Pastor’s ReportSubmitted by Tracy Andrew Johnson

“And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”” (Matthew 8:26–27, ESV)

The StormsTo say that this has been a whirlwind year may seem a bit cliché. God has led us through many storms to show us His sovereignty and calling upon our lives personally and as a congregation. We went through the record snow storms last winter, an EF3 Tornado, the storm of discernment within our congregation, a hurricane, an unprecedented fall snowstorm that left many without electricity for a week, and currently the storm of a budget deficit.

Despite all of these storms, I have observed a congregation and elders that led this community with great faith rather than fear. We serve a God that not only leads us into the storms of this world, but a God that stands with us through the storms. Paul states, “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7, ESV). We responded to all of these storms not with a spirit of fear or of little faith, but as a people that have grown in our love of God and neighbor and know that we serve a Lord where even the winds and the sea obey him.

I am humbled that I am called to serve a people that eagerly seek God’s will through His written Word, and allow that Word coupled with the Holy Spirit to transform their mind and actions to live out the Gospel with each other and the greater Springfield community.

Over the past year this congregation, led by its elders, took several leaps of faith and love: Despite financial obstacles, we orchestrated bringing in a Christian illusionist, Danny

Ray, in a multi-church outreach event that packed the Old First Church with over 1200 people, who all heard the gospel clearly presented.

Without hesitation, we led the churches of Springfield in tornado relief and recovery. Through our efforts and space, CPC became the hub of activity for clean-up and led the organizing of a faith-based response to people in need.

At CPC, the purpose and command of God on our lives is simple, “Make disciples”. As a congregation, we are not just called to make disciples but to be disciple-makers. Our job is reach out with the good news to those that do not know and then help them follow Jesus’ commands to make other followers of Christ. Part of that process is outreach and evangelism—telling those who do not know Jesus who He is. Another part of the process is helping people grow in knowledge and in practice of their faith. This past year we have demonstrated that focus in our teaching and action.

In the pages of this annual report you will see a congregation that is committed to missions and discipleship. You will see a sampling of the activities of discipleship and outreach, but you will not see the depth of discipleship that goes way beyond this report. The relationships and connections that members have made to expand the Kingdom of God are the heartbeat of this congregation.

I do not know what storms God will bring our way this year, but I have the faith and confidence that together with God’s help we will face them with a Spirit of power and love. Thank you for allowing me to serve you as your pastor and for your continued ministry to my expanding family.

Director of Music Ministries’ ReportSubmitted by Nikali Benkert

The past year saw CPC’s worship team involved in the most ambitious outreach event in my time here. With numerous hours of planning and preparation, Christian illusionist Danny Ray came to Springfield to spread the gospel message in a unique and mesmerizing manner. Around 1200 people packed historical Old First Church on March 13to see Danny Ray captivate the crowd with his incredible illusions and the truth of the Gospel.

In 2011, we had several special nights of worship apart from Sunday morning services including Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Pentecost and Christmas Eve. Ash Wednesday provided a contemplative service as we reflected upon the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for our sins and the beginning of the Lenten season. The Good Friday service had a meditative tone as we explored the stations of the cross and Jesus’ death. For Pentecost, CPC and MLK joined together for a worship service with MLK’s choir combining with our worship team to praise our Lord Jesus Christ. For Pentecost this year, CPC will travel to MLK for a joint service at their church.

Many thanks go out to Elise and Gary Bernice, Nate and Cory Tripp, Andy and Danielle Benkert, Lisa Benkert, Sharon Nieves, Patrice Gresham, Pat Murray, Joshua Holley, Sam Einzig, Matt Pepin and Hunter Rametta for their time and dedication to the music at CPC. Lastly, thanks go to Andrew Johnson for his continued work in running the MediaShout presentations during worship.

In addition, the skit series “At The Cross” was performed by Rev. Tracy Johnson, Nikali Benkert, Andy Benkert, Bob Tongue and Patrice Gresham during the Lenten season.

On a personal note, I am excited to see the additions to the young families in our worship team during this past year. We celebrated the birth of Isaac Tripp and Adam Benkert and await the arrival of the Bernice twins later this year.

