Mysterious the mechanisms of the mind, heh? So much so that we leave it to scientist to tell us

    how we think....

Strange as that may seem it doesn't take much to de-mystify the occult like presence of thissubstantive - "the mind." How? Imaging and mental processing must be occurring up there,

maybe a metaphor you say? I think so......

The idea or the image in my mind gives rise to the meaning of the words when I speak or to thesentences that I write. False.Take this sentence: "He has in his hand an iphone 5." We feel as if though there is an image

processing in our minds that corresponds with this sentence.

Now if it were possible to simply replace this mental image with a painting, drawing or picturewhat would we stand to lose? Well, let's see.....

At the very end of this commentary I shall leave you with the sentence above the picture. Now,

for the sake of clarity when you look at the picture try to imagine how it would convey the

meaning to the sentence above it.It will immediately dawn on you that it does nothing to give the proposition any life. Where is

this prior connection vis a vis a picture of someone holding an iphone5 and the meaning it's

supposed to convey to the sentence.Soon you will realize that it does nothing for the sentence. The same goes for the mental image

we held in our head. You see, if this picture were to be a good replacement for the mental image

we had in our head then we should be able to see the futility in ascribing the meaning of a word

with an idea in your head. The meaning of the words in this sentence is merely how they are used in the sentence. That is

    all.....

"He has in his hand an iphone 5."Collapse this post

"- The current value for the speed of light (c) is equal to 299,792,458 ms-1.- The speed of lighthas been measured and verified several times over the course of the past 100 years.- In 1865 James Clerk Maxwell published: A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field.

Establishing the value of c by computation.

    - In 1856 Rudolf Kohlrausch and Wilhelm Weber demonstrated the rationn of

electrostatic/magnetic units that matched the value of the then know speed of light (c).- In 1676 Roemer established a reliable value for speed of light (c) by measuring the light

emitted from the moons circling Jupiter.

    - In 1638 Galileo described an experimental method to measure the speed of light by arrangingthat two observers, each having lanterns equipped with shutters, observe each other's lanterns at

    some distance. He failed.

Bottom line: Beliefs can only be justified so far; beyond this one must act. Therefore,

justification does not come to an end in a set of basic beliefs which act as the propositionalfoundations for our knowledge. Justification comes to an end at some point... and this point is

rooted in human activity."Collapse this post

Wittgenstein's "form of life" argument is a limiting case of what we can know about someoneand what that individual can only know about himself and the people surrounding him.

Because of this limiting case, we can only begin to surmise that distinct cultures are trulyseparate spheres of existence that one who stands outside them could never really comprehendunless one resides inside of the individual from that particular culture.

The sights, smells, flavors, gestures, religion, attitudes, values, norms and custom are somehow

intrinsically hardwired into the language and dialect of the culture in question. There is absolutely no way of going around this. It is like a finely woven net made of a particular

fabric or mesh. You cannot separate any threads or fibers without delving into confusion and

    non-sense.

Sure, some will argue that there are programs like "Rosetta Stone" and classes that one can take. How about moving to a country and assimilating within that particular culture? How about that?

Couldn't we assimilate just as well?

Well, I think you could..superficially. However, there is no substitute for the tightly ingrainedtechnique of custom and training that one acquires and forms over the course of decades. Thereis no substitute but to recognize that different perspectives are as real as the forms of life that

construct these learned experiences. We can never really and truly understand how someone

from another culture thinks and feels....Collapse this post

Stop. A lions does not lack conformity with our brains or should I say minds No. Get away from

Atheist and non-believers often tend to conflate superstition with "religious beliefs" draping it'spropositions in a mythological manner. But truth be told, religious belief is never in error since itis not based on fact , but instead on faith.

"instant gratification" junkie. But oh well, that gets old. Not that what I'm going to reflect on wouldn't appear to be old and

more than just what they see in front of them. Searching for deeper insights and the ineffable

offers one an alternative to the traditional mono-theistic discourse of religion. Not that I'm knocking religion or mocking religion, it's just that alternative points of view areroutinely looked upon as irrational and non-mainstream. Well, that's to bad. Einstein once

remarked: "Science without religion is lame, and religion without science is blind." I would like

Sure, much can be made of that commentary but the fact is that I found it important in order todemarcate it's intention between mythology and superstition.Atheist and non-believers often tend to conflate superstition with "religious beliefs" draping it's

propositions in a mythological manner. But truth be told, religious belief is never in error since it

is not based on fact , but instead on faith.Wittgenstein's point was to make note of the fact that it can never be in error unless one purports

to prop its doctrine as a hypothesis. Once this occurs then we have crossed the line and ventured

into the ethereal realm of superstition...."Collapse this postAdd a comment...

"A few more thoughts concerning G.E. Moore's statements concerning "Proof of an External

    World."

According to Wittgenstein Moore's remark "Here is a hand" presupposes that he has knowledgeof this. However, for a skeptic who is in the business of doubting this is what they are waiting

for. For you see, when Moore makes this kind of claim (proposition) he is in effect abstracting a

proposition like this from its everyday use. What use? As in like 1. An anatomy class. 2.Teaching a child through use of ostensive definition by pointing to one's hand as you say the

    word.

Take for example: Last night while watching the Spurs vs. OKC there remained a little over 3

seconds left in the game and OKC was down by five points. I insisted that there was still achance for OKC to make two baskets in this little time. However, my nephew laughed and said:

"Oh come on, that's not logical. It's not gonna happen." I insisted he was wrong and he keptsaying: it's not logical....The point i'm trying to make here is that in this context at home while watching the game the

word "logical" had meaning in the form in which it was being used. Sort of like a framework in

which to hang his ideas. However, if I would have asked him to define "logical" i'm more than

certain it would not be sufficient or he would develop a mental cramp. He might have said: "Itcannot happen is what I meant." That doesn't exactly coincide with the word: "logical."

However, in the context of the situation I knew exactly what he was trying to imply and derived

an artificial like meaning. Taking this word out of the context would cause it to lose meaning.

One more example: Just like if I asked you: "Hey, by the way what time is it?" you might say:"Oh, it's 4:00 pm." If I said: "It felt as if though time stopped." You would know what I meant.

However, if I asked you right after: "What is Time?" you might not be able to respond.

It's because I extracted the word from it's usual context and that is why words like time, logical,

here is a hand, are needed in the construction of our language and there is no point in asserting

knowledge or doubt concerning their meaning because it would make no sense. Other wise if wedisagreed or doubted all of these propositions language would ultimately break down and we

would be no where. Therefore Moore's claim makes no sense to doubt or to ascribe certainty too.

Regardless of the more superfluous tenants of a religious discourse, there is substance therewhen it comes to the belief of the person who practices his or her religion. In my opinion, science and religion are two different spheres that cannot be fused in any manner.

Children should be taught to view the different religions of the world without the emphasis on

Mar 27, 2013- DiscussionIsn't it funny how we quarrel over the superstitious aspects of religion and not as to what it has tooffer the believer. Belief and faith are central to religious doctrines.

Regardless of the more superfluous tenants of a religious discourse, there is substance there

when it comes to the belief of the person who practices his or her religion. In my opinion, science and religion are two different spheres that cannot be fused in any manner.

Children should be taught to view the different religions of the world without the emphasis on

the more superstitious aspects.Arguably, that job seems intractable considering that the more superstitious aspects are fused

with the doctrines of practice and faith. Of course, not all religions are part and parcel of this

    particular type of dogma...
