Between radio commercials, posted signs, ticket outlets around the Roanoke Valley, word of mouth, not to mention ads, columns and stories in The Daily Herald — if you don’t know already, you’ll certainly know now this weekend is for women in the form of the Roanoke Valley Woman Expo.

“Our publisher Titus Workman and I have been in other markets and have learned how much fun it is to have a wom-en’s expo,” said Carol Crittendon, expo organizer and The Daily Herald Advertis-ing Director. “We already had a successful Women in Business Luncheon Scholar-ship and when we were brainstorming the idea, it seemed logical to extend the lun-cheon and add an Ultimate Girls’ Day Out. The two-day event is the Roanoke Valley Woman Expo, named after our quarterly women’s magazine: Roanoke Valley Wom-an.”

The 13th annual Women in Business Luncheon Scholarship kicks off the fes-tivities Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Kirkwood Adams Community Center on Hamilton Street in Roanoke Rapids. The scholarship goes to a local woman who may have been out of or away from the classroom for a time dealing with divorce, career change or other life issues, and who wants to at-tend Halifax Community College.

Mrs. North Carolina United States will be the guest speaker, david’s Restaurant

is catering lunch and tickets are $10. All money raised goes to the scholarship fund.

Day two starts at 10 a.m. Saturday also at Kirkwood Adams and is the Ultimate Girls’ Day Out. Tickets are $7 — $2 from each ticket sold goes to Hannah’s Place.

“The day is for women, for the most part by women, and in celebration of women,” Crittendon said.

The five-hour event includes The Qual-ity Shop fashion show, shopping, fun, free health screenings from Halifax Regional, live entertainment, fun, how-to ideas, food, fashion makeovers, fun, demonstra-tions, giveaways and yet even more fun.

“We wanted to find a way for businesses, particularly those without a retail store-front like Miche bags, Jamberry Nails and Phoenix Trading, to connect with Roanoke Valley women,” Crittendon said. “Many of these exhibitors are home-based busi-nesses and unless you attend a party, you may not be aware they exist.”

Miche representative Joy Bogey, of Grif-ton, is looking forward to visiting Roanoke Rapids for the first time. She invited a friend to attend with her, and they plan to make a day of it even after the expo ends.

Bogey said Miche bags come in small to large sizes, and the bases come in hard and soft.

“You purchase one base, they come in four sizes, and buy shells for the exterior,” she said. “You don’t have to change out the

contents.” Bogey will bring a discount to expo at-

tendees — a bundle package of one base and two shells at a price of about 15 per-cent savings.

How should expo attendees maximize the event?

Crittendon expressed her theory, “Visit each and every booth. Enter their draw-ings and learn about their products. At a recent show a friend and I attended, it was like we were savoring each vendor. We agreed that if one of the people in our party wanted to learn more, explore and make a purchase, we would support each other and take the time to enjoy our-

selves.”Not only will Key Fitness offer its Life-

style Meal Replacement tasting samples at its booth, but also Director Darren Harris said they will be on stage demonstrating chair yoga — whether at work or home Key Fitness will illustrate ways to exer-cise and relax.

Jamberry Nails independent consul-tant India Moore, of Chocowinity and formerly of Weldon, received a call from her sister saying she had to sign up for the expo so she could bring the ladies of the Roanoke Valley a different option in nail adornment.

“I didn’t wear nail polish,” Moore said. “When I saw these, it changed for me. Now