Over the past year we have been able to undertake a few major improvementsto the church. This is thanks in large part to the $15,000 investment thatSession approved in 2008 and Tornado Relief Efforts. In addition, many thanks go out to thecongregation for their help with these projects.

During 2011, we have completed the following items: Constructed shower and changing area within utility room. Replacement of several damaged ceiling tiles Landscaping (weeding, raking) Cleaning steel and painting front entryway Added lock on audio/visual room Fixed the drain and replaced the sinks in the Women’s Bathroom Caulked windows

Board of Deacons’ ReportSubmitted by Erin Quinney

The members of the Board of Deacons in 2011 were Pat LaRose, Ingrid Thresher, Eliz Tongue, Ellen Lapallainen, Justine Williams, VenGrumoli, Dora Boaten-Adusei, Lisa Hansen-Benkert, and Erin Quinney. The board met monthly throughout the year.

The role of the Board of Deacons is to serve the church. Each deacon has a group of individuals and families that they pray for, encourage and check-in on. Deacons are partnered up to assist each other in fulfilling the responsibilities of being the deacon-on-call. Members of the Board of Deacons have also played an integral role in many other ministries within the church this past year including: Sanctuary Décor, Greeter Ministry, Community Garden Ministry, Prayer Ministry and Care Ministry.

The Board of Deacons serves as steward of the Deacon’s Fund. Over the past year many of the physical needs of members of the congregation have been met through disbursements of the fund.

Discipleship & Mission Report

Below are the various ministries and missions sponsored by CPC and/or have various members of CPC involved in them. At CPC, we believe our primary task is to expand the Kingdom of God through discipleship. These various ministries and missions are different avenues and ways in which the members of CPC are engaging in making disciples.

Sunday SchoolThis year we engaged in some foundational and in-depth issues in Adult Sunday School. We did a thorough biblical overview of “Sex and the Bible” led by Pastor Tracy and class on, “Justice for the Poor” (a video curriculum led by Jim Wallis). In the Fall, we started a series on “Biblical Understanding the End Times” led by Pastor Tracy.

This Fall our numbers grew enough that we split the younger children into two classes. Preschool kids were faithfully led by Cheri Turnbull and the Elementary aged children were lovingly guided by Pat LaRose. Both of them used a new curriculum called “Buzz” from Group publishing which helps them with their prep time and engaging the students in interactive learning.

Men’s Ministry (submitted by Patrick Murray)This has been another blessed year for the Men's Bible Study.  We have a steady stream of between 6 to 10 guys who show up weekly.  We spent a significant portion of last year studying the Gospel of Mark.  It was an amazing opportunity to see the life of Jesus through the eyes of John-Mark, one of the early church disciples.  We also take time each week to check-in with and pray for one another.  My hope is that we will take some time this year to go on a quiet retreat and perhaps take on a work project somewhere in the city. This was our 7th year going to Man Camp at Camp Berea. Over 10 men spent the weekend together studying God’s Word. This year we learned about the 8 pillars of trust from David Horsager.

Women’s Ministry(submitted by Jessica Johnson)In the Spring, 10 -15 women from Christian Presbyterian Church and visitors gathered on Wednesdays to study Beth Moore's Daniel study which included weekly independent and group study. This time we gathered one week to watch the video and share fellowship and the next we reviewed the work we had done studying the passage.

Howard Street Prison Ministry(submitted by Calvin Walls)Regretfully, after a nineteen year run the Howard Street Prison Ministry ended in June of 2011. The inmates at the facility, not necessarily the inmates that attended bible study, were not following the rules and therefore the entire facility was put on lock down. These acts of defiance coupled with staff resistance brought about the ending of this ministry. I would like to take this opportunity to thank CPC for the continued support that was provided. In the upcoming months I hope to either assist with an existing bible study or to start another one. Your prayers are always welcomed.

ACTS TutoringThe ACTS program continued into our seventh year. ACTS tutoring is a free program for elementary age children at Allen Park on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 8pm. In the past, we had numerous members of our congregation participate as site director and tutors. Currently, Ven Grumoli and Kathy Watts volunteer at ACTS. Young Life Springfield (submitted by Glenna Ryan)To summarize Young Life Springfield in 2011 in one phrase it would be, “God provides.” In 2011, Young Life Springfield maintained the focus on Campaigner Bible Study every Friday night at the Ryan’s. Talking and sharing over dinner was followed by deeper discussions during bible study. Friday night gatherings have grown to about 20 people. God provided help through Linda Lagares who began preparing dinner for us on Fridays, a pure gift from God.

