Liberty Pines Academy Families,
School Access Form - In a continuing effort to provide safety and security to our students and staff we ask that you complete a School Access Form if you plan to enter a facility in the St. Johns County School District. This includes if you would like to participate in activities such as classroom celebrations, field trips, book fairs, field days, parent/teacher conferences, etc. Please make sure you complete the school access form online at http://www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/volunteer/. It is important that each member of the family (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.) complete this access form online prior to requesting access into the school. The approval process takes about 2-4 weeks to process.
Make a Mark Award – Congratulations to Ms. Jill Herkel, 7th/8th grade Drama teacher, for receiving this special award honoring a St Johns County teacher that encourages his/her students to make a mark on the world. When teachers invest in their students, they can inspire them to persevere and not give up! A winner is chosen each month from and elementary and a secondary school by students and community business partners. We are proud to have Ms. Herkel at LPA!
Tech Trek – Congratulations to the following rising 8th grade girls who have been selected to attend the American Association of University Women’s (AAUW) Tech Trek Camp this summer. This program is an outstanding weeklong STEM immersion experience sponsored by AAUW.

Jim Harbin Video Awards- Sydnee Vrtikapa and Sarah Berman
Recently, students all over Florida have been participating in the Jim Harbin Video Awards. This is a student media festival in honor of Jim Harbin, a former consultant of the Florida Department of Education. He came up with this idea to showcase Florida’s talented students. Liberty Pines Academy students were assigned their projects in October and finished them in February. Mrs. Martin, our TV Pro teacher, has assigned her classes this project many times in the past. We are so proud of all our students who participated, nice job LPA!

First Grade Egg Hunt
- Kate Olive and Jameson Lee
The first graders recently participated in a Math Egg Hunt. During
this activity the kids had fun and they solved math problems. The
eggs were numbered with numbers 1-10. They needed to find
and solve one of each number, and if they got all them correct
they got a goodie bag. This made learning math fun and
interesting because “you solved for a prize. You got better
without doing it in your head,” –Ashley, a first grader in Mrs.
Herrin’s class.
4th and 5th Grade Glow Party
4th and 5th grade students had a great time at their recent dance on May 3rd! The theme was Glow Party and the students lit up the evening. The students reported to the cafeteria at 3pm and their parents picked them up at 5pm. Students wore everyday clothing. The admission cost was $10 per person. All money raised went to the Character Counts Program. Admission included 2 slices of pizza, chips, and a drink. Thank you to Mrs. Waggoner and Mrs. Cox for planning this spectacular event, and thank you for raising money to go towards character counts!

