WOLF3D Version 4 Dealer Tech 7 September 2004 1 Dealer Tech 7. It’s been a long time coming, but here it is. Lots of things have been happening in the months since the last Dealer Tech article. It’s going to take a few Dealer Tech articles to catch up with all of the things that are going on. This issue has a great section on the Wolf PC software Admin Mode, where you can individually load and save calibration tables, compensation tables, and fuel and ignition maps. This adds a whole extra dimension to the PC software. I have talked many of you through this system, but here it is for everyone to read. If you have any questions after reading this, please let me know. We have more Plugin ECUs coming out this year, with several being released as this goes to press, the Nissan S14A 200SX and several Toyota Plugins. If there are specific Plugin ECUs that we do not currently cover, and you think there is a market for these ECUs, please let me know what they are so we can get them in the pipeline and get them to the marketplace as quickly as possible. The connectors look very similar, (both are blue with a fastening bolt in the middle of the connector), so if you are not sure, please count the number of pins on the main blue connector. The Automatic transmission may shift a little harder than it did originally, but many customers like this type of shift pattern. When you order the ECU, it will come as S15. Plugin – Toyota MR2 SW20, Celica ST185, Celica ST205 We have just finished prototyping Toyota MR2 SW20, Celica ST185 and Celica ST205. There are subtle differences between the models, and the only real way to determine which ECU you need, is to open the original ECU and look at the text on the printed circuit board. I will give more details when these ECU’s are in full production. These ECU’s will be available in the next month or so. There are more Plugin ECU’s coming; we will let you know in the next issue what they are.

Plugin – Nissan S14A 200SX The S15 Plugin ECU has been tested on an S14A Automatic. The S14 200SX has a 76 pin connector, whereas the S14A 200SX has a 64 pin connector. Tips – Putting PC Software into Administration Mode You can put the latest version of Wolf3D Version 4 PC software, V4.49 into Admin Mode. This mode allows you to load and save individual calibration tables, and fuel and ignition maps. If you don’t have version 4.49, please download it from our web site on the following link: http://www.wolfems.com.au/products/enginemanagement/wolf3d/version4and4plus/pcsoftware Follow the instructions on the web page to download and install the newest version of the PC Software. You do not have to uninstall the old version that is currently on your PC. The new version of PC Software does not require an unlock code. You can install this version of PC Software on as many PC’s as you like. Admin Mode: Once you have the latest version of the PC software on your PC, find the executable file, W3dv4.exe. You will find it in the folder C:\Program Files\Wolf 3D Version 4. If you cannot locate it in this folder, please search on your computer for W3dv4.exe. Once you have located the file, right click on the icon. A menu will appear. Left click on Create Shortcut

A shortcut icon will appear in the current directory you are using.

Now, right click on the icon Shortcut to W3dv4.exe. A menu will appear.

Left click on Properties. A dialog box will appear. Left click on the Shortcut tab in the dialog box.

In the dialog box where it says Target, the following target location will appear "C:\Program Files\Wolf 3D Version 4\W3dv4.exe". After the last “ type ( -passwd wolfems). To enter this correctly you will need to type (“spacebar” “dash” “passwd wolfems”). It should look as the highlighted text below.

This puts the PC software into admin mode. Using the PC Software in Admin Mode: Once you are in Admin Mode, you can save and load individual calibration tables, and load and save fuel and ignition maps. The files are in CSV (Comma Separated Variable) format. This means you can also use Microsoft Excel to view the files, and make graphs. Without Admin Mode, the PC software menu structure looks like this:

You will find the addition of the Memory menu. Left click on the Memory menu to reveal the dropdown menu. The only functions that we are going to use are, Load Table From CSV file and Save Table to a CSV file. The Memory Fill function is a very powerful function, but is not required by normal uses. The factory can use this function to test ECU memory. The other functions, Erase ECU Firmware and Features are not used at this time. Save Table to a CSV file: Follow this system to save the table to CSV file. Open the PC Software. Either load in the map from an ECU, or open a map file that you have already saved on your PC. For this example, we will use the Engine Temperature Calibration Table. Click on the folder for the Engine Temperature Calibration Table.

Now, go up to the Memory menu and choose “Save Table to CSV file”.

The following dialog box will appear.

Choose the table type as “Current Table”. You can choose individual tables, but pre-choosing the table you require before clicking on the Memory menu will ensure you save the exact table you are after. Choose the file to be Delimited by “Real Values”. Click on the “Save” button to open a dialog box.

Type in the file name that you wish to save the file as. For example “Delco Engine Temp Sensor Cal Table.csv”. You MUST have the “.csv’ after the file name. Load Table From a CSV file: To load a Table from a CSV. Open the PC Software. Either load in the map from an ECU, or open a wmf file that you have already saved on your PC.

Click on the table you wish to load with a previously saved table. For example, the Engine Temperature Sensor Calibration table.

Now, go up to the Memory menu and choose “Load Table From CSV file”.

A dialog box will appear.

A box will appear.

Browse your PC for the file you wish to load into the current table. The file MUST be a “.csv” file. The table will be filled with the new data.

Tips – Max Trigger BTDC Value on 12Cylinder Engine A V12 engine has 60 degrees between each ignition event, which means the maximum Trigger 1 Degrees BTDC must be less than 60 degrees. If the Trigger 1 Degrees BTDC is set greater than 60 degrees, ignition problems will occur, as the ECU will receive the next input trigger before the previous ignition output event can occur. The recommended Trigger 1 Degrees BTDC for a V12 engine is 45 degrees.

Tips – Missing Tooth Input Triggering The Wolf 3D Version 4.61 and later support missing tooth Input Triggering, as is used on such systems as Bosch Motronic engine management systems. This brings the number of special input triggering types to 4.

