2017 UPDATE
REMINDER: WHY APEC
WOMEN IN
TRANSPORTATION?
Women across APEC are vastly underrepresented in each of the major modes of transportation—air,
maritime, road, and rail—as well as in infrastructure design, road and facility construction and
maintenance, and ground-passenger transportation.
Although transportation makes up 10–20 percent of jobs in APEC economies, women’s share of
employment in the sector typically falls below 25 percent.
Women also lack a voice in the design and implementation of transportation resources, and
often restrict their use of public transportation due to fear for their safety.
BACKGROUND
2011–2012
TPTWG launched the WiT initiative to expand opportunities for women in the transportation sector; formed APEC WiT Task Force, co-chaired by US, Viet Nam, and Philippines
2013–2014
WiT Task Force undertook research to identify critical conditions and concerns among women working in transport jobs – but the work constrained by lack of data across all modes
2015
WiT Task Force launched APEC WiT Data Framework and Best Practices Initiative, including publication of full report, WiT Forum, and call to action
