Mencius asserted that human nature is good and that it can be developed not only by study, as Confucius had taught, but also by a

process of cultivatingones innate (inborn) tendencies.

By this, Mencius meant cultivating our inclination toward compassion for the suffering of others, our disdain for doing what is wrong, and so forth.

Like Confucius, Mencius believed that the Zhou rulers held their position under a doctrine known as the

Mandate of Heaven;Heaven was thought to be the impersonal authority governing all the operations of the universe.

Since the Mandate of Heaven was expressed by the acceptance of a ruler by the people, Mencius stated that if the peoplerose up and overthrew a tyrant,

it was proof that Heaven had withdrawn its mandate. In the name of Heaven, Mencius claimed for the Chinese people the right of rebellion

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirty_Years_WarThe Thirty Years' War (16181648) was a series of wars principally fought inCentral Europe, involving most of the

countries ofEurope.[10]It was one of themost destructive conflictsinEuropean history, and one of the longestcontinuous wars in modern history.

Initially, religion was a motivation for war asProtestant and Catholic states battled it

out even though they all were inside theHoly Roman Empire.

Changing the relative balance of power within the Empire was at issue. Gradually, it developed into a more generalconflict involving most of the great powers of Europe.[11]In this general phase, the war became less specifically religiousand more a continuation of theBourbonHabsburg rivalryfor European political pre-eminence, leading in turn to further

warfare betweenFranceand theHabsburgpowers.[12]A major consequence of the Thirty Years' War was the devastation of entire regions, denuded by the foraging armies(bellum se ipsum alet). Famine and disease significantly decreased the population of the German states,Bohemia, the

Low Countries, and Italy; most of the combatant powers were bankrupted. While the regiments within each army were notstrictlymercenary,in that they were not units for hire that changed sides from battle to battle, some individual soldiers

that made up the regiments were mercenaries. The problem of discipline was made more difficult by the ad hocnatureof 17th-century military financing; armies were expected to be largely self-funding by means of loot taken

Popular sovereignty or the sovereignty of the people is

the beliefthat the legitimacy of thestateis created by the will orconsent of its people, who are the source of allpolitical

power. It is closely associated to thesocial contractphilosophers, among whom areThomas Hobbes,JohnLockeandJean-Jacques Rousseau.Popular sovereignty expresses a concept and does not necessarily reflect or

describe a political reality.[1]It is often contrasted with the concept ofparliamentary sovereignty, and withindividual sovereignty.

Democracy is a form of government in which all citizens have an equal sayin the decisions that affect their lives.

Ideally, this includes equal (and more or less direct) participation in the

proposal, development and passage of legislation into law.It can also encompass social, economic and cultural conditions that enable the free and equal practice ofpolitical self-determination.The term comes from theGreek: (dmokrata) "rule of the

people",[1]which was coined from (dmos) "people" and (Kratos) "power", in the middle of the

    508 BC.[2]

According to some theories of democracy, popular sovereigntyis the founding principle of such a system.[3]However,

the democratic principle has also been expressed as "the freedom to call something into being which did not

exist before, which was not given and which therefore, strictly speaking, could not be known."[4]This type of freedom, which is connected to human "natality," or the capacity to begin anew, sees democracy as

"not only a political system [but] an

ideal,an aspiration, really, intimately connected to and

dependent upon a picture of what it is to be humanof what it is a human should be to be fully human."[5]

Year 13 (XIII)was acommon year starting on Sunday(link will display the full calendar) of theJuliancalendar. At the time, it was known as the Year of theConsulshipofSiliusandPlancus(or, less frequently, year

766Ab urbe condita). The denomination 13 for this year has been used since the earlymedieval period, whentheAnno Dominicalendar erabecame the prevalent method in Europe for naming years.