*We will explore Trigger Ref/Sync Mode 3 in the next Dealer Tech Article. There are 2 main types of Mode 2 triggers, 36-1 and 60-2. You can configure the Wolf3D Version 4 to suit either type, and for different numbers of cylinders. When it comes to triggering, you can think of the missing teeth (SYNC) in the same way as you do the Dual Pulse. It tells the ECU where then crankshaft is in relation to cylinder 1. This makes for a very flexible system, and allows you to set-up the Injection and Ignition configurations as you would if you were using a Dual Pulse crankshaft trigger. 60-1 Crank Triggering The diagram below shows a 60-2 trigger set-up on a 6 cylinder engine. You can see how the missing teeth (SYNC) can be anywhere around the crankshaft in relation to TDC, and the Wolf can determine which teeth the various cylinders correspond to.

The Wolf3D Version 4 can determine that the 2 missing teeth are the SYNC Pulse, then count around the crankshaft to the teeth that it uses for the other cylinders trigger points. These cylinder trigger points are marked in black in the diagram above. Let’s go through the examples above: Crankshaft Sensor Example A – Has 60-2 teeth. Since a 6 Cylinder has 3 trigger events per engine revolution, there needs to be 19 teeth between each of the trigger teeth, so the Ref/Sync Skip value must be set to 19. The missing teeth (SYNC) are right before the tooth closest to 60 BTDC, so the Ref/Sync Offset must be set to 0.

The diagram below represents a 6 Cylinder 60-2 tooth crankshaft sensor configuration.

The Wolf Skips the white teeth and uses the black teeth as its Ref teeth. The Wolf sees the missing teeth as a Sync pulse. The same Sync pulse as with Dual Pulse teeth.

Crankshaft Sensor Example B – Has 60-2 teeth. Since a 6 Cylinder has 3 trigger events per engine revolution, there needs to be 19 teeth between each of the trigger teeth, so the Ref/Sync Skip value must be set to 19. The missing teeth (SYNC) occur 3 teeth before the tooth closest to 60 BTDC, so the Ref/Sync Offset must be set to 3. Crankshaft Sensor Example C – Has 60-2 teeth. Since a 6 Cylinder has 3 trigger events per engine revolution, there needs to be 19 teeth between each of the trigger teeth, so the Ref/Sync Skip value must be set to 19. The missing teeth (SYNC) are several teeth after the tooth closest to 60 BTDC. In fact, the next tooth after the missing SYNC teeth is only 36 BTDC. This would limit the maximum ignition timing delivered by the ECU to 36 Degrees. So the best thing to do, is to is to set the Ref/Sync Offset to 15. This will mean that the 16th tooth after the SYNC be the tooth closest to 60 BTDC. But this will also offset the injection and ignition sequencing by 1, so you must keep that in mind. It is very unlikely that this example will come up, as it is not an efficient way to SYNC the ECU with the crankshaft. Below is a table of 60-2 set-ups for 4, 6 and 8 cylinder missing tooth configurations.

36-1 Crank Triggering 36-1 Crank Triggering uses the same theory as 60-2, except that the teeth are 10 Degrees apart instead of 6 Degrees apart. Below is a table of 36-1 set-ups for 4, 6 and 8 cylinder missing tooth configurations.

As with all engine configuration set-ups, you must turn the power off, then on to the ECU to reset it after you have changed anything in the configuration menus. The Injection and Ignition Sequencing numbers will need to be configured as you would if you had a Dual Pulse tooth where the first REF tooth after the missing tooth SYNC is.

Tips – Ignition Output Sequencing I’ve had a few customers asking for more information on using the PC Software to configure the Ignition Outputs of the Wolf3D Version 4. There are three major adjustable parameters Ignition Offset, Ignition Skip, Ignition Mode. I’ve included some examples for 4 and 6 cylinder engine Ignition Sequencing. Ignition Offset The Ignition Offset is used to set the order in which the ignition outputs fire the ignition coils. 4 Cylinder – There are three main configurations for the ignition system of a 4 cylinder, Distributor, 2 Coils Waste Spark, 4 Coil Sequential Spark.

Distributor – When using a distributor, you need to fire the same ignition channel for every ignition event. Ignition Skip This function is used to determine the number of times a particular ignition output is used on the Wolf3D Version 4 within any input trigger sequence. 4 Cylinder – There are three main configurations for the ignition system of a 4 cylinder, Distributor, 2 Coils Waste Spark, 4 Coil Sequential Spark.

Distributor – When using a distributor, you need to fire the same ignition channel for every ignition event, hence you must set the Skips to 0. 2 Coils, Waste Spark – In this system and a single ignition coil; you will use 2 ignition outputs, and alternate between the two for every ignition event, we achieve this by setting the Skips to 1. 4 Coil Sequential Spark – Using this system, you will use 4 ignition outputs firing the coils once per engine cycle, which means the Skips must be set to 3. 6 Cylinder – There are three main configurations for the ignition system of a 6 cylinder, Distributor, 3 Coils Waste Spark, 6 Coil Sequential Spark.

You can use any one of the ignition outputs. 3 Coils, Waste Spark – In this system, you will use 3 ignition outputs, and alternate between the three for every ignition event. 6 Coil Sequential Spark – Using this system, you will use 6 ignition outputs, and they must be sequenced to follow the engine’s firing order. Ignition Mode For all piston engines, you can leave all of the Ignition Modes to zero (0). Rotary engines are the only engines that need to use Ignition Mode 1. Whichever Ignition Output Mode that you set to 1 will configure the following ignition event to be a trailing ignition event, and it will use the Rotary Trailing Ignition Split value for that trailing ignition event.
