HOW DO COASTAL LANDFORMS AFFECT THE LIFE'S OF PEOPLE? GCSE – OPTION PAPER - COASTS

description

This is a presentation I have used with my year 11 students who are looking at the impacts of coastal processes and landforms on people. The students also had a handout to go alongside it with some further details about the Holderness Coast and the use of laptops to do their own research.

LESSON OBJECTIVES

CONTENT• IDENTIFY VARIOUS WAYS IN WHICH

COASTAL LANDFORMS AND PROCESSES CAN AFFECT HUMANS BOTH POSITIVELY AND NEGATIVELY.

• EXAMINE THE EFFECTS OF COASTAL EROSION ALONG THE HOLDERNESS COAST.

SKILLS• LITERACY

• MAKE NOTES FROM A SERIES OF VIDEOS ON THE EFFECT OF COASTAL EROSION ON THE HOLDERNESS COAST.

• ANNOTATE A SKETCH MAP TO EXPLAIN HOW COASTAL LANDFORMS AFFECT PEOPLE.

• DRAW A SKETCH MAP USING A VARIETY OF MAPS.

TASK

• CREATE AN ANNOTATED MAP OF THE HOLDERNESS COASTLINE TO EXPLAIN HOW COASTAL LANDFORMS AND PROCESSES AFFECT THE LIFE'S OF PEOPLE.

• YOUR MAP MUST BE HAND DRAWN.

• YOU WILL NEED TO NAME THE LANDFORM/PROCESS AND THEN EXPLAIN HOW IT AFFECTS THE LIFE’S OF PEOPLE.

THE INTRODUCTION

• USING YOUR SPIDER DIAGRAM, CREATE AN INTRODUCTION TO THE CASE STUDY.

• YOU WILL NEED TO INCLUDE:

• WHAT IS TAKING PLACE?

• WHERE IS IT?

• HOW QUICKLY IS THE COASTLINE ERODING?

• WHAT ARE THE OPPORTUNITIES AND CONSTRAINTS THIS CAUSES?

THE MAPCreate a map to show the key features of the Holderness Coast. You will need to include:- Main settlement.- Physical features e.g.

Flamborough Head and Spurn Head.

- The geology of the area.- The direction of the wind

and longshore drift. - The location of the old

coastline.

ANNOTATION

• ANNOTATE YOUR MAPS TO SHOW HOW THE PHYSICAL LANDFORMS OR PROCESSES HAVE AFFECTED HUMAN ACTIVITY IN THE AREA.

• ON THE MINI WHITEBOARDS BRAINSTORM SOME OF THE WAYS COASTAL LANDFORMS HAVE COULD HAVE AFFECTED HUMANS IN THE AREA.