3114 BCAccording to the most widely accepted correlations between the Western calendar and the calendarsystems ofpre-ColumbianMesoamerica,the mythical starting point of theMesoamerican Long Count

calendarcycle occurs in this year.[2]The Long Count calendar, used and refined most notably by theMayacivilizationbut also attested in some other (earlier) Mesoamerican cultures, consisted of a series of interlockedcycles or periods of day-counts, which mapped out a linear sequence of days from a notional starting point. Thesystem originated sometime in the Mid- to Late Preclassic period ofMesoamerican chronology, during the latterhalf of the 1st millennium BC.[3]The starting point of the most commonly used highest-order cycle[4]theb'ak'tun-cycle consisting of thirteen b'ak'tuns of 144,000 days eachwas projected back to an earlier, mythical date. This date is equivalent to 11 August 3114 BC in theproleptic Gregorian calendar(or 6September in theproleptic Julian calendar), using the correlation known as the "Goodman-Martnez-Thompson(GMT) correlation". The GMT-correlation is worked out with the Long Count starting date equivalent to

supported, with the 13th(JDN = 584285, the "astronomical"or "Lounsbury" correlation) attractingsignificant support as according better with astronomical observational data.[5]Although it is still contendedwhich of these three dates forms the actual starting base of the Long Count, the correlation to one of this triad ofdates is definitively accepted by almost all contemporary Mayanists. All other earlier or later correlation

proposals are now discounted.[1]The end of the thirteenthbaktun was either on December 21 or 23 of 2012

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_rule

The Doomsday ruleor Doomsday algorithm is a way ofcalculating the day of the weekof a given date. Itprovides aperpetual calendarsince theGregorian calendarmoves in cycles of 400 years.

Thisalgorithmformental calculationwas devised byJohn Conway[1][2]after drawing inspiration fromLewis

Carroll'swork on a perpetual calendar algorithm.[3][4]It takes advantage of the fact that each year has acertain day of the week (the doomsday) upon which certain easy-to-remember dates fall; for example, 4/4, 6/6,8/8, 10/10, 12/12, and the last day of February all occur on the same day of the week in any given year.Applying the Doomsday algorithm involves three steps:

Determine the "anchor day"for the century.Use the anchor day for the century to calculate the doomsday for the year.Choose the closest date out of the ones that always fall on the doomsday (e.g. 4/4, 6/6, 8/8), and count thenumber of days (modulo 7)between that date and the date in question to arrive at the day of the week. This technique applies to both theGregorian calendarA.D.and theJulian calendar, although their doomsdayswill usually be different days of the week.Since this algorithm involves treating days of the week like numbers modulo 7,John Conwaysuggests thinking

of the days of the week as "Noneday"or "Sansday" (for Sunday), "Oneday", "Twosday", "Treblesday","Foursday", "Fiveday", and "Six-a-day".The algorithm is simple enough for anyone with basic arithmetic ability to do the calculations mentally.Conway can usually give the correct answer in under two seconds. To improve his speed, he practices his

calendrical calculations on his computer, which is programmed to quiz him with random dates every time helogs on.[5]

Humpty appears inLewis Carroll'sThrough the Looking-Glass(1872), where hediscussessemanticsandpragmaticswithAlice.

I dont know what you mean by glory, Alice said.Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. Of course you donttill I tell you. I meant theres a nice knock-down argument for you!But glory doesnt mean a nice knock-down argument, Alice objected.WhenI use a word, Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, it means just what I choose it to me anneither more nor less. The question is, said Alice, whether youcan make words mean so many different things. The question is, said Humpty Dumpty, which is to be master thats all.Alice was too much puzzled to say anything, so after a minute Humpty Dumpty began again. Theyve atemper, some of themparticularly verbs, theyre the proudestadjectives you can do anything with, but notverbshowever, I can manage the whole lot! Impenetrability! Thats whatI say![15]

Triskaidekaphobia (fromGreektris meaning "3", kai meaning "and", deka meaning "10"and phobos meaning "fear" or "morbid fear") isfearof the number13and avoidance to use it; it isasuperstitionand related to a specific fear ofFriday the 13th,calledparaskevidekatriaphobia (fromParaskevi, Greek for Friday) or friggatriskaidekaphobia (afterFrigg, the Norse goddess Friday isnamed after in English). The term was first used byIsador Coriatin Abnormal Psychology.[1]

