Art

The 5th grade students are creating a ceramic project with a theme of their choice: (animal, person, hobby…). The students began by either drawing out a sketch of their idea or searching for an image on their Chromebook. Once the 5th grade students showed Mr. Calmes their idea they grabbed the amount of clay they needed. The students then shaped their ball of clay into a 3D shape of their choice: (sphere, cube…). The students then traced an area on the top of their 3D shape with a needle tool and their pinky. The students then hallowed out their 3D clay piece with a wire tool. After the students have hallowed out their clay piece they will smooth the inside and outside with their finger and a sponge. The students then added extra clay and carved into their clay project. Their clay piece was then set out to dry and was fired. After their clay piece has been fired the first time they will then glaze their clay piece. Their clay piece is fired a second time after they have finished glazing. When the students are all finished with their clay project they will fill out a name tag. After they are finished with their name tag they will use their chrome book to fill out their check off sheet (self- assessment) on our Google classroom. The clay projects will be displayed in the display cases when they are finished.

The Elements of art we have covered are: Color, Line, Form, Shape and Texture.

MUSIC

Music Room News As quarter three comes to an end, we will be wrapping up the keyboarding unit. The students have come a long way and have become much more independent piano players. The sixth grade students have really taken off in their skills. They should be very proud of their successes. Fifth grade students have made great improvements since the first few weeks also! During the 4th quarter students of the 6th grade will learn about the elements of music, learn what to listen for in classical music, and gain an overview of music history. It is an opportunity to understand music that students don’t hear every day and draw comparisons to popular music. 5th grade students will return to singing and reading music of America’s folk traditions as well as other cultures.

The Woodland Chorus members are learning new songs for the Spring Concert. It is important that students are at rehearsal. Students may not miss more than 2 rehearsals because they will not learn the music in time for the concert. Please help your student follow this expectation. Those who are in a second intramural need to be present at choir for a minimum of 25 minutes. On April 2nd, 4th, and 9th all choir students will rehearse together from 2:50-3:55. This is so the boys and the girls can rehearse together. If you have any concern with this please call Mrs. Been at (920)730-0924 or [email protected]. Our performance is on April 11th at 6:30. We will rehearse during recess/lunch that day instead of after school. We will have an ice cream party after spring break during lunch and recess to celebrate the year. The final performance will be a trip to Sunrise to sing for the students there. More information, including the date and time will come later.

ACP update - Fifth graders were introduced to what ACP is all about during their career unit in guidance. Some knew what it was because of an

older brother or sister, which was awesome to hear! Students learn that planning for their future is an ever-changing topic because our strengths and interests change as we get older. We stress the importance of keeping an open mind when it comes to learning about careers and the 16 career clusters. In this Career Unit of guidance, students learn how to explore the Career Cruising website. They also search for information about some of the career clusters and take an interest inventory called Matchmaker, which matches their interests to possible careers and career clusters. In the coming weeks, parents and guardians of 5th grade students will be receiving a letter with information on how to access their student’s Career Cruising account. While actual career decisions are years away, exploring is well underway. Be a part of your child’s career exploration and have conversations with them today!

47 students from across Wisconsin competed on Saturday, March 14, 2019 in the

Badger State Spelling Bee, which kicked off at 1 p.m. at Madison Area Technical

College’s Mitby Theater. Among these students were, for the first time ever, two from

the Kimberly Area School District, Tyler Van Gompel, a student at Woodland

Intermediate School, and Colton Pozniak, a student at Mapleview Intermediate School.

It was an incredible experience! The pressure was tremendous but they managed it like

pros and gave outstanding performances!

5 Reasons to Try TENNIS This Summer

It’s individual. Our players love that tennis is a perfect

match of their own strengths and

weaknesses against an opponent’s. Win or

lose, the beauty of tennis is that players

know they are solely responsible for the

outcome.

It’s a brain game. More than other sports, tennis is a match of

intellect. It requires real-time problem

solving, analysis, strategizing, & execution.

It teaches emotional control. To be successful, tennis requires players to

be in control of their emotions. They must

learn to cope with setbacks, recover quickly

from failures, and calm their emotions.

They will play it for the  rest of their lives. Tennis is a sport that players can grow in the

rest of their lives. While their friends

remember their sports as part of childhood,

tennis players take the competition, health,

and social benefits well into adulthood

where they can continue to play at a

competitive level.

It’s safe. Tennis is a non-contact way for players to

sharpen their agility, endurance, hand-eye

coordination and athleticism.

District has two clothes closets that are located in two of our

schools. One of the clothes closets is at Mapleview

Intermediate (920-788-7910) and the other is at Westside

Elementary (920-739-3578). If you would like to donate or are

in need of some assistance with resources, you can contact

Mapleview or Westside. In addition to the clothes, Woodland is

frequently being offered ways to support our families if they

should fall upon economic hardship. Please reach out to your

When to Keep Your Child Home

Children should be kept home from school when they don’t feel well. It is important to get the rest they need to

recover, and to prevent the spread of germs to other children and the staff. If you are unsure of when to keep your

child home, please contact the school nurse or your family medical provider.

The following symptoms may suggest a communicable disease. Children who have the following symptoms should

be kept home from school until a doctor has seen them, they no longer have symptoms indicating a communicable

disease or they have received treatment for at least 24 hours for certain diseases.

SORE THROAT

An oral temperature of 100.4 or higher indicates a fever. If your child has a temp of 100.4 or higher at school he/she will be sent home. Your child must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.

If a fever is accompanied by a sore throat, stomach ache or head ache it may be strep throat. Strep throat is diagnosed by a throat culture obtained at a medical clinic. If your child is diagnosed with strep throat, your child must be on appropriate antibiotics for 24 hours and fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product) before he/she returns to school.

If your child has an episode of vomiting and diarrhea at school, he/she will be sent home. Anyone with these symptoms should stay home until symptoms are absent for 24 hours.

A cough may be a sign of many different illnesses. If a cough is accompanied by a fever, sore throat, body aches or any other symptoms you should keep your child home. Any cough that lasts for more than several days should be discussed with a doctor.

Rashes and infected sores needed to be diagnosed by a medical provider. Many skin rashes such as impetigo, scabies, chicken pox, Fifth disease or Hand Foot and Mouth disease are very contagious. Students may return to school once the rash has been diagnosed and treated for 24 hours or cleared by a doctor. Open sores from illnesses such as chicken pox and impetigo may need to be covered at school with bandages for several days.

Symptoms that prevent the student from active participation is usual school activities OR student is requiring more care than school that can safely provide.
