Calvet, one of the oldest French wine brands in the world, was founded in 1818 by Jean-Marie Calvet. From hismother, whose family owned vineyards in Tain-l’Hermitagein the Rhone Valley, Jean-Marie inherited a passion forwine and founded Calvet to commercialize the family’swines. As Bordeaux was one of their biggest markets —Bordeaux négociants had the particular practice ofblending Hermitage wines with Bordeaux wines to givethe latter more color and body — Jean-Marie and his sonOctave built warehouses in Bordeaux, opened an office in1849, and expanded to Burgundy in 1870, to become thelargest wine company in France in the 19th century andmost of the 20th century.
While Calvet was sold in New York as early as 1882, itsfocus was primarily Europe, Argentina, and Asia, so itspresence in the United States had all but disappeared bythe late 1990s. Sixth generation négociant and directdescendant Jean-Christophe Calvet, and his eldest sonJean-Sebastien Calvet, are successfully re-introducingCalvet back into the U.S. market.Chateau Grand

Place Matters
Bordeaux is one of the largest wine regions in the world, with 300,000 acres. It represents 15 percent of winesproduced in France and 1.5 percent of wines producedworldwide. Red wine dominates the Bordeaux winecategory, making up 85% of total production. It’s able toachieve that feat because some of the grapes have beenplanted in places in which one of the most formidableenemy is the prolonged cool to cold temperatures of aContinental climate.
In some regions of Bordeaux, the cooler climate workswell with white grapes — especially Sauvignon Blanc —because it keeps the grapes high in acidity and creates arefreshingly crisp and clean style. The Gironde river andits tributaries are effective at tempering the cold in thewinter and the heat in the summer. The most famous wineregions are along rivers or other bodies of water for thisreason. The most notable fact about Bordeaux for many isthe birth of the prodigal grape, Cabernet Sauvignon, across of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc.