    Origins[edit]

There is a myththat the earliest reference to thirteen being unlucky or evil is from the BabylonianCode ofHammurabi(circa 1780 BCE), where the thirteenth law is omitted. In fact, the original Code of Hammurabi

has no numeration. The translation by L.W. King (1910), edited by Richard Hooker, omittedone article:

If the sellerhave gone to (his) fate (i. e., have died), the purchaser shall recover damagesin said

case fivefold from the estate of the seller.Other translations of the Code of Hammurabi, for example the translation by Robert Francis Harper, include the

13th article.[2]Some Christian traditions have it that at theLast Supper,Judas, thedisciplewho betrayedJesus, was the 13th tosit at the table.[3]However, the Bible itself says nothing about the order at which the Apostles sat. Also, the

number 13 is not uniformly badin theJudeo-Christiantradition. For example, the attributes of God (alsocalled theThirteen Attributes of Mercy)are enumerated in the Torah (Exodus34:67). Some modern Christian

churches also use 13 attributes of God in sermons.

Triskaidekaphobia may have also affected theVikings:It is believed thatLokiwas the 13th godin the Norse

pantheonmore specifically, Loki was believed to have engineered the murder ofBalderand was the 13th

guest to arrive at the funeral.[4]This is perhaps related to the superstition that if 13 people gather, one ofthem will die in the following year. Another Norse tradition involves the myth ofNorna-Gest:When the

uninvitednornsshowed up at his birthday celebration (thus increasing the number of guests from ten to

thirteen), they cursed the infant by magically binding his lifespan to that of a mystic candle they presented tohim.

Similarly, in theGrimm'sversion ofSleeping Beauty, the wicked fairy is the thirteenth fairy.Ancient Persiansbelieved the twelve constellations in theZodiaccontrolled the months of the year, and eachruled the earth for a thousand years, at the end of which the sky and earth collapsed in chaos. Therefore, thenumber is identified with chaos and the reason Persians leave their houses to avoid bad luck on the thirteenthday of thePersian Calendar,a tradition calledSizdah Bedar.Events related to unlucky 13[edit]

Thirteen Club.At the first meeting, on Friday, January 13, 1881, at 8:13 p.m., thirteen people sat down to dinein Room 13 of the venue. The guests walked under a ladder to enter the room and were seated among piles ofspilled salt. Many Thirteen Clubs sprang up all over North America for the next 40 years. Their activities wereregularly reported in leading newspapers, and their numbers included five future US presidents, fromChester AArthurtoTheodore Roosevelt.Thirteen Clubs had various imitators, but they all gradually faded frominterest.[6]TheApollo 13lunar mission was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded.

Vehicle registration plates in the Republic of Irelandare such that the first two digits represent the year ofregistration of the vehicle (i.e., 11 is a 2011 registered car, 12 is 2012, and so on). In 2012, there were concernsamong members of theSociety of the Irish Motor Industry(SIMI) that the prospect of having "13" registeredvehicles might discourage motorists from buying new cars due to superstition surrounding the number thirteen, and that car sales and the motor industry (which was already ailing) would suffer as a result. The government,in consultation with SIMI, introduced a system whereby 2013 registered vehicles would have their registrationplates age identifier string modified to read "131" for vehicles registered in the first six months of 2013 and"132" for those registered in the latter six months of the year.[7]The main reason for this however, is toincrease the number of car sales in the latter months of the year. Even though 70% of new cars are boughtduring the first four months of the year, some consumers believe that it doesn't accurately reflect the real age ofa new car, since cars bought in January will most likely have been manufactured the previous year, while thosebought later in the year will be actually made in the same year.[8]This system continued after 2013, withvehicles registered in the first half of 2014 labelled "141" rather than "14".Similar phobias[edit]

