Robert Morris earned its first sweep of No. 4 Mercyhurst defeating the Lakers 3-1 Friday evening and 2-1 Saturday afternoon. The sweep of Mercyhurst also marked the first sweep of an opponent ranked in the national top-10 in RMU history. Sophomore forward Rebecca Vint led the RMU offensive effort with four points, one goal and three assists in the series while senior goaltender Kristen DiCiocco combined to register 59 saves. In game two of the series DiCiocco tallied season highs for saves in a single game with 40 and saves in one period with 20. Series vs. RIT This weekend’s series marks the inaugural meeting of the Colonials and Tigers. The defending NCAA Division III National Champions RIT moved up to Division I for the 2012-13 season. The Tigers 28 victories last season set a single-season record for Division III. Scouting RIT RIT has picked up big wins this season over Brown and skated closely with nationally ranked North Dakota and the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Tigers have beaten CHA opponents Lindenwood and Penn State. Senior captain Ariane Yokoyama leads the Tigers offensively with 11 points, four goals and seven assists while junior forward Kourtney Kunichika has also tallied 11 points in the first half of the season. Captain Kim Schlattman has scored eight goals for RIT and has dished out two assists. Schlattman has also taken home CHA Player of the Week acolades on one occasion this season. Sophomore forward Celeste Brown has tallied 10 points, six goals and four assists for RIT while also taking home CHA Player of the Week honors on one occasion. Sophomore goaltender Ali Binnington has seen 718 minutes of action between the pipes in the first half of the season. She owns a record of 5-4-2 with a goals against average of 2.26 and a .913 save percentage. TheawardmarksthesecondPlayeroftheMonthhonorforVintthisseasonassheearnsback-to-backmonthlyaccoladeswhileDiCioccoearnsherfirstGoal-tenderoftheMonthawardoftheyear. InthemonthofDecember,Vinttalliedonegoalanddishedoutfiveassistsinthreegames.Mostlynotably,VintregisteredfourpointsintheColonialsfirstprogramsweepofNo.4Merychurst.ThesweepovertheLakersalsomarkedRMU’sfirstsweepofanopponentrankedinthenationaltop-10. Coach of the Year Shortlyafterthe2011-12seasoncametoanendintremendousfashion,theRMUhockeyprogramreceivedmorefantasticnews.First-yearheadcoachPaulColontinowasselectedastheNationalCoachoftheYearbyU.S.CollegeHockeyOnline(USCHO).OntopofwinningNationalCoachoftheYear,Colon-tinowasalsonameCHACoachoftheYear. “It’sagreathonortoreceiverecognitionlikethis,”Colontinosaid.“It’sdefinitelysomethingthatIthinkthewholeprogramcansharein--theassistantcoaches,thestaffandtheplayers.Alotofgreatcoacheshadgreatseasonsacrossthenationthisyear,sothatobviouslymakesitveryspecialthatRobertMorriswaspickedforthisaward.”

Distinguished DiCiocco GoaltenderKristenDiCioccobecamejustthesecondColonialsintheyounghistoryoftheprogramtogarnerfirst-teamall-conferencerecognition.Afteranimpressiveregularseason,DiCioccoalsoclaimedtheRegular-SeasonGoaltendingTrophy.Thejuniorgoaliereceivedthestartingnodon28seperateoc-casionsinRMU30gameseason.SheledtheCHAinbothgoalsagainstaverage(1.96),ranking11thnationally,andsavepercentage(.926)attheconclusionoftheregularseason.SheloweredherGAAto1.92inleagueplayandonlyallowed14even-strengthgoalsin12conferencegamesplayed.Duringthemiddleportionoftheseason,DiCioccobecamethefirstColonialevertowinhonorsinfourconsecutiveweeksinwhichRMUhittheice.DiCioccoalsotiedtheRMUrecordformostsingle-seasonCHAweeklyhonorsbyagoalie(five),matchingthemarkthatassistantcoachBrianneMcLaughlinsetin2006-07.

Back-to-Back CHA Rookies of the Year AfterTheaImbrognobecamethefirststudent-athleteinprogramhistorytowinamajorpostseasonleagueawardasshewasnamedtheCHARookieoftheYearin2011,oneshortyearlateranotherRMUfreshmanwouldtakehomethehonor.InMarch2012,theCHAannouncedfreshmanforwardRebeccaVintastheRookieoftheYear. Welcome to the CHA Duringtheoffseason,CollegeHockeyAmericahasexpandedfromafourteamleaguetoasixteamleague.LongtimeCHAmemberNiagaraUniversitydroppeditswomen’shockeyprogramwhichopenedaslotforanewteam.LastseasontheCHAannoucedPennStatewouldjointheconferenceforitsinnaguralDivisionIyear.TheCHAdecidedtoexpandtoasixteamleaguewhenLindenwoodUniversityandRITshowedinterestinjoiningtheconference.TheexpansionoftheconferencewillallowtheCHATourna-mentstructuretochangeallowingtheTournamenttobeplayedoveraneightdayspan.

ColontinoledRobertMorriswomen’shockeytounprecedentedheights.HehelpedRMUbreakitsprogramrecordforwinsbytheendofJanuaryandfinishedtheseasonwith19victories,anamazing13-winimprovementfromthepriorseason.Despitebeingpickedtofinishlastintheleagueafterthelossoftheprogram’sall-timeleadingscorer,RMUpostedthehighest-everfinishinleagueplayunderColontino’sguidance,withthemostCHAwinsandpointsever,andalsoresetschoolrecordsforlongestwinningstreakandlongestunbeatenstreakduringthecourseoftheseason.

RMUenteredthe2012CHATournamentasthesecondseed,butwithtop-seededMercyhursthavingwonninestraighttournamenttitles,theLakerswereclearlystilltheteamtobeat.AfterdispatchingofNiagarainthesemifinals,RobertMorrisandMercyhurstmetwiththechampionshipontheline.TheColonialsopenedupatwo-goalleadwithinthefirst12minutesandneverletMercyhurstpullevenasRMUheldonfora3-2wintodethronethelongtimeCHAchampions.
