Steeped in tradition, Woodbury Junior-Senior High School has a long history of academic, athletic, and creative excellence. For over one hundred years, students from the community have entered this building as wide-eyed children and have left, a short while later, as competent, responsible adults. Over the years, our small school has consistently produced big results. We were selected as the first national Junior-Senior AVID Demonstration school in the country in 2011. College Board bestowed the Gaston Caperton Inspiration Award on Woodbury in 2012. We were named in U.S. News Best High Schools in 2013 and also found ourselves on the Washington Post’s list of most Academically Challenging High Schools in 2015. Our athletic teams have won numerous conference, regional, and state championships. An entire wall in our building is adorned with the pictures and accomplishments of student-athletes who have gone on to semi-professional and professional sports. Strong connections between the home and school are a large part of the foundation for this success. Dedicated staff who are committed to academically challenging each student, while concurrently developing their character and moral compass, complete that structural framework. Whether in the classroom, on the playing field, or out in the community, the students of Woodbury excel in their endeavors and meet life’s challenges with courage, confidence, and pride. We take great pride in our school, what it has to offer, and its accomplishments. All students in grades 9-11 take the Preliminary Scholastic Achievement Test (PSAT/National Merit) in October. SAT testing is administered three times per year at the school. Twenty-Nine percent of the “Class of 2016” passed one or more AP test.

Grading

A numerical system is used for grading with 65 as the minimum passing grade. Grades are reported quarterly. Final examinations are required in all academic subjects. A = 100 – 90 B = 89 – 80 C = 79 – 70 D = 69 – 65 F = below 65

Ranking

Rank is cumulative and based on the final grade earned in each class. All Honors and Advanced Placement are weighted at factor of 1.1 which is computed and reflected in the weighted GPA reported on the official transcript. All students who project enrollment of two complete years at WHS are included in the rank (grades from previous high schools are included in the calculation for all transfer students). Option II courses are not factored in the GPA in accordance with local Board of Education Policy.
