Opening Sequence AnalysisThe woman in Black

At first we see a close up of a teapot pouring some pretend liquid into a tea cup. From this we immediately think that a child is playing with her dolls. Over this we hear some dark , mysterious non digetic music which could cause tension between the audience

and make them contemplate what may happen next. After this we see another close up of a doll drinking the pretend liquid, this could make the audience feel very unsettled as the doll has jet black eyes and a very creepy smile. This may give us the feeling that the young girls have a dark/creepy side to them.

After this we see a long shot of the three girls in a very distressed looking attic playing with their dolls. The girls are brushing their dolls hair which tells us that they care about their dolls a great amount and treat them as if they were real people. They all have happy expressions on their faces which suggests that they are having fun playing with their dolls.

We then see a medium long shot and it looks like they are looking at someone or something, the use of this shot tells us that the subject or person watching them has some kind of power or control over the girls. The audience are aware that something or someone is watching the girls but are left on the edges of their seats as they don't know what that something is.

The camera then zooms in towards the window and then back out to reveal the girls staring at the window and it is clear that they are being forced to do so.They all stand up at the exact same time with no expression on their faces. It becomes clear to the audience that the girls do not want to be doing this. We then see a medium close up of a young girls hand which has a tea cup in it which she then drops and

we watch it smash. The 3 girls then start to walk towards the window and it is made to look like nothing can stop them. This becomes clear to the audience because the girls are walking directly over their dolls causing their heads to smash and break, we know that the girls care about their dolls very much so we

know that they are being controlled.

After this we see a medium close up of one girls hand opening the window. The camera then pulls back to show all three girls opening the window. They then proceed to open the window. This creates a horrible tense atmosphere within the audience , as they know what is going to happen but they don't want it to. This is very unsettling and nerve wracking for the audience.

Suddenly the girls jump from the window. The music gets much louder and is very unsettling. It goes silent for one second and we then hear , presumably their mother screm ' my babies'. This cry turns in to a scream. This suggests that the 3 girls are dead and leaves the audience feeling very upset. The camera then zooms out from the window showing the empty attic. There is then a close up of a dolls face which has a very creepy smile on its face which suggests

that it could of been planned. The camera continues to zoom out and on the right hand side of the screen a figure in black with a black netting over their face appears. This suggests to the audience that she is the one who made the 3 young girls jump from the window . This creates a tense atmosphere and leaves the audience on the edge of their seats. They will have lots on un answered questions in their heads and will want to fid out who that figure is and why they did that to those innocent young girls. This will make the audience want to continue watching the film.
