Welcome to your 23rd World Scout Jamboree experience! We are very glad that you have signed up for an opportunity to change your life forever. The 23rd World Scout Jamboree in 2015
(WSJ15) will enable you to meet friends that will last a lifetime, share in hundreds of cultures at once, while living a life time in 10
days. You will be a part of something so large, so astronomical, that only people that attend World Scout Jamborees will
understand (even though you try to explain over and over again).
Let’s get started on helping you fundraise to get to Japan in 2015! This helpful guide will help you maximize your results.

1. the 3 FundraiSing principleS1. Have Multiple Sources
Review this manual for ideas and make a big list of opportunities. Brainstorm with your family, friends and Scout Group.
Once you have a big list, you can prioritize which activities will get you the most support and make a plan to earn success.
2. Work your Plan Every Day
Set a goal to make contact with one of your sources every day (whether it’s a phone call, a knock on the door, an email,
or another way to ask for support).
3. Work with All Your Teams
You have many people to lean on in Scouting, there’s your family, friends, your Scout Troop or Venturer Company,
and both your Area and your Council, just to name a few. Meet with all of them and ask for their help.
Remember: The more people you tell about your amazing goal, the more support you will receive!
2. FundraiSing FundamentalS at the group/area level - helping you prepare
There are many steps that will get you from beginning to end but the first thing you need to do is prepare.
If there are multiple youth & adults from your Scouting Group, plan a meeting and choose a WSJ15 fundraising chairperson.
This person should have some extra time to put into to planning, looking for opportunities, and following up on leads.
They should also be available to send out meeting times and opportunities to participate in fundraising as they arise.
When meeting for the first time, the group should ask themselves how much they need to fundraise and how much each
individual will be responsible for. Some of your fundraising must be done as a group and split amongst all participants
(where donations come into play, individuals/corporations are not eligible for a tax receipt unless it is for the group
as a whole – see below rules). Scout Popcorn for example, can be done on an individual basis with the amount raised
credited to one person’s goals. Some items to ask yourselves:
• How many individuals from our group will attend WSJ15?
• What happens if we do not make our fundraising goal? Are parents responsible for supporting the youth
that do not reach their fundraising targets?
• Will our Scouting Group support youth/adults to sign up to attend WSJ15?
• For our group based work (door to door pledge gathering, emails seeking support to friends/family),
what happens if someone in our group doesn’t commit to their “fair” share?
• What fundraising does our Scouting Group already do (i.e. Scout Popcorn) and how much can we afford to set aside to support
WSJ15? Do we already have or can we create a major event development fund that captures a percentage of our revenue?
• What do we have the capacity to do? Can we set up a Bottle Drive, E-Waste Recycling Event,
or run an event such as a fundraising dinner (perhaps in conjunction with your sponsor)?
4
3. online Support option With canada helpS giving page To help you reach your fundraising goals, we’re allowing groups who are fundraising for WSJ15, an opportunity to create
an online giving page through CanadaHelps. CanadaHelps is a registered charity that brings donors and charitable organizations
together online to make secure online donations to the charity.
Scouts Canada has a profile on CanadaHelps and will allow those groups that are trying to fundraise for WSJ15, an opportunity
to accept donations (as we receive the funds, we will re-direct them on to the Scouting Group as per our protocol). While
CanadaHelps takes a percentage of fundraising (approximately 5%), they will do the tax receipt and send to the donor, they do
offer group giving pages that are easy to set up,
and they offer you an opportunity to track who
has given and how much. In keeping with the
policies of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA),
tax receipts cannot be given for donations to
individuals. This means that if someone
specifically wants to give to “Jimmy” in your
group for his WSJ15 expenses, this cannot be
tax receipted.
If however, “Jimmy” asks friends and relatives
to support “our group” who is attending WSJ15,
this can be receipted. CRA lists this example:
A charity is opening a music group for youth and
accepting donations for it. A donation comes in
to specifically send a specific child to the music
program; it is ineligible for a tax receipt. If, the
donation comes in for the entire music program
to make the program cheaper for everyone, it is
eligible for a receipt.
This means, when setting up a donation page on Canada Helps, and asking for donations from family and friends, it must be done
on behalf of xx Scouts Canada Group, World Jamboree Fund. We’ve provided instructions to aid you with setting up your Scouting
Group’s page on CanadaHelps.
See example 3.1 on the next page.

4. obtaining door to door pledgeSIn conjunction with your online giving page, set up through Canada Helps, your Scouting Group may find it helpful to collect
pledges door to door using Scouts Canada’s donation form. This form has been set up with Scouts Canada’s Charitable Number on
top to show that you are a legitimate charity. Like other charities, you can collect donations that will support your group in making
its fundraising goal for WSJ15. Just remember a few important things:
a) Ensure that youth along with registered adults (2 per policy) are in full uniform at the door.
b) Ensure you download the World Scout Jamboree ‘leave behind’ page and even if someone chooses not to pledge you,
give them one to keep anyway.
c) Print off a document with the URL of your CanadaHelps page. If someone lets you know that they don’t have cash, allow them
to give a donation online. This will also help people at home to ensure this is a legitimate Scouts Canada project.
d) Let people know that their donation is eligible for a Charitable Tax Receipt if cheques are made out to Scouts Canada, XX Group.
Cash is acceptable. If your group is wishing to issue charitable tax receipts, our process must be followed (process at the end of
this document). Names and addresses on the form must be properly legible and on the appropriate form so that we can issue
receipts. Receipts are eligible for donations over $20.00.
e) Let the youth speak and be as enthusiastic about the experience as possible. Research some of the activities that you will be
participating in at the Jamboree and be knowledgeable about the outcomes of participation.

