RICHARD PHILLIPS
Captain of the shipping vessel Maersk Alabama, hijacked by Somali pirates, Phillips’ story became a movie starring Tom Hanks who was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Captain Phillips.
For five days, during April 2009, Capt. Richard Phillips became the center of an extraordinary international drama, when he was captured by Somali pirates who hijacked his ship, the first American ship hijacked in more than 200 years. His decisive actions to save his crew and the ship led President Obama to recognize him for his courage and concern for his crew, and to state that “his courage is a model for all Americans.”
As the “On-board CEO” in charge of the daily operations of a multimillion dollar ship and her crew, Phillips recalls the dramatic moments of the hijacking and the remarkable rescue in his book A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea.
Based on his own experiences facing and overcoming the most extraordinary challenges, Phillips will share the vital importance of leadership and teamwork, combined with the belief in their power and their potential, along with the work of his crew - even in times in which hope and support seem scarce.
