Charlie Hewitt Woodcuts
Charlie Hewitt Woodcuts
Charlie Hewitt’s work is about “recording the time we are in” and is a response to and commentary on the time and places he has lived and worked, whether in the mill-towns and shipyards of Maine and Maryland or on the Bowery in New York City. Literature and theater have also been important sources of inspiration for Hewitt, who believes in reading as much as drawing. Profound interests in art his-tory, literature, theater and mythology are apparent in much of Hewitt’s work. He is an extremely talented, energetic and physical printmaker. He cannot sit still and is compelled to work, to draw and carve. For Hewitt, the process of beginning and developing an image and the collaborative nature of printmaking, are what make the medium so appealing.
