Research Experiences for Undergraduates

(REU)• On average 25-30% of the participants have been

women.

• Students have typically completed at the very minimum four courses beyond sophomore calculus.

• Student gets assigned to compatible faculty member.

• Enthusiastic faculty members are key to success.

• 10 to 12 women any given year in faculty of professors.

Mills College Summer Mathematics Institute

(SMI)• The Mills SMI was first conceived in 1990

• It was a six week intensive mathematics program for women

• Encouraged women to pursue mathematics to the graduate level

• The program consisted of mainly four seminars

Program Results!• Results of SMI

o Between the years of 1991-1995 over 100 participants were involved in the program.

o 62 participants continued onto graduate school.o Program more successful than anticipated.o Reason for success was due to the influence of strong role models.

• Results of Spelman-Bryn Mawro 1992-1993 16 participants continued onto other programs.o Fourteen obtained bachelors programs and 9 of those entered

graduate school.o 1994-1995 program 17 participated.o 10 provided research data for the following summer and seven got

Bachelors.
