General

1 General

1.1 IntroductionThank you for choosing an Invacare product.

This user manual contains important information about the handlingof the product. In order to ensure safety when using the product,read the user manual carefully and follow the safety instructions.

Please note that there may be sections in this user manual, which arenot relevant to your product, since this manual applies to all existingmodules (on the date of printing).

If you find that the font size in the print version of the user manualis difficult to read, you can download it as a pdf from the Invacarewebsite (see back page of this manual). The pdf can then be scaled onscreen to a font size that is more comfortable for you.

This mobility device has been constructed for a large circle of userswith different requirements.

The decision whether the model is suitable for the user may only betaken by medical specialists with appropriate expertise.

Invacare or their statutory representatives can accept no liability incases in which the mobility device has not been adapted to suit theusers’ handicaps.

Some maintenance and settings can be performed by the useror his/hers attendants. Certain adjustments do however requiretechnical training and may only be carried out by your Invacarespecialist dealer. Refer to the Inspection checks chapter in 8Maintenance, page 47. Damages and errors caused by nonobservanceof the user manual or as a result of incorrect maintenance areexcluded from all guarantees.

1.2 Symbols in this manualIn this manual warnings are indicated by symbols. The warningsymbols are accompanied by a heading that indicates the severityof the danger.

1.3 Type classificationThis vehicle has been classified according to EN 12184 as a class Amobility product. This means it is a compact, manoeuvrable vehicle

mainly for internal use and not necessarily capable of negotiatingoutdoor obstacles.

1.4 Intended useThis mobility device was designed for persons whose ability to walkis impaired, but who are still in terms of their eyesight and physicallyand mentally able to operate an electric mobility device.

1.5 RegulationsThe vehicle was successfully tested according to German andinternational standards as to its safety. It satisfies the requirementsaccording to RoHS 2011/65/EU, REACH 1907/2006/EC and DINEN 12184 including EN 1021-1/-2. It was also tested successfullyaccording to EN 60529 IPX4 as to its resistance to spray water,and is therefore well suited for weather conditions such as typicalEuropean weather conditions.

1.6 IndicationsThe use of this power wheelchair is recommended for the followingindications:

• The inability or a greatly restricted ability to walk within thescope of the basic requirement to be able to move within one’sown four walls.

Provision of power wheelchairs for interior areas is advisable if theuse of manual wheelchairs is no longer possible on account of thedisability, yet proper operation of an electromotive drive unit is stillpracticable.

Contraindications

There are no contraindications known.

1.7 UsabilityOnly use a mobility device when it is in perfect working order.Otherwise, you might put yourself and others at risk.

The following list does not claim to be exhaustive. It is only intendedto show some of the situations that could affect the usability of yourmobility device.

In certain situations, you should immediately stop using your mobilitydevice. Other situations allow you to use the mobility device to getto your dealer.

You should immediately stop using your mobilitydevice if its usability is restricted due to:• brake failure

You should immediately contact an authorizedInvacare dealer if the usability of your mobility deviceis restricted due to:• the lighting system (if fitted) failing or being defective• reflectors falling off• worn thread or insufficient tire pressure• damage to the armrests (e.g. torn armrest padding)• damage to the legrest hangers (e.g. missing or torn heel straps)• damage to the postural belt• damage to the joystick (joystick cannot be moved into the

neutral position)• cables that are damaged, kinked, pinched or have come loose

from the fixation• the mobility device drifting when braking• the mobility device pulling to one side when moving• unusual sounds developing or occurring

Or if you have the feeling that something is wrong with your mobilitydevice.

1.8 WarrantyThe terms and conditions of the warranty are part of the generalterms and conditions particular to the individual countries in whichthis product is sold.

1.9 Service lifeWe estimate a service life of five years for this product, provided itis used in strict accordance with the intended use as set out in thisdocument and all maintenance and service requirements are met.The estimated service life can be exceeded if the product is carefullyused and properly maintained, and provided technical and scientificadvances do not result in technical limitations. The service life canalso be considerably reduced by extreme or incorrect usage. The factthat we estimate a service life for this product does not constitute anadditional warranty.

1.10 A note to mobility device assistantsWhen assistance to the mobility device user is required, rememberto use good body mechanics. Keep your back straight and bend yourknees whenever tilting the mobility device or traversing curbs orother impediments.

Also, be aware of detachable parts such as armrests or legrests.These must NEVER be used to move the mobility device or as liftingsupports, as they may be inadvertently released, resulting in possibleinjury to the user and/or assistant(s).

When learning a new assistance technique, have an experiencedassistant help you before attempting it alone.