For example, 13 is lucky inItalyexcept in some contexts, such as sitting at the dinner table.[11]Colgate Universitywas started by 13 men with $13 and 13 prayers, so 13

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/13_(number)#Lucky_13Strikingly similar folkloric aspects of the number 13 have been noted in various cultures around the world: onetheory is that this is due to the cultures employing lunar-solar calendars (there are approximately 12.41lunations per solar year, and hence 12 "true months" plus a smaller, and often portentous, thirteenth month). This can be witnessed, for example, in the "Twelve Days of Christmas" of Western European tradition.[1]

In mathematics[edit]The number 13 is the sixthprime number, and the smallestemirp(a prime that is a different prime whenreversed).[2]It is also aFibonacci number, ahappy number, the thirdcentered square number, and one of only3 knownWilson primes.Since 52 + 122 = 132, (5, 12, 13) forms aPythagorean triple. There are 13Archimedean solids, and astandard toruscan be sliced into 13 pieces with just 3 planecuts.[2]There are also 13 different ways for the three fastest horses in ahorse raceto finish, allowing for ties, a

fact that can be expressed mathematically by 13 being the thirdordered Bell number.[3]

The poem borrows occasionally from Carroll's short poem "Jabberwocky" inThrough the Looking-Glass(especially the poem's creatures andportmanteau words), but it is a stand-alone work, first published in1876byMacmillan.The illustrations were byHenry Holiday.

In common with other Carroll works, the meaning of his poems has been queried and analysed in depth. One ofthe most comprehensive[3]gatherings of information about the poem and its meaning is The Annotated SnarkbyMartin Gardner.

Bellman Bonnet Maker Barrister Broker Billiard-Marker Banker Butcher Baker Beaver

After crossing the sea guided by the Bellman's map of theOceana blank sheet of paperthe hunting partyarrive in a strange land. The Baker recalls that his uncle once warned him that, though catching Snarks is allwell and good, you must be careful; for, if yourSnarkis a Boojum, then you will softly and suddenly vanishaway, and never be met with again. With this in mind, they split up to hunt. Along the way, the Butcher and

Beaver -previously mutually wary for the Butcher's specialty in preparing beavers- become fast friends, theBarrister falls asleep and dreams of a court trial defended by the Snark, and the Banker loses his sanity afterbeing attacked by a frumiousBandersnatch. At the end, the Baker calls out that he has found a Snark; but whenthe others arrive he has mysteriously disappeared,[4]'For the Snark was a Boojum, you see'.

Even more than in most nonsense poetry, inadequacy of language, meaning, and symbol is a recurring theme inSnark. Examples include the blank map, the Bellman's contradictory navigational orders, the Baker's name-lossand failure to settle on one replacement-name, his failing to mention his luggage, his attempt to communicate inthe wrong languages, the Banker's absurd offer to protect the Beaver from being butchered by insuring it againstfire and hail, the Butcher's self-nullifying arithmetical manipulations, the Court officers' unwillingness to fulfiltheir lawful obligations, the Banker's ridiculous attempt to bribe a predatory beast with money, and hissubsequentaphasia.[5]

It is disputed whether Carroll had a young audience in mind when he wrote the Snark. The ballad, like almostall of the poems in the Alice books, has no young protagonists, is rather dark, and does not end happily. Inaddition to the disappearance of the Baker, the Banker's loss of sanity is described in detail. Similarly,HenryHoliday'sillustrationsfor the original edition are caricatures with disproportionate heads and unpleasantfeatures, very different fromTenniel's illustrations of Alice.

"Jabberwocky" is anonsense versepoem written byLewis Carrollin his 1872 novelThrough the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There, asequeltoAlice's Adventures in Wonderland. The book tells ofAlice'sadventures within theback-to-front worldof alooking glass.

