No plastics or metals. Timber should be rounded as much as possible before used on the lathe. Do not use wood with cracks, splits and large knots. BS4163 Main points: 10.7.1. Loose clothing and long hair can become entangled in lathe. 10.7.1. Wood turning tools can become trapped between the rest and work piece. 10.7.1. Wood dust can be inhaled. 10.7.1 Timber splinters can fly off poorly prepared or poorly selected wood. CLEAPSS Main Points: 1.080. Tools can become trapped between tool rest and spinning work piece. 1.080. Work pieces can be ejected if not secured. Tools can also be ejected. 1.080. Human contact can cause cuts or abreactions with moving parts. 1.080. Long hair, jewellery and loose clothing can become entangled dragging the user into them. 1.080. Dust can prevent a hazard. Common Problems: If the tool is not held at the right angle it can be knocked back into the user. If wood is not secured properly it could fall out. Only sharp tools should be used. PPE: Face shield Ear defenders (for long periods) Apron/ overalls Protective footwear No jewellery Long hair tied back Common Misconceptions: If the tool rest is not at the right height it could become dangerous. I have used this machine to: Turn a piece of pine to make beads, using varied tools.
