Woman in black-how is sound used to create suspense and other effects in the scene? In this is set in 1916-1917 and the opening scene is three girls killing them selves by jumping out of the window in the room they are playing in. during this scene the music creates a lot of suspense. The music during this scene is typical of the period it is very spooky. This creates suspense as the children look happy playing with their dolls, but the sound makes us feel like something bad is about to happen. This slow bonging creates this effect to. This gets loader as the scene goes on until the children look all at the same direction passed were the camera is placed. The sound then pauses for a second or two before the children look giving the sense that someone has entered the room. Because we can’t see what it is the music makes this all more tense and surreal. The bonging then starts again. However this time it is acting like a hypnotist. This becomes more apparent when the children start to stand on their toys that they were looking after so well before. The sound to this makes the situation more powerful and tense. The bonging gets loader and loader when we realize what is about to happen. The music makes it sound ok what is happening which makes all the more spooky and tragic. The bonging then stops before the children are about to jump but it turns into a drumming noise like it’s too late. Then the drumming gets very load as the children have fallen. This creates the sense that there is no going back from what’s happened. This builds the tension to the point where the person watching is feeling shocked that this has just happened at

This builds a lot off suspense as does the whole scene. The variety off the different techniques in this scene with the sound sets the film up to be unexpected and very tragic. The different bonging and high pitch screams gives a sense of this by constantly making the audience thinking about what is going to happen in the film. This scene also builds suspense for the whole film to come.
