Week 1 Women 10/26/19 Women love the game as much as the men do BY GLENN MILLER Roy Hobbs Baseball The men and women’s divisions of the Roy Hobbs World Series share traits and names. The six women’s teams playing this weekend have names one nds on men’s teams - Marlins, Red Sox, Yankees and Jays. The women’s divisions is open to players of all ages, such as 16-year-olds from California named Patsy Lane of the East Coast Marlins and Niamh Mayhew of the Toronto Fusion and 15-year Alex Adler of the Marlins. Patsy, who traveled here with her mother, Martha, understands the game’s nuances. “It’s like a team but also individual,” Patsy said before practice Thursday at the PDC. “But also individual so when you’re batting you’re also batting for your team.” Patsy got hooked on the game the same way many men did. She watched games with her father and played catch in the backyard with a brother and signed up for Little League at 13. “It’s the only sport that ever interested her,” Martha Lane said. Mrs. Lane said Patsy was welcomed by the Little League near their Anaheim area home. “Fortunately, she hasn’t run into a lot of the discrimination,” Mrs. Lane said. Niamh Mayhew of the Fusion traveled from California and is reveling in the baseball environment. “With women’s baseball everyone is so accepting,” Niamh said. Coming to Fort Myers she has run into familiar faces from the women’s baseball community. “We all know each other because the community is small,” Niamh said. One of her Fusion teammates this weekend is 49-year- old Kim McElcheran. She loves the game as much as any man in the Roy Hobbs World Series. “It’s a smart person’s game,” McElcheran said. She has advice for younger teammates and opponents. “Just keep making mistakes,” McElcheran said, “That’s how you learn. Don’t be afraid.” Jan Yuvan of the East Coast Yankees is a World Series veteran, one who has played on men’s and women’s teams. “There’s camaraderie in both and I have a great time with both,” Yuvan, 55, said. An organizational wizard who helps promote women’s baseball is Marlins Manager Adriane Adler. “I can’t even begin to do justice to what she has done for women’s baseball,” Yuvan said. “She is such an ambassador for the game. She does whatever she can to pull teams and tournaments together because around the country there aren’t enough women playing baseball to sustain leagues.” Adler’s 15-year-old daughter, Alex, is on the Marlins. Adler pointed out that her daughter was here even before she was born. “I was pregnant with her when I was playing,” Adler said. “This is her rst year here on this side of the womb.” Photo by Greg Wagner A very focused Patsy Lane of the East Coast Marlins.