Leader development continues to be a goal. God has provided 4 college leaders and 2 teachers who help transport and develop relationships with the high school students. We have begun breaking down the Campaigner Study into smaller groups lead by 3 of the leaders. This change has been well received by students and leaders alike.

Club takes place at Central High School during Activity period each month. God has provided ideas and leaders to plan and implement clubs and words for me to speak into the hearts of kids. He also provided a room at AIC for a special club during November. Club exposes students to Young Life and gives them a taste of what it might be like to have a relationship with God.

In August, 5 males and 9 females attended camp at Young Life’s Saranac Lake site for the best week of their lives. God provided funding through scholarships made possible through the financial support of Christ Presbyterian Church and a grant from the Presbytery of New England along with private donations. The financial need is great as camp costs about $500 per student and most can barely afford $100. Fund raisers cover some operating expenses like gas, food, and club supplies. Pray for God’s provision through individual donors and additional fundraisers.

On October 8th, leaders headed to Saranac for a leaders retreat and planning time. On November 12th students headed to Saranac for the Fall Weekend Retreat. Many of these students were new to Young Life. The adult Committee for Young Life Springfield consists of the Larose’s, Tongues and Ryan’s. The desire is to revitalize this committee.

In 2012, the vision is to grow deeper in relationship with God and with one another; to recruit other adults to the Committee; and see leaders mature in serving those in their care.

Springfield Pulse Art SpaceNehemiah Ministries, Inc. (NMI) has launched an arts initiative that includes a studio that is available for instructional arts classes, meetings, and can be used by individual artists that may not be able to afford a private studio and a gallery for the display of artwork. The Springfield Pulse has become a hub for relational activity and a springboard for community improvements. So far the studio has hosted 6 different art exhibits providing positive activity for the Metro community and bringing together local agencies and like-minded people. In addition, Pulse has provided three affordable instructional classes, created four window displays that beautify the neighborhood, hosted monthly luncheons for building tenants and neighborhood residents that are interested in reviving the community and made the studio available to two local artists and a neighborhood fellowship group. After the tornado Pulse collaborated with Wellspring and other churches to facilitate arts activities for tornado victims living in the shelter. Pulse has also hosted a block party in collaboration with City Church and facilitated an outdoor open studio for neighborhood residents on a weekly basis during mild weather months. CPC’s contribution to NMI and Pulse has purchased art supplies and food for these events as well as contributing to the funding that is needed to pay rent and utilities to keep the space operational.

Western New England College Campus MinistryPastor Tracy serves as the Protestant Chaplain at WNEC. He leads a Tuesday luncheon with faculty, staff and students. On Tuesday nights, he leads a student bible student where 7-10 students attend. In addition, in the past year, the students went on a “Listening to Christ” Retreat at Pine Brook Camp in Shutesbury. During the year, students took trips to local Christian concerts and Whirlyball.

Softball (submitted by Nikali Benkert)Christ Presbyterian Church continued their participation in the Inter-Church Softball League. This was our 13th season playing on Tuesday nights. It is a joy and blessing to bring people together to glorify God’s name through softball. The primary purpose of our sports ministry is to bring people closer to Him and to develop a relationship with our brothers who come out and play. In 2012, the new season will begin during the last week of April and continue until August.

Living Bread Community Garden (submitted by Elizabeth Tongue)The 'Living Bread Community Garden' was started in April 2011. We were able to purchase and install rain barrels to help keep the garden moist. Ground was broken in April. A few families from Christ Presbyterian planted seeds and seedlings. A student from Springfield Public Day Elementary School also planted some crops. We had assistance from other members at Christ Presbyterian Church setting up and taking down the rain barrels and watering the garden. The most difficult job this summer was keeping the crops moist early enough in the day. Evening planting proved difficult for a few reasons. Crops tend to rot if they are watered too late in the day, and also there are biting insects that come out in the evening near the garden.