LPA Spring Carnival- Jordan Anchors and Nidhi Samaluru
This year`s spring carnival was “very fun!” said kindergarten student from Mrs. Grabb’s class, Walker Adams. A student from Mrs. Pate’s third grade class, Logan S., said his favorite part was, “having fun with his friends.” The carnival was held on campus on April 12. PTO raised $16,000 in just three hours! They raised money by selling tickets, and wristbands, which could be used to play games. Room parents provided 31 games for the students and their families. Mrs. Shepard’s class game was the most popular, collecting 430 tickets. They were rewarded with a pizza party last week. In second place was Mrs. Pate’s class with 426 tickets. They were rewarded with a sweet treat. Thank you to all the parents and student volunteers. Special thanks to Mr. John for assisting in set up and breakdown. Mrs. Bell thought this was a great opportunity for students to
learn because “they had fun and they learned math problems, which were hidden inside the eggs.”. The kids learned from this because they got to review all of their math skills from throughout the year.
WOLF NEWSCongratulations to Jill Herkel for receiving the Investing in Kids March “Make A Mark” Award!!! - Anjolee Romero and Hillary Bowker
Liberty Pines’ class of 2019 has tons of fun activities ahead, one of them being our annual Gradventure. Gradventure is a trip where our 8th grade-graduating students get the chance to go to Universal. The busses leave Liberty Pines at 12:30 pm and will arrive back around 2:30am. It is the responsibility of the students to contact their parents when we arrive back. In order to attend Gradventure, all students must be in dress code. Students cannot wear shorts shorter than fingertip length; they must wear the 8th grade tee shirt, no rips in their pants, and students may bring a drawstring bag, but no purses bigger than 8.5”x 5.5”, and we ask that students please wear comfortable shoes. Gradventure is all about students riding rides all night and having fun with their friends. The park will be closed down just for the 8th graders. It’s going to be one awesome adventure!
Upcoming 8th Grade Events
Our graduating 8th graders will also have an opportunity to attend our 8th grade semi-formal dance. The dance will be held May 21st at St. Johns Golf and Country Club from 6:30 pm until 9:00 pm. This year’s theme will be “Glow in the Dark!” We ask that students be dropped off and picked up on time. If a student will be riding home with another parent please let our staff know ahead of time. For girls, we ask that they wear dresses (or other formal outfits worn to the dance) at fingertip length and these must not be low cut. In addition, for boys we ask that they wear dress shirts, dress pants, dress shoes, and absolutely no jeans, shorts, t-shirts, or sneakers. Students MUST attend school the 21st in order to attend the dance that night. We hope that all 8th graders have a blast!
Finally, it is time to say goodbye to our 8th graders, soon to be 9th graders, at our graduation assembly. All parents and family are invited to attend the 8th grade award assembly. The assembly will be held May 23, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at Liberty Pines Academy. We look forward to honoring our 8th grade students as they transition into high school. Students should plan to dress nice, no jeans, and stay in dress code. We are so very proud of the hard work our students have put into this school year, and all past school years. Remember, 8th grade students are not required to attend school the next day, Friday, May 24th. Graduation assembly is the last chance for students to say goodbye to their other graduating friends before high school. Goodbye class of 2019, we will miss you!
In order to attend all these 8th grade events you need to follow some
requirements listed below.
1. The student must have passed all core classes with an average of 60 or
higher.
2. All textbooks and library books must be returned.
3. Students must have shown good moral character throughout the year.
4. Students must not have received a level 3 or higher referral, which is
identified as breaking the student code of conduct.
5. Students must attend their classes Friday, May 17th and Tuesday, May 21st
in order to participate in Gradventure and the 8th grade dance.
Night of the Arts- Lydia Gundaker and Sarah Berman
On Thursday May 2nd, from 6-8 there was an art show held in the main hallway. This featured all art from grades k-5 and art from grades 6-8. There was a special twist called “Art Off the Wall”. This allowed you to take your artwork home that night for a $1 donation. These funds will be donated to the Liberty Pines Academy Art Department. If you did not participate in Art Off the Wall, you will be able to take your artwork home at the end of the year. Select students from NJHS helped. Night of the Arts was super fun and filled with games, a photo booth, prizes, etc. The art was very easy to find and separated by grade and class. We hope you enjoyed supporting LPA’s artists!

Meet the Teacher
- Jordan Anchors and Mina Dryden
We are happy to introduce Mrs. Clark, our new 7th/8th grade math teacher! Mrs. Clark is from Tallahassee and went to Florida State University. She began as a medical salesperson, and then decided that she liked “helping people learn what they needed to succeed in life” and became a teacher. Some of her hobbies include reading, running, hiking, and being
8th Grade Student of the Month
- Kate Olive, and Jameson Lee
LPA’s musical, “Mary Poppins JR.”, was held on April 25th, 26th, and 27th at 6pm, and it was excellent! Mrs. Herkel, Mrs. Hale, Mrs. Hurckes, the cast, and crew worked very hard to put on this wonderful performance.
In the 7th grade drama class, they are working on technical theatre/backstage. The 7th
graders recently put on a puppet show and it was great! They invited almost 100 kindergarteners to come watch the show. In the 8th grade Drama class they are reading “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Advanced drama has been working to support our musical. The have been repairing set pieces, and they helped organizing backstage.
LPA is making an addition to drama! The Drama Department is excited to announce the addition of a technical theatre class next year!
outdoors. Eighth grader Jameson Lee said, “She makes learning fun by having a reward system to inspire students to learn.” We are glad to have such an amazing math teacher on our LPA team, GO WOLVES!
- Kaitlyn Greenwald and Libby Williams
The eighth grade student of the month is Bree Ocampo. Bree’s favorite subject is geometry and she also enjoys playing the piano. Not only that, but Bree enjoys calligraphy. Bree is part of many school activities; she is on the tennis team, Vice President of Student Council, NJHS President, and she was on the Math Counts team. She has 2 siblings and three dogs, that she loves to play with. Mrs. Martin said that she leads by example, always does her work in a timely manner, and is kind and amazing.
7th Grade Student of the Month
Our 7th grade student of the month is Ernesto Espinoza! Ernesto was born on February 24th
in Cuba, and has one sister. He likes spending his time playing soccer, and he enjoys practicing his math skills in class. Ernesto follows all of the pillars daily, and is a great role model for the other students. “He’s very respectful,” Coach Dill recalled, “and he always participates in class. He really works well with others!” Ernesto is also very responsible and follows all of the directions given to him in classes. Congratulations!

