Fall, autumn. That time of the

year when everything starts to

to clean up the mess they leave.

To some that is no big deal,

unless you live on a street like

It’s this time of year that I start

to have dreams of an endless

supply of oak. You see on my

Since she was a bit smaller than most of the babies born in my

family, I figured I gained a couple of extra weeks to build the

cradle. There are a few Christmas presents I hope to make if I

have time. And I’m sure there will be some other little things to

make before the weather gets to cold.

Anyway my advice to all of you is to enjoy the fall. Don’t spend

all your time raking leaves. Get in the shop and enjoy the fall

and all that it brings.

So till next month,

I hope you’re making sawdust.

Hand Tool — Special Interest Group

The September meeting of the KCWG Hand Tool SIG centered

around the use of scrapers and their sharpening. We saw a dem-

onstration of a Veritas large scraper plane by Jerry Watson as

well as burnishing tools

from Veritas, Eagle Jigs,

Crown and a home-made

burnisher from Louis

Armstrong. Jerry and

Rob Young demonstrated

sharpening methods for

the card scraper including

the gooseneck

scraper. Several members

practiced their newly found skill at turning a scraper burr with

great success. Material samples such as a walnut inlay in cherry

where the grain of the inlay and the grain of the cherry are at

right angles provided dramatic evidence of the efficiency of a

card scraper over sanding. Remember, if you sand Padauk

inlayed with maple you end up with a less than lovely piece of

Padaple but scrape the inlay down and the colors don't bleed

together! Other sample materials included some curly cherry,

mahogany veneer plywood and cherry with badly done shellac

and polyurethene finishes. The edge of a freshly cut piece of

glass has a very fine burr and can be used as a scraper to re-

move runs and drips from a dried finish. The venerable #80

Stanley Cabi-

net Scraper

was demon-

strated on the

curly cherry

to great ef-

fect. Prop-

erly sharp-

ened, a #80

can save a lot

of work

cleaning up

surfaces prior

to finish-

ing. The #80 is still available new and used cabinet scrapers

are quite common. A good quality replacement blade from

Hock will turn a $3 rummage sale prize into an effective sur-

facing tool.

CNC SIG Meeting Minutes October 5th 2010 Tonight was run-what-you-brung. Jim Drummond brought a piece of pine from lumber recovered from a 150 year old barn. Once we got the correct router bits he made a plaque with the barn donors name to present as thanks. Some good looking wood. Brad Swaters brought me the bearing idler that he ma-chined for my MechMate so I have one more new part. Once the Guild Auction is over I need to get back to grind-ing the rails and get some progress. Brad has also started on the safe and proper operation guidelines for use of the CNC Router. A Special Message from our Vice President

We need your help, as you know we’re having the fund raising auction with our woodworking friends the Turners November 6, 2010. We would like to raise over $10,000 dollars in this event. We will be using this money to pay our rent for next year. This money will help us to go forward and do a lot in get-ting our shop in shape. As you may know we just brought a new Grizzly 15" with Spiral Cutterhead Planer. We have done a lot since we moved in our current location. Raising this money is not impossible. With your help we as a Guild can pull together and make this happen. The Guild needs your help in the following areas

Making follow up phone calls for auc-

This auction will be open to the public and adver-tised in local newspapers. Currently Wood Craft is announcing the auction on their web site. I hope to have over 300 people attend this auction not count-ing our own members.

Shop Smith — Special Interest Group

Next meeting of the Shopsmith Special Interest Group was Sunday, October 3, 2:00 P.M. at the Shop. This meeting featured tune-up, maintenance, lu-brication, and safety. We will also get a look at over $7,000 worth of additional Shopsmith equip-ment donated by member, Pete & Ginny Cuppage to the Shopsmith SIG. Machinery includes a Mark V Model 510 with a Jointer, Scrollsaw & Belt Sander. On separate power stands are a bandsaw and a 12 in Thickness Planer. This is a generous donation for which the Shopsmith SIG most ap-preciates. At future meetings the SIG will, for a portion of the meeting, have a member present a chapter in the 10 Chapter Shopsmith Self Study Course in Woodworking in the Home Workshop. September General Meeting Program

The program portion of the meeting was given by Ron

Lomax on the rocking chair he built. A Maloof style

chair was featured on the cover of Fine Woodworking.

Ron’s wife saw the magazine and insisted that Ron

build her one. Even though Ron claimed that it was

“above his ability”, he acquiesced. After much search-

ing, Ron found a reasonably priced set of plans and

patterns from Highland Woodworking, which he used

to profile the walnut chair parts. The sculpting of the

chair, however, is left up to the builder. Ron used a

variety of power tools and hand tools to finalize the

sculpting of the chair. The joinery was quite difficult,

since there are no straight surfaces on the chair, and

the front legs are splayed at a 6 degree angle.

After assembly and final sculpting, Ron sanded to

400 grit, starting at 100 grit then progressing through

120, 150,

180, 220 and

320. He then

used abrasive

pads before

finishing with

a mixture of

tung oil, lin-

seed oil, and

melted bees-

wax.

Ron brought

the chair to

the meeting,

and the fin-

ished result

testified that

this project,

while difficult,

was not

“above his

ability”!

The quote of the night was :

“..But you have all that equipment down-

stairs—you ought to be able to make that

chair!”