There was some scorching heat in the middle of the summer that dried out some of the plants. This summer was a learning process and we will continue to plant and learn. I was also contacted by a local organization that assists handicapped adults, and they came and planted two late summer plots. Even though we had a small harvest this year, I am convinced that if we get the rain barrels in place by the end of March, prepare the soil and plant earlier in 2012, we will have a more bountiful harvest.

Danny Ray EventCPC lead a multi-church outreach event that invited illusionist Danny Ray to Springfield. As usual God exceeded our plans and expectations Sunday night. Here are a few of the highlights:

Around 1200 people packed out historical Old First Church—even the balcony was full.

The Sci-Tech Jazz Band led and discipled by Gary Bernice warmed and energized the crowd for 30 minutes prior to beginning.

CPC’s Worship Band, led by music director, Nikali Benkert set the tone for the evening with three incredible songs of praise to God. The place was jumping up and down, raising hands and shouting out for joy.

We heard from Young Life Springfield Leader Glenna Ryan about their outreach mission to students in Springfield. Student Arianna and Meme shared how their involvement in Young Life led them to the Lord.

Patrick Murray shared the vision and ministry of Nehemiah Ministries, Inc, while participant and art teacher Karen told the crowd how her involvement with the art ministries of Nehemiah has strengthen and reconnected her with God.

An offering over $1400 was taken to be split between Nehemiah Ministries and Young Life Springfield.

Danny then mesmerized the crowd for over 45 minutes with his incredible illusions and the truth of the Gospel.

We don’t know how many accepted or turned back to Jesus, but we do know that everybody in that room heard and experienced the Gospel clearly. As Danny led the people in prayer, I heard many voices praying out loud to accept Jesus into their lives.

Danny’s videographer and assistant, Jeremiah, emailed saying, "I was telling Danny and Kim (Danny's wife) that in the 700 + shows that Danny and I have done, that was in my top 3 favorite. It was truly a blessing to be part of that event in such a historical building but more importantly seeing how multiple churches came together to make it happen. Thank you once again and we look forward to partnering together in the future. It would be great if we could look at making this an annual event."

It is important to note as this God-filled event was happening in Springfield, two murders occurred that night, one that was only a few blocks away, the other a 16-year-old boy. This just highlights the importance of the Church in Springfield coming together again and putting these types of events on to proclaim the Hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to curb the violence in Springfield.Immediately after the event and the days that followed I have received numerous calls, drop-ins, and conversations from Christians and non-christians that attended that event that were moved and so thankful for the event. The Spirit filled Old First Church Sunday night. For one moment in Springfield, people were relaxed, put down their burdens and heard the Gospel clearly through the music, speakers and Danny Ray. Thank you for you support and continued encouragement.

In addition you can check out the web-page at www.christ-pres.org to see other missionaries and agencies that CPC financially supports.

Springfield Christian Ministries Tornado ReliefSubmitted by Lisa Baker

On Wednesday, June 1, 2011, when an EF3 level tornado devastated Western Massachusetts covering 36.5 to 39 miles, we were unprepared. In its wake, the stunned responses of the people, both those affected and those spared, began the slow and painful process of relief and recovery. Under the leadership of the Session of CPC, we organized area churches to form a Christian response. On June 6, Springfield Christian Ministries Tornado Relief, now Springfield Christian Ministries Disaster Relief was born. Initially begun during the relief effort to help clear properties of downed trees, SCMDR has grown into a Ministry of Presence, the founding hub of the local Volunteer Village. This important ministry is a key element in the long term recovery efforts.

SCMTR was a wonderful effort of committed individuals who just showed up, Ed Bates tirelessly worked during the days and months after the tornado. Always there to check a home, send out a team or even roll up his sleeves and cut some trees, we would not have done all we did without his help. Bob and Cheri Turnbull were also indispensable. Bob as back up to Ed and Cheri as my back up and calming stone. Nikali and Lisa Benkert used both brawn and brain to support the work. Whether in the office or field, the Benkerts’ spent hours helping their neighbors. Bob and Eliz Tongue put their heart and soul into the work. Andy Benkert spent many hours cutting trees. Pat Murray and the Nehemiah House provided the use of their home and willingness to go into the field. There are so many others, most importantly the Session who had the spirit and the foresight to let this mission grow.

