“I know for sure: Your journey begins with a choice to get up, step out, and live fully. If you think something is missing in your life or you’re not getting what you deserve, remember that there’s no Yellow Brick Road. You lead life; it doesn’t lead you.”

~ Oprah Winfrey

“Home is a place we must all find, child. It’s not just a place where you eat or sleep. Home is knowing. K n o w i n g y o u r m i n d , knowing your heart, knowing your courage. If we know ourselves, we are always home. Anywhere.

~ Glinda the Good

"The Wizard of Oz is a story whose driving force is the inadequacy of adults, even of good adults.  At its beginning, the weaknesses of grown-ups force a child to take control of her own destiny (and her dog's). Thus, ironically, she begins the process of becoming a grown-up herself. The journey from Kansas to Oz is a rite of passage from a world where her guardians are powerless to help her save her dog into a world where the people are her own size, and in which she is never treated as a child, but as a heroine. By the end of her adventure, she certainly grows to fill those shoes - or, rather, those ruby slippers. "Who'd have thought a girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness," laments the Wicked Witch as she melts - an adult becoming smaller than, and giving way to, a child. As the Wicked Witch "grows down", so Dorothy is seen to have grown up.

~ Salman Rushdie, author

Aaaaahs! The Wizard ofWIZARD OF OZ TRIVIA

❉ MGM’s feature film THE WIZARD OF OZ was released just one month before the start of the Second World War.  Dreams of life "over the rainbow" and yearnings of "no place like home" were brutally crushed at the hands of the Nazis and resulted in the deaths of over 50 million souls.

❉ Screen-legend Shirley Temple was MGM’s original choice for the role of Dorothy. The relatively-unknown Frances Ethel Gumm (aka Judy Garland) eventually got the part. Garland was initially outfitted in a blonde wig, and her blue gingham dress was chosen for its blurring effect on her figure, which made her look younger. In Baum’s original story, the slippers were silver, not ruby. The change was made by MGM to enhance the Technicolor delight of the film. ❉ Victor Fleming directed most of the movie, though he did not remain to finish the job; early in 1939 he left to take over another troubled shoot, Gone With The Wind, from the director he replaced on OZ, George Cukor. Gone With the Wind and Victor Fleming both won Academy Awards in 1940.  Fleming holds the achievement of being the only film director to have two films listed in the top 10 of the American Film Institute's prestigious 100 Years...100 Movies list.

❉ The original film was not a box office success, but it has gone on to earn nearly $250 million with its various re-releases. It has inspired numerous prequels, sequels, and adaptations - of the live-action, animated, and Muppet-kind.

❉ While the 1978 Motown-inspired film  The WIZ, starring a young Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, never really captured the magic of the original, it continued to prove just how iconic Dorothy and her journey down the Yellow Brick Road were and continue to be. A Broadway revival is planned for 2016.

❉ The Tony-Award winning sensation WICKED, now in its 12th year on Broadway, has revived an interest in all-things OZ. It is told from the perspective of the witches; its plot begins before and continues after Dorothy's arrival in Oz and includes several references to the 1939 film and Baum's novel.

❉ Andrew Lloyd Webber's West-End revival of the musical allowed the legendary composer to put his own signature spin on the classic story. The show spawned a reality TV series, a North American tour, and gifted us with one of its cast members - the talented Jesse Weafer - who choreographed our show and will be starring in the Mirvish production of the Tony-Award winning musical KINKY BOOTS in Toronto this summer.

❉ Jerry Maren is an American actor and the only confirmed surviving cast member of the 1939 film THE WIZARD OF OZ. At 93, he lives in a retirement home in Los Angeles. He was a member of the Lollypop Guild in Munchkinland.

From the day L. Frank Baum's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz first appeared in 1900, it has captivated audiences around the world. Most of us have seen the iconic 1939 MGM movie so many times that we know the story and songs by heart. For many families, including my own, wiling away the one hour and forty-one minutes in Oz became an annual tradition. The Library of Congress went so far as to identify the  film as the most-viewed motion picture on television syndication and designated it as "culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant."  Why do Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion touch us? Like all great entertainment, the story resonates. It hits home. We see ourselves in the characters and wish we possessed the powers, the brains, the heart, and the courage to make our own dreams come true.

It wasn't until I was in my late teens that I learned that L. Frank Baum and I shared the same birthdate of May 15 (which also happens to be Founder's Day at De La Salle). It seems I was born to be a lifelong friend of Dorothy's.  I often wondered what happened to Dorothy after she left Oz and said goodbye to the friends who helped her find her way home. I never read the original story (or any of its 13 sequels penned by Baum) until I started planning this year's musical. I considered it "research", and what incredible discoveries I made! Some are subtly hinted at in our production. Others will require your imagination. A few are nods to the classic film celebrating its 75th anniversary.