2 Safety

2.1 General safety notes

WARNING!Risk of injury if mobility device is used in anyother way than the purpose described in thismanual– Only ever use the mobility device in accordance withthe instructions in this user manual.

– Pay strict attention to the safety information.

WARNING!Risk of injury if the mobility device is drivenwhen ability to operate a vehicle is impaired bymedication or alcohol– Never drive the mobility device under the influenceof medication or alcohol. If necessary, the mobilitydevice must be operated by an attendant who isphysically and mentally able.

WARNING!Risk of damage or injury if mobility device isaccidentally set into motion– Switch the mobility device off before you get in, getout or handle unwieldy objects.

– When the drive is disengaged, the brake inside thedrive is deactivated. For this reason, pushing themobility device by an attendant is only recommendedon flat surfaces, never on gradients. Never leaveyour mobility device on a gradient with its motorsdisengaged. Always re-engage the motors immediatelyafter pushing the mobility device (refer to Pushing themobility device in freewheel mode).

WARNING!Risk of injury if the mobility device is switched offwhile driving, for example by pressing the On/OffButton or disconnecting a cable, due to it comingto an abrupt, sharp stop– If you have to brake in an emergency, simply releasethe joystick which will bring you to a halt (refer to theremote user manual for more information).

WARNING!Risk of injury when transferring mobility deviceto a vehicle for transport with the occupantseated in it– It is always better to transfer the mobility device to avehicle without the occupant seated in it.

– If the mobility device needs to be loaded up a ramptogether with its driver, ensure that the ramp doesnot exceed the maximum safe slope (refer to 11Technical data, page 61).

– If the mobility device does need to be loaded using aramp which exceeds the maximum safe slope (referto 11 Technical data, page 61), then you must use awinch. An attendant can safely monitor and assist theloading process.

– As an alternative you can use a platform lift. Ensurethat the total weight of the mobility device includingthe user does not exceed the maximum permissibleweight for the platform lift or winch if you are using.

WARNING!Risk of falling out of the mobility device– Do not slide forward on the seat, do not lean forwardbetween your knees, do not lean backwards outover the top of the backrest, for example to reachan object.

– If a posture belt is installed, it should be correctlyadjusted and used each time you use the mobilitydevice.

– When transferring to a different seat, position themobility device as close as possible to the new seat.

CAUTION!Risk of injury if maximum permissible load isexceeded– Do not exceed the maximum permissible load (referto 11 Technical data, page 61).

– The mobility device is only designed for use by a singleoccupant whose maximum weight does not exceedthe maximum permissible load of the device. Neveruse the mobility device to transport more than oneperson.

CAUTION!Risk of injury due to wrong lifting or dropping ofheavy components– When maintaining, servicing or lifting any part of yourmobility device, take into account the weight of theindividual components especially the batteries. Besure at all times to adopt the correct lifting postureand ask for assistance if necessary.

CAUTION!Risk of injury by moving parts– Make sure that no injury is incurred by moving partsof the mobility device, like wheels or one of thelifter modules (if fitted), especially when children arearound.

CAUTION!Risk of injury from hot surfaces– Do not leave the mobility device in direct sunlight forprolonged periods. Metal parts and surfaces such asthe seat and armrests can become very hot.

CAUTION!Risk of fire or breaking down due to electricdevices being connected– Do not connect any electric devices to your mobilitydevice that are not expressly certified by Invacare forthis purpose. Have all electrical installations done byyour authorized Invacare dealer.

2.2 Safety information on the electrical system

DANGER!Risk of death, serious injury, or damageMisuse of the wheelchair may cause the wheelchair tostart smoking, sparking, or burning. Death, seriousinjury, or damage may occur due to fire.– DO NOT use the wheelchair other than its intendedpurpose.

– If the wheelchair starts smoking, sparking, or burning,discontinue using the wheelchair and seek serviceIMMEDIATELY.

DANGER!Risk of fireSwitched on lamps produce heat. If you cover the lampswith fabrics such as clothes, there is a risk that the fabricmay catch fire.– NEVER cover the light system with fabric.

DANGER!Risk of death, serious injury, or damageCorroded electrical components due to water or liquidexposure can result in death, serious injury, or damage.– Minimize exposure of electrical components to waterand/or liquids.

– Electrical components damaged by corrosion MUSTbe replaced immediately.

– Wheelchairs that are frequently exposed towater/liquids may require replacement of electricalcomponents more frequently.

