All submarine nuclear ratings complete the same training pipeline as their

surface nuclear counterparts. Nuclear personnel do not attend BESS.

BUPERS 3Naval Submarine School

• Sailors learn the basic theory behind the construction and operation of submarines including

ships systems, organization and safety.

• All non-nuclear submariners attend Basic Enlisted Submarine School (BESS) prior to arrival

onboard their ship.

• BESS prepares Sailors to pursue submarine qualifications upon initial assignment to an

operational submarine. BESS also performs critical screening of future submariners in the

areas of adaptability and reliability.

What is submarine berthing like?

o Upon checking in you will be assigned a bunk

onboard. This will be your space to do with what

you wish within standards.

o Bunks are required to be made up when not in

use with sheets, spread, and a pillow case.

(Some units require that pillow cases be white.)

o A laundry bag is provided.

o Some personnel have entertainment in their

bunks including personal DVD players, pictures,

cards, laptops, etc.

How big are the bunks?

o The average bunk is 6’ x 2.5'. The average mattress is made of foam or coil springs and about 4.5"

thick depending on its lifetime wear. Most bunks have ~20 inches of space between the top of the

mattress and bunk ceiling.

o Most racks are designed with a rack pan accessible by lifting the lid (mattress box). This is storage

for clothing and non-perishable items. It extends the length of the bunk and approximately 8" depth.

What Can I Expect My Schedule to Be Like When I First Report?

You will have 12 months to complete Submarine Warfare Qualification in addition to watchstation

qualifications.

Your first few weeks will be an adjustment period where you will meet the crew, learn the schedule and find

your way around the ship. Crew members and your sponsor will help as you become acclimated.

Qualifications are a key factor to ensuring your success aboard a submarine. Qualifications will be achieved

by studying Submarine Onboard Training (SOBT), Piping Tabs, system examinations, and asking questions

of the personnel already qualified. When you are ready to receive a check-out you will ask a Qualification

Petty Officer (QPO) for a check-out and they will test your knowledge by asking you questions or having you

perform specific tasks related to the qualification you are attempting. For example, you may be tasked with

donning a Fire Fighting Ensemble and SCBA to complete a check-out.

When not deployed, the crew works from the Pre-deployment Training (PDTP) Building and conducts

individual and team training from the PDTP offices or at Trident Training Facility.

All personnel are required to complete an at-sea and inport watchstation prior to Submarine Warfare

Qualification.

You may be tasked with cleaning, painting and preservation of the ship.

You will be introduced to the Commanding Officer (CO), Executive Officer (XO), Chief of the Boat (COB),

Department Head, Division Officer and Leading Chief Petty Officer within the first week onboard. As you

gain experience and responsibility onboard you may interact with them everyday even as a Seaman. You

will know the CO, XO, and COB and they will know you.
