For over 150 years Australia’s leading educators have been teaching, inspiring and nurturing the leaders of tomorrow at SPW’s historical campus.

Established in 1863 as the day school of the Parish of St Peter’s Glenelg, the school catered to children in the Glenelg area for more than a century before it became St Peter’s Glenelg Anglican Grammar School.

Following the closure of neighbouring Woodlands Church of England Girls Grammar School in 1998, St Peter’s Glenelg acquired the historic Partridge Street site and moved the growing school community to its much larger 3.36-acre campus.

In 1999, SPW opened its doors for the first time, blending a rich shared history with today’s teaching philosophies and technology.

Offering a beautiful beachside setting, with fresh sea air and extensive play spaces and grounds, the SPW site includes three large grass playing fields along with multi-purpose outdoor and indoor court facilities.

The campus also features modern spaces for the finest educational outcomes, including: a Multi Media suite with a green screen, Dance Studio, Design and Technology laboratory, Food Technology area, Music Suite, Art Rooms and a Futures Centre incorporating Library and Digital Technology.

It is our rare privilege to be able to educate children in such a beautiful and functional environment, ensuring that both our glorious heritage buildings are maintained, and that modern facilities are made available to our students well into the future.

Research shows that the relationships and environments in which children participate during their early years have a significant effect on their development into the future.

As one of South Australia’s newest and leading early childhood education centres, the SPW Early Learning Centre will ensure your child is afforded every opportunity to grow into a resilient and happy child by creating a proactive and engaging early learning environment which caters for their well-being and stimulates their natural inquiry. With a qualified teacher in each room your child will receive a quality educational experience from the age of two years old.

As an International Baccalaureate Organisation World School the Primary Years Programme is introduced to the Early Learners. The PYP encourages young minds to build on their natural curiosity and to become inquirers at an early age.

With a relevant and personalised curriculum, small group sizes and a flexible environment for families, SPW provides peace of mind for parents, and purposeful learning experiences for children, building upon individual strengths, needs and emerging interests.

SPW’s professional teaching staff will provide educational continuity for transitioning between programs and into primary schooling. Playful, fun and inquiry-based learning, lays the perfect foundation for your child’s future.

The minimum sessions per week are set according to what is most beneficial for your child’s developmental stage, with families given the option of enrolling up to five days per week.

2 Year Old Program The minimum attendance is one day per week, which may initially be made up of two half-days (mornings). This program focusses upon providing younger children with a specialised transition into Early Learning at SPW by offering a manageable timeframe.

3 Year Old Program The minimum attendance is two days per week. The program enables children of this developmental stage with an opportunity to engage in social interaction and enquiry in some depth.

4 Year Old Program The minimum attendance is three days per week. At this stage of Early Learning the program offers a level of rigor and inquiry appropriate to the children’s developmental stage. The program promotes an increase in time which supports a smooth transition to school.

As an International Baccalaureate Organisation World School, SPW offers the Primary Years Program from Early Learning to Year 5.

The PYP is an international, transdisciplinary program designed to foster the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.

Students are encouraged to be internationally minded by being: inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and ref lective.

There is a strong focus on literacy and numeracy skills from Foundation to Year 7. Digital technology is embedded in all our teaching and learning programs with iPads accessible in each learning space from Foundation to Year 4. Children in Years 5 to 7 are required to have their own device. A large well-resourced library supports the curriculum.

From the children’s first week at school in Foundation they will experience specialist lessons in Art, Music, Physical Education and Language (German and Japanese).

Launched in 2015 the SPW Year 6 and 7 Centre provides an outstanding schooling experience for young adolescents at a critical developmental stage in their primary education.

SPW’s unique Year 6 and 7 Centre acknowledges the educational needs of our upper primary students by offering a flexible approach to learning, whilst remaining supportive of individual needs. Focusing on the Australian Curriculum and continuing to embrace inquiry based learning the educational program sets children up for success in Secondary School and beyond.

In the world of the young adolescent, issues such as identity and fitting in, making friends, relationships, having a voice, purpose, empowerment and making a difference are extremely important.

Within the Year 6 and 7 Centre learning environment, students will be given the opportunity to connect with these issues, with a responsive schooling experience that understands the spiritual, physical, emotional and social needs of young people, and channels adolescent enthusiasm and energy into real-life learning.

The Year 6 and 7 Centre acknowledges that students are ready to assume more responsibility for their learning, and provides opportunities for decision-making, self-management, active participation in learning and leadership.

Nurturing well rounded, resilient young adolescents, the SPW Year 6 and 7 centre will complete the primary experience for your child ensuring they are truly future ready.

By offering students a wide-range of activities that allow them to play, discover and learn outside of the classroom, SPW provides further opportunities for them to develop intellectually, physically, spiritually, social and emotionally.

To build self-esteem it is important for young people to excel at something, and feel proud of their individual achievement.

While SPW’s focus is always on strong literacy and numeracy skills, SPW also offers a diverse and in depth extra-curricular program.

Sport teaches team skills, cooperation and discipline, so from Foundation upwards your children can engage in a wide range of activities, including: Dance, Gymnastics, Net-Set-Go, Auskick, In2Cricket and Mini Soccer, during specified sports lessons and after school sports practices.

Team sport plays a large part of the SPW school community. Children can participate in year level sporting teams, district and state SAPSASA and

knockout competitions. SPW also hosts Soccer and Netball Schools of Excellence which provide the opportunity for children to learn skills from some of Australia’s most experienced coaches.

For the creatively inclined, SPW’s has a strong extra-curricular Arts program, which extends from one-on-one instrumental and voice instruction to school choirs, school musicals, school band and ensemble participation.

To build confidence and citizenship skills SPW also offers Tournament of Minds, Debating and Public Speaking.

In keeping with the School’s mission to encourage service and a respectful, caring community, SPW’s Buddy Class Program brings older students together with younger students to share knowledge and build the SPW community through fun, interactive and inclusive activities.

Buddy sessions involve playing games, sharing stories, practising sports skills and crafts, and going on excursions. In addition to planned activities, buddies often share lunch together and look out for each other in the playground, to help build an even stronger sense of community.

The SPW community openly encourages all parents and caregivers to develop a strong and active interest in the School’s programs and activities.

Collaboration between teachers, parents and caregivers is essential when educating a child. SPW understands that you are the most important influence in your child’s life and aims to educate in partnership with you, your child and their teachers.

SPW’s dedicated staff with the support of its parent community enables SPW to offer a wide range of extra and co-curricular activities in which parents can be actively involved.

Parents and family members are encouraged to connect with the SPW community by assisting, when possible, in: canteen, library, class reading programs, art and craft activities, drama, excursions, child support and sports programs.

The Parents and Friends Association is an active body that organises fundraising and social activities to promote long lasting friendships and a strong sense of community among parents and caregivers.

SPW’s students are also encouraged to become active, socially responsible members of the wider community, through participation in community activities. Service to others is a core component of student life, through the Student Representative Council (SRC). Children have the opportunity to decide on their chosen charity and how best to support those organisations and the people they care for.
