“I would love to give you a complete tour right now, but, as you can see I am really busy right now. I must continue to restock my pumps, then move the trailer in left bay so my buddy can fill up his truck. So … please excuse me … I’ve got to run … But …Udie will be glad to walk you thru the build of my truck stop.”

Introduction

This article is a continuation of building the many projects detailed in the Peterbilt Truck Stop plan set. Visit our Wood Toy News section of our website to read: Part 1: Building the Truck Part 2: Building the Trailers I will be focused on the build of the Truck Stop itself. I will be demonstrating a couple build/assembly modifications, and discuss what I used for signage.

Once again, I have made some changes to the original plan set, or let us just call them embellishments. The plan sets from Toymakingplans.com allows your creative juices to flow and do all kinds of things with and to them will little effort.

Build Modifications and Enhancements

I felt that the gas pumps needed a little something extra. So, I found some gas pump clip-art on the internet and modified them a little creating specific pumps for the various types of fuel commonly available to us. Using a label making program I printed them on 2” x 4” shipping labels. Pump labels were made for Diesel fuel, Regular gas and High-Test using peel-n-stick labels.

Next step was to paint the pumps silver, then paint and add the nozzle/hose detail. Attach the labels and seal the assemblies with craft varnish and let them dry on the drying rack.

Then attach the completed pump assemblies to the gas pump bases.

So, now let us move on to the Truck Stop Signage.

Rather than cut a new piece of MDF to the size as per the plan set (sorry John and Cynthia), I dug into my scrap bin and found a piece of MDF which was close to the height specified by the plan set and cut it a different length. Might as well use what I already have available to me - right!

I was very anxious to complete this project and was not in the mood to scroll saw the letters today and looked for an alternative method. I remembered that I had a box of peel-n-stick child safe foam letters from another project and decided to use these. Works for me. For a straight edge and spacer from the bottom edge I used a long coffee stir stick to assist me in adhering the letters.

I was having difficulty coming up with a brand symbol for my chain of Truck Stops. I wanted to personalize the Truck Stop. I wanted my chain of Trucks Stops to be known as “Mini-Udie’s Truck Stop”. Took a few photos of a Lego character (customized to look like me). Printed them on some Avery labels. As you can see, I have enough labels now to make a chain of Truck Stops.

For the Truck Stop identifier sign with Mini-Udie on it, I used a piece of the handrail that was used to make the Tanker Trailer – looks good to me. Above and below is a close-up view of the signage on top of the building. What I am really demonstrating here is how easy it is to customize any signage to the end user. Just as I did when I made the Toddlers Townhouse project for my nephew.

When it came time to build the Truck Stop, I did not have a sufficient amount of dowel diameter as recommended by the plan set in stock.

I did have a few bags of a smaller diameter (3/8”) and 1/2" shorter in length. The shorter length did not cause any problems with the clearance necessary for the trucks and trailer to pass under the roof of the Truck Stop. So once again, why not use what you already have. Once glued in place the structure was quite solid. I think the larger diameter of 1/2" as per the plan set would be the way to build this, but as I said at the beginning of this article, I was anxious to complete this plan set.

Completed Truck Stop Photos Here are a few photos of the completed Truck Stop. The signage was not glued in place, allowing me to change it at any time and personalize it if needed.

Hope you enjoyed viewing my version of the Peterbilt Truck Stop. As much as I did making it.

Happy Toy Making – The Peterbilt Truck Stop
