Sailed round the world (the globe, the planet, the whole damn thing), by herself, her lonesome, just Jessica, on a boat, with a winch or two, and a webcam, and a small army of fb friends and family who made her story bloody inspirational and she came home and bought a prom gown and went to a party. What a bloody legend. Didn’t win an America’s cup, but could have if only someone had asked her to.

sports is a meritocracy. if it is good, people will watch it

on-field excellence is directly impacted by off-field decision making quality

boards make the key decisions

Premise

Page 48: Women in Sport

diversity adds to the quality of boards

there is not sufficient diversity in sporting boards

women would add to the diversity, and therefore women will add to the quality of decision making

Premise

Page 49: Women in Sport

only thing that works to increase minority participation (in situations where the decision is subjective)

is lots of time or a mandated minimum standard

(i.e. quotas)

My Experience:

Page 50: Women in Sport

We don’t have time, and we won’t have quotas

we don't have time: because Sport business constantly reminds you that no sport has an entitlement to audience, revenue etc

and we won't have quotas because

My Belief:

Page 51: Women in Sport

we don’t have theballs

Page 52: Women in Sport

we don’t have the

Page 53: Women in Sport

“the women in this government might just be shading the men”

thepunch.com.au editor David Penberthy(never hurt a goat)

Page 54: Women in Sport

Proposal:1. selection process transparent (i.e. advertised)

2. (at least) one women on the selection panel

3. and then 50% of the candidates interviewed for board positions must be women.

then chose only on merit!

Page 55: Women in Sport

based on a successful, proven system final decision made on pure merit it is a market system it will not hurt any women

and really, guys, it won't hurt a bit.

Benefits:

Page 56: Women in Sport

in 2006: 70 percent of the NFL's players were black but only 6 percent of the head coaches were African-Americans

Page 57: Women in Sport

in 2010: 70 percent of the NFL's players are black but now 22 percent of the head coaches are African-Americans

International Sports and Facilities Management helps organisations in the sports and leisure industries understand their assets and manage them better through a number of processes we have been using (and improving) for over 20 years.

We believe the key is understanding that the sport industry has unique properties and that nothing can be done without extensive consultation to understand all the intangible (read: emotional) elements.

While the intangibles are important, all sporting and recreational organisations need to know and manage the boring stuff: know exactly what their assets are, manage and maintain them, monetise as appropriate, and never forget your community wants you around.

Sports will always be about encouraging heaps of participation at all levels and brilliance at the elite level. We help organisations devote their energy to the sporting bit, and not on the boring stuff.

Thanks to our founder, Graeme Watson, we have been doing this for 20 years and have worked in every state in Australia, across NZ and Asia and for virtually every major sporting body and many Clubs and Government entities.