Subject: Support my Scouting Group for World Jamboree, Japan 2015
Hello Everyone,
Many of you may know that I am getting very excited about my upcoming participation in the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in
Kirara-Hama, Japan in August of 2015. This event is going to be attended by over 30,000 Scouts from across 161 countries.
If any of you have ever participated in an event like this, you will know that it will be the experience of a lifetime. My Jamboree
experience will begin in Hong Kong for the Pre-Jamboree on July 24th, 2015 and from there, we will head to Kirara-hama,
Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan on July 28, 2015 for 11 days of incredible programming and a unique Scouting
cultural exchange that can only be experienced at a World Jamboree. I have heard that the culture observed at a World Scout
Jamboree is second to none and the culture, languages, skill sets and friendships I will make will be with me forever.
For my birthday this year, I hope that you can help to support my Scouting Group to attend WSJ15 by donating online at:
https://www.canadahelps.org/CharityProfilePage.aspx?charityID=s7291.
I know that this experience will be far better than any gift I could ever receive. Donations to my Scouting Group through this
secure online portal are tax deductible and will be sent directly to Scouts Canada. If you have any questions, you can feel free to
contact me, or Scouts Canada directly: 613-224-5134 ext. 298.

5. obtaining Support From Service clubSOne way that your group can obtain support for the World Jamboree is through funding from Service Clubs. There are service
clubs that provide funding to youth programs all over Canada. Below are some links that we think will be helpful in obtaining
funding in your community. Successful support from Service Clubs may come from some of these tips:
a) Write them a letter asking for support (please see example 5.2 on next page).
b) Offer to conduct a presentation with youth and leaders in attendance.
c) Offer to conduct a follow up from the Jamboree experience in the form of a presentation
with photos and stories of the life changing event you participated in.
d) Ask if anyone in the room were previous Scouts and ask them to share their memories of Scouting.
e) Ask them to join in on a popular Scouting song to get people involved from the beginning
and to create warm memories and/or support for the program.
f ) Ensure that you have information to hand out about your experience and come prepared
with statistics of how many are attending, how much the experience will cost, what you will participate in,
how the experience will change lives, and any more information you think is important.

5.2 Example of a letter to Service Clubs
Rotary Club of Peterborough
P.O. Box 172, Peterborough, ON K9J 6Y8
Attention: Gord Retgs
December 17th, 2013
Dear Mr. Retgs;
We are writing to you today to express interest in delivering a presentation to the Rotary Club of Peterborough about the
upcoming World Jamboree taking place in Japan in July & August of 2015. The local Peterborough Scouts could not be more
excited about the opportunity and would like to share with you what the experience will mean to them. As you can likely relate,
many Canadians over the years have been Scouts in their past. It is our guess that many of your local Rotary members have
extremely positive memories about their experiences in the Scouting Movement and would love to hear from our youth as they
share photos, stories and of course, their own experiences in our local Peterborough group.
In Peterborough, there are 5 youth and 4 adults attending the Jamboree. Our Jamboree experience will begin in Hong Kong for
the Pre-Jamboree on July 24th, 2015 and from there, we will join 30,000 participants in Kirara-hama, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi
Prefecture, Japan on July 28, 2015 for 11 days of incredible programming and a unique Scouting cultural exchange that can only
be experienced at a World Jamboree. We have heard that the culture observed at a World Jamboree is second to none and the
culture, languages, skill sets and friendships our youth will make will last forever. This particular Jamboree is set to have youth
from over 161 countries. Our youth are working hard to get to the World Jamboree and have undertaken a multitude of
fundraisers including Scout Popcorn, Bottle Drives and a fundraising dinner. Should you choose to support our program, we
would be extremely grateful.
If we could arrange it, our youth would love the opportunity to talk to you about the experiences we participate in, right here in
Peterborough and, the types of programming we will be sharing in at the World Jamboree. This way, if your local Rotarians have
questions about Scouting or, the World Jamboree in 2015, we can answer them immediately. We would also be very happy to
come out to your group after we return from Japan and share our stories, our photos and our special memories with all of you. We
can assure you that these youth will learn so much from this experience that it is sure to change them for the better.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely;
Scouter George Harwood
6th Peterborough Group Commissioner
(and proud parent of a youth attending the World Scout Jamboree)