Through the founding work of SCMTR, other non-profits began to work together and formed a long term recovery organization, called Springfield Community Together. SCMTR oversees the volunteer hospitality of this new emerging organization.

In addition to all the volunteer hours, SCMTR received over $18,000 of relief donations from various churches, organizations, and individuals. Currently we have spent about $12,000 on tools, equipment, maintenance, various outreach programs to children and their families in the shelter, direct relief and administrative costs. Without the generous donations, we would have been unable to organize the monumental volunteer projects and labor.

In spite of obstacles such as city deadlines, competing disasters, waning interest SCMTR has coordinated the following volunteer efforts through 12/31/11:

Nominating Committee’s ReportSubmitted by NikaliBenkert, Chair

The current nominating committee consists of seven members - two designated by and from the session (Nikali Benkert and Tom Quinney), one designated by and from the Board of Deacons (Erin Quinney) and four elected by the congregation (Brian Moore, Bill Kaeding, Danielle Benkert, and Jeane Clay). The Chair of the Committee, designated by the session, is Nikali Benkert. The Pastor, Tracy Johnson, is a member of the nominating committee, ex-officio.

The committee met on several occasions reviewing vacant positions and matching available members of our congregation to those positions. After prayer and discussion, we believe that the Spirit led us to those members of our congregation being called to serve.

We thank those persons who will be leaving office at the end of February 2012(upon completion of elected terms). They are: Lillie Hickerson, Andy Benkert, Ven Grumoli, and Justine Williams. We thank them for their tireless and dedicated service to Christ Presbyterian Church.

Treasurer and Financial Secretary’s ReportSubmitted by Tom Quinney

As shown on the table below, Weekly Tithes and Offerings increased for the 7th consecutive year.

Year Annual Amount Change ($) Change (%)2002 $101,4582003 $83,192 (18,266) -18.0%2004 $78,592 (4,600) -5.5%2005 $81,448 $2,856 3.6%2006 $93,066 $11,618 14.3%2007 $99,973 $6,907 7.4%2008 $105,891 $5,918 5.9%2009 $109,704 $3,813 3.6%2010 $116,891 $7,187 6.6%2011 $117,148 $257 0.22%

Despite this increase in Weekly Tithes and Offerings cash income was almost $11,000 short of meeting our expenses. Expenses for 2011 included about $4,500 added to the pastor’s salary and above budget expenses of $5,200 for the building and grounds, which included $4,300 for snow plowing. General Fund Unrestricted Net Assets were $23,319 as of 12/31/2011 (See the General Fund Balance Sheet).

The table below summarizes activity in other Funds besides the General Fund.

In 2011, we maintained our commitment to tithe undesignated contributions to Missions, about $12,080 for the year. The ministries that were funded with this “tithe” are shown on the Mission Fund Income Statement.

The Deacons were funded in 2011 by monies given for special holiday offerings, which decreased by $600 from 2010. This arrangement has worked well and we are thankful for those who gave to the Deacon’s Fund. Memorial gifts for 2011 are listed at the end of this report.

Two expenses were funded so as to not increase the deficit in The General Fund. Early in the year, a new computer was purchased using a gift designated for that purpose with the remaining amount funded by a transfer of $388.25 from the Memorial Fund to the General Fund. Later in the year, the $800 organ repair was funded by transfers of $617.25 from the Special Events Fund and $182.75 from the Memorial Fund.

After the Tornado, Session authorized a Disaster Relief Fund to segregate relief activities from the General Fund. Over $18,000 was received, mostly from outside of CPC, and expenses were about $11,500. Finally, the Special Events Fund was used to account for the Danny Ray Event and the Leadership Retreat.

I would like to recognize those who served with me during 2011. Ingrid Thresher, Treasurer, undertook Accounts Payable and Payroll. Bill Kaeding was Financial Secretary. Lise Gill assisted Bill. John Calkins and Bob McClellan served as counters, maintaining accountability with respect to our receipt of cash donations. I was trained and assisted by Don Ryan in the production of financial reports, preparing the budget and overseeing the financial officers. I want to especially thank Don Ryan for 6 years of serving by creating, organizing, overseeing and maintaining a financial accounting system that is efficient, timely and above reproach.