The film's production was notorious for its behind the scenes chaos that inspired its own urban legends. Numerous documentaries and tell-alls have been released over the past 75 years.  Indeed, our own production at Theatre De La Salle has enjoyed its share of back stage drama and creative chaos, with each of our cast and crew members contributing their own unique dose of heart and nerve to this show. I applaud each of them for their dedication to each other and to the entire production.  The true magic of theatre derives from the talent and commitment of each member of the creative team, both on and off-stage.  A show this ambitious takes brains, heart, and courage. I'd like to thank my fellow travellers down our Yellow Brick Road:   Marlene McGroarty - the brains behind our fabulous costumes and the source of calm during our creative brain-’storms’; Marc Labriola - the heart that helped maintain a constant pulse during our rehearsals; Glenn Cherny - the nerve centre of the show that gave us the courage to dream bigger; Jerry McGroarty - a lifelong Del Boy who keeps coming back to prove that "there's no place like home". The following individuals were all wizards in their own right who helped make our Wizard so wonderfully OZ-some: Mr. Lue Tam, Ms. Domingues, and members of the Art Club; our choreographer Jesse Weafer, for his Munchkin master classes;  Nick and Patrick Andison and their team of technical wizards who light up our lives; Emily Milazzo, our choir director; and Jordann Zaza and her band of talented musicians who eased us down the road.

We can't ignore the many individuals who worked their magic behind the curtain:  Brother Domenic, the Board of Directors, and the staff of the Business Office; Mr. Pupo, Mrs. Sibley, and members of the Administration; Teachers, Coaches, Support Staff, and Parent Volunteers. To our generous sponsors, donors, and patrons - thank you very much!  To the parents of our cast and crew - your encouragement, patience, and assistance have not gone unnoticed. And to you - the members of our audience - your applause and laughter make all of our hard work so worthwhile.

It's been quite a journey, and it's always with a certain degree of sadness that we bring the curtain down on another season of Theatre De La Salle.  I'm going to miss the healthy mix of laughter and anxiety that filled our rehearsals.  I'm going to miss the creative energy of the cast, the enthusiasm of our stage managers and crew, and the collaborative spirit of the entire production team. And to the Grade 12 students in our cast, I echo Dorothy's parting words to the Scarecrow: "I'm going to miss you most of all." Many of them were there when our Theatre was revived back in 2011.  Several have had leading roles  in our last three musicals and have contributed their individual dose of charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent to each of our productions. I can only thank them for their dedication to the art of theatre and wish them all the very best as they begin the next exciting chapter down their personal Yellow Brick Roads. You will be missed, but never forgotten. Please come home to visit us!

Tonight, I hope we make each of you feel the magic of being “over the rainbow.”

Enjoy the show!

Message from

Mr. Joseph PupoPrincipal of the Senior School

Over its history, De La Salle College has produced many dramatic productions; since re-privatization, performances of Oliver, The Sound of Music, The Importance of Being Earnest, Inherit the Wind, Joseph

and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Back to the 80’s, and Grease have continued the school’s commitment to the Arts, while providing the school community an opportunity to share in such a meaningful undertaking. This year should be no different as the school celebrates its Twentieth Anniversary of privatization. It is rather fitting that the performers in this year’s The Wizard of Oz are boys and girls from grades five to twelve – the institution of a Junior School and De La Salle becoming co-educational were two key decisions that have impacted the school positively over the last twenty years.

Many volunteers have participated in various aspects of the performance. Whether students are acting, singing, dancing, or participating in the management of the costumes, props, and sets, musical productions provide our students another medium that creates a spirit of community and acknowledges their many gifts. We, as a school community, are proud of their efforts and their dedication. I am confident that The Wizard of Oz will be memorable and fun to watch. Special recognition and appreciation goes to Mr. Michael Luchka. As producer, he has once again organized a successful performance. His efforts, commitment, energy, and passion for the College are commendable.

You’re off to see the Wizard!

Message from

Br. Domenic Viggiani, FSCPresident, De La Salle College “Oaklands”

Dear De La Salle Theatre Patrons:

Some of my earliest recollections of watching television include looking forward to the annual playing of The Wizard of Oz, which was usually aired around Hallowe’en. I still remember how frightened I was of the flying monkeys and the ever-mysterious Wizard. To this day, I enjoy watching one of the classic movies of all-time made in 1939 - the eve of World War II. Of course, the book was written many years before by the novelist Frank Baum.

In many ways, the plot is the classic light versus darkness morality play rendering it more than just a story for children. The author himself was a theosophist and a profoundly religious man. While not a typical Christian work, it does nevertheless offer many religious symbols readily recognizable to Christians. Dorothy, the main character is a humble but determined young girl who seeks her own good but also the good of others. Her name itself means – ‘Love of God’. Her quest to return home reflects the desire of us all to take the journey that leads to the eternal home from whence we began. The journey, which in the novel actually takes forty days, is punctuated with meeting the endearing but flawed companions on the way – the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. Naturally fearful of meeting the Wizard, he gives the little group of pilgrims the task of freeing others from the evil Wicked Witch. After many trials and tribulations, they succeed and are rewarded for their heroism. The allegory is no accident. As a youngster, I always appreciated home more after watching this film. As an adult I am reminded that here we have no permanent home and that along the journey we meet good and evil and our actions help us reach that beautiful place over the rainbow. My gratitude to Mr. Luchka and all those who had any part in producing and performing this enduring and wonderful story.

Message fromMrs. Kim SibleyPrincipal of the Junior School

Thank you very much for your continued support of the Arts program at De La Salle.  The students and teachers have shown tremendous dedication and commitment in preparation of the performances of The Wizard of Oz.  The Junior School students have been excited since they first heard about the show and the opportunity to get involved whether as an actor/actress, stage hand, or volunteer.

Thank you to the enthusiastic teachers Mr. Luchka, Mr. Cherny, Mr. Labriola, Mr. Lue Tam, and Ms. Domingues who have worked tirelessly to ensure that everything comes together for these performances. This is an amazing way for our Junior School students to showcase their talents!

Enjoy the show!