In a scene in which she is in conversation with the chess piecesWhite KingandWhite Queen,Alice finds abook written in a seemingly unintelligible language. Realising that she is travelling through an inverted world, she recognises that the verse on the pages are written inmirror-writing.She holds a mirror to one of the poems, and reads the reflected verse of "Jabberwocky". She finds the nonsense verse as puzzling as the odd land shehas walked into, later revealed as a dreamscape.[1]"Jabberwocky" is considered one of the greatest nonsense poems written in English.[2][3]Its playful, whimsicallanguage has given usnonsense wordsandneologismssuch as "galumphing" and "chortle".

The concept of nonsense verse was not new to Carroll who would have known ofchapbookssuch as The WorldTurned Upside Down and stories such as "The Great Panjundrum". Nonsense existed inShakespeare's work andwas well-known in thebrothers Grimm's fairytales, some of which are called lying tales or lgenmarchen.[6]Roger Lancelyn Greensuggests that "Jabberwocky" is a parody of the old German ballad "The Shepherd of theGiant Mountains"in which a shepherd kills agriffinthat is attacking his sheep.[7][8][9]The ballad had beentranslated into English in blank verse by Lewis Carroll's cousinMenella Bute Smedleyin 1846, many yearsbefore the appearance of the Alice books.[8][10]Historian Sean B. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_GodTheCatechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)teaches that the coming Reign of God will be a kingdom of love,

peace, and justice.[23]Justice is defined as a virtue whereby one respects the rights of all persons, living in harmony and equity with

    all.[24]

    Good Friday!!

The Kingdom of God began with Christ's death and Resurrection and must be further extended by Christiansuntil it has been brought into perfection by Christ at the end of time.

[25]The Christian does this by living the way Christ lived, by thinking the way Christ thought,[23]and bypromoting peace and justice.[26]This can be accomplished by discerning how the Holy Spirit (God) is calling

one to act in the concrete circumstances of one's life.[26]Christians must also pray, asking God for what is necessary to cooperate with the coming of God's Kingdom.

[27]Jesus gathered disciples to be the seed and the beginning of God's Reign on earth, and Jesus sent the HolySpirit to guide them.[28]Jesus continues to call all people to come together around him[29]and to spread the

Kingdom of God across the entire world.[30]However, the ultimate triumph of Christ's Kingdom will not come about until Christ's return to earth at the end

of time.[31]During Christ's second coming, he will judge the living and the dead.

Only those who are judged to be righteous and just will reign with Christ forever.[32]Christ's second comingwill also mark the absolute defeat of all evil powers, including Satan.[33]

Until then, the coming of the Kingdom will continue to be attacked by evil powers as Christians wait with hopefor the second coming of their Savior.[34]

This is why Christians pray to hasten Christ's return by saying to him "Maranatha!" which means "Come, LordJesus!".[35]

Mount Sinai and the Ten CommandmentsMain article:Ten Commandments

According to theBible, after crossing the Red Sea and leading theIsraelitestowards the desert, Moses wassummoned by God toMount Sinai, also referred to asMount Horeb, the same place where Moses had first

talked to theBurning Bush, tended the flocks ofJethrohis father-in-law, and later produced water by striking

the rock with hisstaffand directed the battle with theAmalekites.Moses stayed on the mountain for 40 days and nights, a period in which he received the Ten Commandmentsdirectly from God. Moses then descended from the mountain with intent to deliver the commandments to the

people, but upon his arrival he saw that the people were involved in the sin of theGolden Calf.

In terrible anger, Moses broke the commandmenttablets[30]and ordered his own tribe (theLevites)to

go through the camp and kill everyone, including family and friends,[31]upon which the Leviteskilled about 3,000 people.[32]God later commanded Moses to inscribe two other tablets, to replace the ones

Moses smashed,[33]so Moses went to the mountain again, for another period of 40 days and nights, and whenhe returned, the commandments were finally given.

In Jewish tradition, Moses is referred to as "The Lawgiver" for this singular achievement of

    delivering the Ten Commandments.