6. getting you to the World Jamboree, other tipS and tricKSa) most important: say thanks
After someone has supported you, pick up the phone and say thanks right away. Tell them about your group’s progress to date.
After the culmination of your fundraising efforts, send out a personal thank you card in the mail sharing your final results and
remember to follow up with highlights from the Jamboree, postcards, a daily blog or social media status updates.
b) aim high
Set a target slightly above the minimum amount your group requires. Forget the minimum and aim for that high target! The
power of setting a goal is that it directs your focus. As mentioned previously, plan & brainstorm to develop multiple sources.
c) ask for support instead of money
Support, after all, is what you’re after. Money is just a means of making that happen. Approach your friends and family with that in
mind. Let them know how their money is being put to good work and what it will mean to support you. Offer to send them
postcards and write ups about your experience. Make it special.
d) track and publicize your donations
By letting your friends, family and neighbours know what others have donated; it encourages them
to match or up the level of support.
e) be specific and enthusiastic
It’s best to be specific about what people are donating to. Tell people what your fundraising target is and what their contribution
will help achieve for not only you but to the members of your group. The number one reason people don’t give is because they’re
not asked or not asked directly. Let them know how this experience will benefit you and what it could mean for others.
f) tell everyone about your hard work
Set the example and lead by example! You are not asking for a handout, you are asking for support to help you meet your goal. Tell
them about the fundraisers you are embarking on. Let them know that you are not afraid to work hard. You’ll be surprised what a
difference it makes when your family and friends see how hard you are working to get to the Jamboree; this will likely set an
example for the level of support you receive from others.
g) ask friends and family first
Close friends and family members are likely to give you more support. Additionally, ask those from whom you expect to receive
birthday or holiday gifts to instead contribute money to your fundraising efforts.
10
h) utilize social media
Use Twitter and Facebook. Studies show that participants who use Social Media raise more money than non-users.
Choose to Tweet about your Scouts experiences, Tweet often and always include a link back to your personal fundraising page.
Create a Facebook Status Update; keep your followers updated on the event, your fundraising progress and thanking donors.
Post the URL for your fundraising page in a tweet and encourage your followers to re-tweet their original tweets.
Whenever you update your Facebook status, make sure to include a “donate now” message and your personal URL
(to your fundraising page).
Tell a story. By providing a personal story, you’re sure to connect with people who will want to support you.
Start a blog! They are free through sites like blogger.com or wordpress.org.
i) create a flyer or poster
You can use the same information as you have used for the email updates or social media updates and simply print
and stick them around your local area. This will allow people to see what your Scouting Group is doing and let them know
how they can support you.
j) Family matching
Ask your parents if they are willing to help match fundraising dollars for your group. Let them know about
the odd jobs you will do around the house, ensure you keep your promises.
k) Send an email from your online fundraising page
It is easy and effective. Once your group has completed the registration then invite everyone you know
to donate to you online. Be sure to utilize social media. In addition to sending emails from your fundraising page,
mention your effort in your telephone messages, email signature, notice boards, anywhere you can!
l) remember your personal story
Tell your personal story of how Scouts has positively impacted your life, what you will learn at the Jamboree,
how the experience will impact you.
m) build a contact list
Make a list of all the people you know and ask, ask and ask again for their support.
n) Follow-up (be persistent and positive)
If you haven’t received a response from someone you’ve asked for support, remember to follow up with them.
Pick up the phone or send an email. Give them an update on your progress and be sure they haven’t forgotten.

2015 Japan World Scout Jamboree Organizing Group
c/o Dirk Seis, Organizing Committee Chair
25 January 2014
Dear Involved Community Partner,
Imagine you step off a bus and before you is a sea of tents. Scouts from around the world greet you in their own language. You are
awestruck by the camaraderie you experience amongst the diverse cultures you encounter.
This is the ultimate Scouting event; hosting 40,000 youth from 150 different countries. Over 20 determined Scouts from Simcoe
County are planning to attend the 23rd World Scout Jamboree, from July 28th to August 8th, 2015, in Kirara-hama, Japan.
The Jamboree encompasses wholesome Scouting activities, including camping and nature-based outdoor experiences.
The outstanding programming will facilitate learning about:
Peace. Participation in the 70th Anniversary Peace Memorial Ceremony of Hiroshima.
Global Issues and Disaster Mitigation. Participation in the Global Development Village under the guidance
of United Nations agencies.
Crossroads of Culture. Exchange ideas and learn respect for different cultures.
Science and Technology. Participants will learn of the benefits and problems associated with advances in science,
including the development of fuel cells and other energy sources for the future, ecological problems, and robotics
and automotive technologies.
Community Service. Participants will be able to experience the real Japan by “Reaching Out” and working with local people.
Our Scouts will meet other Scouts from around the world, creating friendships and memories to last a lifetime. These young
people are destined to become our future community leaders. Hear their story at http://youtu.be/WZ_O8GWNFEM.
Through various fundraising activities they have been able to raise some money on their own, but it’s not enough. A charitable
donation will help them get there and realize this dream. A financial gift today would mean a great deal to them, helping offset
the $6,000 personal expense. We invite your support.
For further information or to have a representative come to your organization to discuss the World Scout Jamboree, please