The Budget Deficit Dilemma and Plan

Over the past six years our giving has gone up 44%, however, over those years we have lived on a streamlined budget and have taken some planned losses out of savings hoping that the increase of giving would catch-up to our basic budget expenses. This past year we took on an $11,000 deficit in our budget. If we continue at the same pace of giving (without dramatic increase) CPC will be financially insolvent by the 1st Quarter of 2014.

Potential Financial ForecastAnnual Offerings Deficit Bank Balance as

The Session feels that the savings has reached a minimum threshold and we are unwilling to dip further in savings to manage our expenses. The only solution then is to bridge the $10,000 budget deficit.

The total pledge amount for 2012 is basically the same for 2011 with 3 fewer people pledging but with a 4.4% increase (around $3500) in giving is anticipated in the same 28 people that pledged both in 2011 and 2012. However, using the same analysis last year we anticipated over a 6% increase. We probably should expect giving to between the same level or $3500 increase. With that understanding, Session decided it had to make some unwanted and drastic cuts in the budget as well as challenge the congregation with increased giving.

For 2011, Session is recommending to keep the Terms of Call for Pastor Tracy at 15/16 time. The Board of Pension increased the medical insurance expense by .075% to 20.25% of the total effective salary. To accommodate that increase, Pastor Tracy asked for his salary to be reduced by $355 so the medical insurance increase is a zero net gain on the total terms of call. To increase Pastor Tracy to full time we would need to increase giving by another $6000. The recommended Terms of Call is incorporated into a 2011 Budget along with other expenses that is shown as the last column of the General Fund Income Statement.

Cuts(1) Per Capita: This is the set amount of money (apportionment) per member that congregations pay to the larger denomination. Every year we ask members to voluntary pay their portion. For 2012 it is $41.94 per member. The total cost for Christ Presbyterian Church for 2012 is $3,733. Most years we received under $1000 to pay the per capita apportionment, the session pays the rest out of general giving. Last year we subsidized per capita giving to the tune of $3700 out of general giving. We feel we are unable to go into savings to subsidize this cost anymore. This is not a protest action, but a decision based on the financial situation. The Session will remit any per capita given to the larger body. At the end of the year, if we are in the black, we will pay the remaining portion of our per capita apportionment until we break even or pay the full amount (whichever comes first).

Christ Presbyterian Church 2011 Annual Report 17

Page 18: Women’s Association€¦  · Web viewI am humbled that I am called to serve a people that eagerly seek God’s will through His written Word, and allow that Word coupled with the

(2) Custodian Position: Over the years, we have made cuts in many areas and our budget allocations cover the basic operational and program expenses. As of the end of February, we will regrettably be laying off Juan Ortiz and going to a volunteer custodian position. Our hope is that this is a temporary action. This will save us around $4200 from the budget.

By cutting the Per Capita and Custodian Position and freezing or slightly reducing all other line items, we end up $3500 short of a balanced budget. That budget deficit is equal to the number that is on the high side of our expected giving increase—which would balance our budget and not dip into savings, but at a cost that satisfies no one.

Stewardship Challenge:While the Session feels the budget cuts are necessary actions at this moment, we also feel it is important to challenge the congregation to increase its giving. Regardless of the budget, we need to explore options to increase giving and revenue. Options to consider:

1. New People and Givers. Our average giving unit pledges a little over $3000. We would need at least 4 new average givers.

2. Find a Church to rent our space.3. Current contributors give more.

Planned Stewardship & Extra PledgeWe realize that not all giving units are equal and that not all people pledge or plan their giving. Sometimes giving is best done when spontaneous and from the heart. However, we also realize that a discipline of giving needs to be cultivated and planned as each of us as able. Planned financial stewardship enables a habit and discipline of giving that can help create a lifestyle of generosity and increased giving. All giving should be done joyfully and willingly and should not be coerced.

It is in the Spirit that the Session sets before you the above financial goals and milestones. We are asking each giving/unit to either (1) fill out a Challenge Pledge Card and share with us your planned extra giving to meet the above goals or (2) if you already have filled out a 2012 pledge card to challenge yourself to give a bit extra and share with us your planned increased giving over your current pledge by filling out a yellow Challenge Pledge Card.

