GENERAL QUESTIONS

What are your current trade offerings? Please provide a brief description of each and an estimate of how long it takes (hours or months, etc.) to complete each trade.

Union TradesCarpentry : Work performed both inside and outdoors. Training consists of residential and commercial construction techniques. Additional training is offered by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) to Job Corps graduates as they work in the UBC apprentice program. Approximately 1000 hours in trade are required for a basic completion.

Cement Masonry : Work is performed primarily outside. Training consists of learning techniques of cement finishing in preparation for an entry level position as a cement apprentice. Completion hours are varied based on each student’s motivation and progress. An advanced training program is available at Turner Job Corps, Albany, Ga.

Completion requires a minimum of 1,000 hours in trade.

Painting: Students will work with on and off Center projects. Work performed both inside and outside. This is a structural painting program - not a sign-painting program. Completion hours are varied based on each student’s motivation and progress.

Umpqua Community College (UCC) Trades (Located at Umpqua Community College – approximately 1 hour from Center.)Automotive: IMPORTANT: This is a technical, college level program. A good writing and reading level is a necessity for acceptance into the program. Students need to be close to or at a reading level associated with a score of 600 on the TABE test or an equivalent skills test. A driver license is preferred prior to beginning the auto training program. A one-year completion certificate is available. For those who want further mastery of this trade, there are two options: another year of specialized experience at UCC or an advanced auto program at Clearfield Job Corps Center in Utah. Toyota hires directly from the two year auto program completers. Positions with other companies are also possible after completion.

Nursing Assistant : IMPORTANT: This is a technical, college level program. Students need to be close to or at a reading level associated with a score of 600 on the TABE test or an equivalent skills test. A good writing and reading level is a necessity for acceptance into the program. A passing score on the Umpqua Community College (UCC) placement test is also required. Students with a reading and math TABE score of 570 or above should make the minimum UCC placement requirements. All students are finger-printed and will have a two background checks (1) prior to acceptance and (2) prior to taking the State CNA test. This trade requires, (in general) that there are no crimes against people. The background check is evaluated against the State of Oregon regulations by the Oregon State Police or by Umpqua Community College Nursing program.

You need to enjoy working with people and feel comfortable performing personal care functions with patients. Your training will prepare you to assist nurses in hospitals and nursing homes, and to take the State of Oregon Certified Nurse Assistant test. Trade completion for the Nursing Assistant is possible in six months to one year. Students successful with the Certified Nurses Assistant test administered by the state become Certified Nurses Assistants (CNA). Additional college training at UCC such as phlebotomy, CNA II, Medical Terminology, First Responders and other related training is also available. These courses provide the foundation to become an LPN or RN.

Non-Union TradesForestry : 1000 hours in trade or the successful completion of 80% of the Training Achievement Record (TAR) for a basic completion. Students must be 18 years old to go out on fire assignments and must also be in good physical condition. The program includes heavy physical training including, weight lifting, long distance running and hiking. Wolf Creek has the only Job Corps Hot Shot Crew in the nation. As such, the program focuses heavily on fire during the fire season. During the rest of the year, the program emphasis switches to other general forestry areas. Culinary Arts : This program takes approximately 6 months for a basic completion and about 1 year for an advanced completion. Students have the opportunity to go to advanced training at Treasure Island Job Corps, San Francisco, California.

Welding : Students learn a wide range of welding processes, blueprint reading, welding symbols, and the math that goes with the welding profession. The average length of time for welding is one year but varies based upon the level of specialization desired and the manual dexterity and commitment of the student.

If you have further questions concerning any of the above trades, Wolf Creek Job Corps recommends you contact the vocational instructor that heads the trade you are interested in. Call 1 (800) 588-9003 and ask for the specific trade instructor.