CLUB NEWSRelay for Life News
- Kate Olive and Hillary Bowker
The seventh grade Relay for Life team, Relay Rockers, hosted a crazy
sock/hat day. The students had to make a one-dollar donation to wear
these items to school. This was on Wednesday, April 24th. This
occasion benefited the American Cancer Society.
The eighth grade Relay for Life team, CUREbears, participated in the
run/walk on April 27th. They had previously sold flowers, pop sockets,
and scarves. The sale of these items also benefited the American
Cancer Society. The CUREbears sold pop sockets to raise money at the
big event.
NJHS Induction- Nidhi Samaluru and Mina Dryden
The end of the year is coming near, which means new NJHS members. On May 9, in the LPA cafeteria current sixth and seventh graders that were accepted into NJHS will be attending the NJHS Induction. The NJHS Induction will include a ceremony and history of the program. We look forward to all the new NJHS members.
Been A Wolf Since The Start- Nuo Geloshaj
As we prepare to say goodbye to another year of eighth graders, a moment should be taken to appreciate all those who have been in Liberty Pines Academy since kindergarten all the way to 8th grade. To some, LPA has been more than just a school. It has been a place to make friends, have fun, and obviously, a place to learn. But more importantly, it’s been special family of friendly staff and students.
Beau Willim, a K-8th student at LPA said, “My favorite part about this school is the administration because they’ve always been able to lend a helping hand and make sure our school is in order.” Those who have been here since kindergarten have a deep and special connection with the others who have also been here for the longest time. They can all relate to one thing, their LPA family. When you go to the same school with someone for nine years, you get to know them better than anyone.
Because it’s the end of the year, all the 8th graders will move to high school and graduate proudly from LPA with lots of friends. “It will be amazing to move on in life,” Schuyler Thomas another K-8th student said when asked about leaving, “but also sad to leave it behind.” We wish all the 8th graders the best of luck in high school. Good luck wolves!

SPORTS NEWS!!!
Spring Middle School Pep-Rally-Leila Sanchez
Last December, LPA had the fall sports pep-rally and started a new tradition. The middle school teachers and staff got together to make a team and competed against the eighth graders on the boys and girls volleyball teams at the pep-rally. The game was very exciting and many middle school students enjoyed it.
The second semester spring sports pep-rally will be May 20th. This time the pep-rally will be featuring spring sports like baseball and basketball. There will also be another game at the pep-rally. A group of teachers and staff will be playing against our eighth grade basketball players during 5th period. Students, get ready to show some school spirit and support our teams!
Football at LPA
-Samantha Solomon and Hailey Brooks
In preparation for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year, our
newest football team has been hard at work practicing. Our
football wolves practice on the field on Country Road 2209
every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from
4:00pm to 5:45pm. That’s dedication! Coach Solomon, one
of the team’s offensive line coaches, has big expectations for
his team. “I believe that we have a group of great young
men,” he says, “and with what I’ve seen so far this spring,
we’re sure to make it to the playoffs and beyond.” The LPA
football team will have their first game at the end of May.
The roster of the team will be coming soon. We are beyond
proud of our Wolves!
LPA Golf -Kate Olive and Jameson Lee
This year LPA had a new golf coach, Coach Robert
Staninger. This season Coach Staninger has “noticed that
every single player has improved their game quite a bit
since February.” He believes that improving has to “make
everyone feel really good about themselves.” He is “proud
of the conduct of the players and parents as that’s the most
important thing to see and remember in this game.”.
This year’s golf team record is “tee-rific”. They won their
match on April 10th and this is their third victory in a row!
LPA defeated Swiss Point on April 17th. Their most recent
match was held on April 24th, teeing off at 3:05, at St. Johns
Golf and Country Club, against Pacetti Bay B team.

A few students in Mrs. Frank’s class said this was the most memorable field trip they have had yet. Their favorite part was getting to see the stingrays and getting to dig through the sand to find shark teeth. The first graders went to the Alligator Farm on April 25th. They learned about living and non living animals. They also learned about the classification of reptiles and how baby animals look like their parents. They saw lots of alligators and birds; they even saw an albino alligator. Owen Crafts said that the trip was “really fun”. Samantha said her favorite part was “seeing the pretty birds and baby ducks.”

Expansion of LPA-Kaitlyn Greenwald
Beginning in the summer of 2019, LPA will be expanding their building
to replace 20 of the 26 portables. The building they are adding on will
be a two story, 20 classroom building. The building will go where Mrs.
Lamb and Mrs. O’Shell’s classrooms are now, along with where the
softball field is. This will help us turn 20 of our portables into
classrooms. They will start this summer, the summer of 2019 and will
hopefully end by the summer of 2020. Students will see surveyors and
engineers walking around the school preparing for the building. Mrs.
Hemmingway said that everyone is super excited and cannot wait to
see the finished product.