Essentials of Faith

We recognize that differences of opinion exist regarding non-essential theological issues, worship styles and sacramental practices. We believe, however, that these differences are overcome through sharing a common life in Jesus. In Christ we have freedom, constrained by His Lordship and His Holy Word. The following statements are essential statements of faith:

We Believe. . .1

…there is only one God who is sovereign over all creation. God eternally coexists in three equal persons: Father, Son, Holy Spirit, as revealed in the Bible.

…Jesus Christ alone is Lord of all and the way of salvation. He is the living Word of God, the perfect image of the invisible God—fully God and fully human.

…the Bible is the only infallible and inerrant written Word of God, inspired by Holy Spirit, and is the first and final authority in faith and life.

…humanity is created in the image of God to know, love, obey and worship Him. Humanity freely chose to disobey this created purpose, separating us from God and bringing sin and death into the world.Every aspect of the human person is completely broken by sin and no human effort can fully resolve or redeem this defect.

…we were created for eternal life which is the free and gracious gift of God. This life is made possible by the once-and-for-all sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross and His resurrection from the dead. Jesus defeated the power of death and paid the penalty for our sins so that we might once again be in right relationship with God. The salvation that God offers is only given by grace and received by faith that Jesus is Lord and Savior for all.

…the Holy Spirit moves us to accept the atoning sacrifice of Jesus and compels us to be conformed into the image of God. The Holy Spirit continually works to renew our minds and increasingly transforms us toward a life of holiness, justice, loving kindness, and walking humbly with God.

…the redeeming and reconciling work of Jesus in the world continues through the Church, the body of Christ. We are commanded by Jesus and empowered by the Holy Spirit, to proclaim the Gospel by loving God, loving our neighbor, and making all people disciples of Jesus.

…evil exists in the world and is personified in Satan, our accuser. He is at enmity with God and exists to deceive all people. God is sovereign over all and is greater than all the evil forces in the world.

…we are called to live a life of holiness and to be faithful stewards of God’s creation. We accomplish this through the generous and obedient use of our spiritual gifts, time, talents, and resources all to the glory of God.

1 These essentials are the basics of faith and are further expounded in The Book of Confessions.

Membership Covenant

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10

At CPC we never ask our members to do more than the Bible clearly teaches. We only expect our members to do what the Bible expects every Christian to do. These expectations are spelled out below.

In the book of Ephesians Paul talks about the work that Christ has done in our lives. He is turning us into his very own masterpiece – a poem. The Greek word here is “poeima.” When our lives line up with God’s intent, we are his artisanship – his masterpiece.

At CPC we affirm that beliefs are not worth much unless they are translated into actions. Beliefs that are not expressed in action are only opinions. We want much more for our lives. Based on what the bible teaches, we feel strongly about these historic practices.

1. Celebrating God: The scriptures call God’s people to gather on a regular basis to celebrate, sing, pray, and to learn. We come into the Lord’s presence – together each week. It is crucial to develop a rhythm of regular weekly worship. Personal worship is important but cannot replace the biblical direction to gather together to worship our God. We practice weekly worship in response to the teachings of God’s Word.

2. Connecting With God’s People: The life of faith is never a solitary act. The Bible emphasizes the word “we”. Though our faith is found in an individual relationship with God, it is best expressed in the context of spiritual relationships. We are committed to providing a number of ways for you to be involved in the fellowship of this congregation as a source of spiritual friendship, accountability and mentoring.

3. Listening To God:Since God’s Word is the only completely reliable and truthful authority, we accept the Bible as our manual for living. Our first question when faced with a decision is “What does the Bible say?” We practice daily Bible reading, Bible study and prayer. Listening best occurs when time is set aside each day to hear from God from his Word and talk directly with him in prayer.

4. Giving To God:The Bible teaches that every Christian is called to “full-time” Christian service, regardless of his or her vocation. We practice the truth that every believer is a minister by encouraging every member to find a place of service and ministry. Every believer has direct access to God through prayer and Bible reading. At CPC we practice tithing for the support of Christ’s body, the church, as God commands. We recognize that giving at least 10% of our income is Biblical and a paradigmatic standard of giving.

5. Inviting People to God:It is the responsibility of every Christian to share the Good News with those with whom God brings us into contact. We practice personal sharing about Christ and inviting people into a relationship with Jesus including inviting them to church.
