CASE STUDY: ARE WE FACING A GLASS CEILING OR GLASS CLIFF?“Glass Cliff” is the phenomenon studied by academics that show a disproportionate number of women reaching positions of leadership at particularly precarious times. Sometimes, the reasoning is that women are set up to fail, pushed into a position of leadership when a fall guy is needed. A noted Sociologist from the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University has stated: “when you look at opportunities for leadership that one might describe as high-risk, women are more likely to be selected into that kind of role.” This Keynote presentation will discuss the phenomenon of the “glass cliff” and the effect this has had on the speaker’s career and the way she has met these challenges and succeeded.

10:00 - 10:30

CASE STUDY: DIVERSITY IN LEADERSHIP: QUOTA’S VS. MERITIn a recent white paper the notion of “merit” as an assessment of past performance and future potential has shown to be highly subjective assessment that perpetuates gender inequality. However, “quotas” have proven to be one of the most significant ways that increased diversity in leadership can be achieved. Implementing quotas is about creating a deeper level of reflection on what constitutes good leadership and recognising that a greater diversity of experience can predict and enable future performance. Diversity in leadership is about enhancing performance in Australia’s corporate and political arena and driving a more inclusive culture by choosing the right candidate and not the right gender. This Keynote topic will examine the quotas vs merit system and outline the challenges faced by women leaders.
