    Lydia Koidula (1843 1886)Lydia Emilie Florentine Jannsen, known after her penname Lydia Koidula was an Estonian poet. Hersobriquet means 'Lydia of the Dawn' in Estonian. Itwas given her by the writer Carl Robert Jakobson. Sheis also frequently referred to as Koidulaulik 'Singer ofthe Dawn'.

    In Estonia, like elsewhere in Europe, writing was notconsidered a suitable career for a respectable younglady in the mid-nineteenth-century. Koidula's poetryand her newspaper work for her populist father,

    Johann Voldemar Jannsen (18191890) remainedanonymous. In spite of this, she was a major literaryfigure, the founder of Estonian theatre, and closelyallied to Carl Robert Jakobson (1841-1882), theinfluential radical and Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald(1803-1882), writer of the Estonian national epic,Kalevipoeg (The Son of Kalev).

    She was member of council of Estonian first SongFestival in 1869.

    Marie Under (1883 1980)

    Marie Under was one of the greatest Estonianpoets who wrote about joy, love, whose workswere full of happiness. Her latest works weremore dispirited and sad. This was related theevents during II World War and her escape toSweden.

    Beginning in September 1944, the U.S.S.R.occupied Estonia. Under and her family fled toSweden. They spent almost a year in arefugee camp. In 1945, the family moved toMlarhjden, a suburb of Stockholm, Sweden,where Under lived until her death onSeptember 25, 1980. She is buried in theWoodland Cemetery in Stockholm.

    Marie Under poetry is most famous in Estoniabecause of its beauty, simple words, Estonianlike and feminine.

    Marju Lauristin (1940 - )

    Marju Lauristin is an Estonian politician andsocial scientist. Her father Johannes Lauristinsigned away Estonia's freedom to the SovietUnion in 1940.

    Together with Edgar Savisaar, in 1988 Lauristinestablished Rahvarinne, the first large-scaleindependent political movement in Estonia sincethe beginning of the Soviet occupation. In 1990she was deputy speaker of the Estonian

    parliament. From 1992 to 1994 she was theminister of Social Affairs of Estonia (EstonianSocial Democratic Party/'Moderates'). Later, shewas also a member of the Riigikogu, elected as amember of the People's Party Moderates.

    Lauristin graduated from the Tartu StateUniversity (now Tartu University) in 1966 with adegree in Journalism and Sociology of MassCommunication. In 1976, Lauristin completed herPhD studies in Journalism at Moscow University.

    Since 2003, Lauristin has been a professor ofSocial communication at Tartu University.

    Malala Yousafzai foundation makes first grant

    Malala Yousafzai, thePakistani schoolgirlbrought to England afterbeing shot in the head bythe Taliban, hasannounced the firstdonation from her neweducation charity with

    the support of HollywoodactorAngelina Jolie.

    The 15-year-old set upthe Malala Fund after theTaliban tried toassassinate her in October 2012 for asserting her right to go to school in herhome country. Malala, who now attends Edgbaston high school for girls inBirmingham, said it was the happiest moment of her life in a video played atthe Women in the World summit in New York.

    She spent hours undergoing major surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospitalin Birmingham where surgeons tried to repair the damage caused by a bulletthat grazed her brain.

    The grant of US$45,000 (29,500) will be given to an unnamed organisationin the Swat Valley in Pakistan to support the education of 40 girls aged five to12 who would otherwise be forced into domestic labour.

    The organisation, which was not named for security reasons, will offer a safeplace for the girls to study as well as financial support for their families.

    In a video played to an audience of thousands Malala said: "Announcing thefirst grant of the Malala Fund is the happiest moment in my life.

    "I invite all of you to support the Malala Fund and let us turn the education of40 girls into 40 million girls."

    Human rights activist and trade unionist who became involved in the NorthernIreland civil rights movement in the 1960s

    She first became involved in the trade union movement when she wassuspended from her job as a social worker in west Belfast for challenging theway desperately poor people were being treated. She began campaigning toorganise and revalue the work and contribution of "forgotten" workers, mostof them women in low-paid jobs.

    Inez helped to found and was an active member of the Vital Voices globaladvisory network, which gives support to women challenging gender-basedviolence and social and economic exclusion. The network has led importantcampaigns to outlaw and challenge the trafficking of women.

    Inezs life and work have

    been portrayed in NewYork by Meryl Streep inthe play SEVEN. Theinternationally acclaimedwork depicts the lives ofseven remarkable womenleaders, as they triumphover huge obstacles tocreate major changes to

    Octavia Hill (18381912)

    She was an English social reformer,whose main concern was the welfareof the inhabitants of cities, especiallyLondon, in the second half of thenineteenth century. At age 14 shewas working for the welfare ofworking-class people.

    Hill was a moving force behind thedevelopment of social housing. Shebelieved in self-reliance, and made ita key part of her housing systemthat she and her assistants knewtheir tenants personally andencouraged them to betterthemselves.

    Another of Hill's concerns was the availability of open spaces for poor people.She campaigned against development on existing suburban woodlands, andhelped to save London's Hampstead Heath from being built on. She was oneof the three founders of the National Trust, set up to preserve places ofhistoric interest or natural beauty for the enjoyment of the British public.

    She was a founder member of the charity Family Action which organisedcharitable grants and pioneered a home-visiting service that formed the basis

    for modern social work.

    She was also the founder of the Army Cadet Force, giving boys from poorbackgrounds an opportunity for informal learning, based on the core values ofSelf-Reliance, Cleanliness, Order and Discipline. 152 Years later the ACFstill holds these values at the heart of its work.