DANGER!Risk of death or serious injuryFailure to observe these warnings can cause an electricalshort resulting in death, serious injury, or damage tothe electrical system.– The POSITIVE (+) RED battery cable MUST connectto the POSITIVE (+) battery terminal(s)/post(s). TheNEGATIVE (-) BLACK battery cable MUST connectto the NEGATIVE (-) battery terminal(s)/post(s).

– NEVER allow any of your tools and/or battery cable(s)to contact BOTH battery post(s) at the same time.An electrical short may occur and serious injury ordamage may occur.

– Install protective caps on positive and negative batteryterminals.

– Replace cable(s) immediately if cable(s) insulationbecomes damaged.

– DO NOT remove fuse or mounting hardware fromPOSITIVE (+) red battery cable mounting screw.

DANGER!Risk of death or serious injuryElectric shock can cause death or serious injury– To avoid electric shock, inspect plug and cord forcuts and/or frayed wires. Replace cut cords or frayedwires immediately.

Risk of damage to the wheelchairA failure in the electric system can lead to unusualbehavior such as continuous light, no light, or noisesfrom the magnetic brakes.– If a failure exists, switch off the remote and switchit on again.

– If a failure still exists, then disconnect or remove thepower source. Depending on the mobility devicemodel, you can either remove the battery packs ordisconnect the batteries from the power module. If indoubt which cable to disconnect, contact your dealer.

– In any case, contact your dealer.

2.3 Safety information on electromagneticinterferenceThis electric vehicle was successfully tested in accordance withInternational standards as to its compliance with ElectromagneticInterference (EMI) regulations. However, electromagnetic fields,such as those generated by radio and television transmitters, andcellular phones can influence the functions of electric vehicles. Also,the electronics used in our vehicles can generate a low level ofelectromagnetic interference, which however will remain within thetolerance permitted by law. For these reasons we ask you to pleaseobserve the following precautions:

WARNING!Risk of malfunction due to electromagneticinterference– Do not switch on or operate portable transceivers orcommunication devices (such as radio transceivers orcellular phones) when the vehicle is switched on.

– Avoid getting near strong radio and televisiontransmitters.

– In case the vehicle should be set in motionunintentionally or the brakes are released, switch itoff immediately.

– Adding electrical accessories and other componentsor modifying the vehicle in any way can make itsusceptible to electromagnetic interference. Keep inmind that there is no sure way to determine the effectsuch modifications will have on the overall immunityof the electronic system.

– Report all occurrences of unintentional movement ofthe vehicle, or release of the electric brakes to themanufacturer.

2.4 Safety information on driving and freewheelmode

DANGER!Risk of death, serious injury, or damageMalfunctioning joystick could cause unintended/erraticmovement resulting in death, serious injury, or damage– If unintended/erratic movement occurs, stop usingthe wheelchair immediately and contact a qualifiedtechnician.

WARNING!Risk of injury if the mobility device tips over– Inclines and declines can only be travelled up to themaximum safe slope (refer to 11 Technical data, page61).

– Always return the backrest of your seat or the seattilt to an upright position before ascending slopes.We recommend that you position the seat backrestand the seat tilt (if fitted) slightly to the rear beforedescending slopes.

– Only ever drive downhill at a maximum of 2/3 of thetop speed. Avoid abrupt braking or accelerating ongradients.

– If at all possible, avoid driving on wet, slippery, icy, oroily surfaces (such as snow, gravel, ice etc.) wherethere is a risk of you losing control over the vehicle,especially on a gradient. This may include certainpainted or otherwise treated wood surfaces. If drivingon such a surface is inevitable, then always drive slowlyand with the utmost caution.

– Never attempt to overcome an obstacle when on anuphill or downhill gradient.

– Never attempt to drive up or down a flight of stepswith your mobility device.

– When overcoming obstacles, always observe themaximum obstacle height (refer to 11 Technical data,page 61 and information about overcoming obstaclesin 6.6 Taking Obstacles, page 38).

– Avoid shifting your center of gravity as well as abruptjoystick movements and changes of direction whenthe mobility device is in motion.

2.7 Safety information on wheelchairs with alifter

WARNING!Risk of injury by moving parts– Never let objects get caught in the space underneath araised lifter.

– Make sure that neither you nor anyone else is injuredby placing hands, feet other body extremities underthe raised seat.

– Should you not be able to view under the seat, forexample, due to limited manoeuvrability, turn thewheelchair once on its own axel before you lower theseat. This will allow you to make sure that nobody islocated in the danger zone.

CAUTION!Risk of injury if the wheelchair tips over– Never exceed the maximum permissible load (seechapter 11 Technical data, page 61).

– Avoid dangerous driving situations when the lifter is ina raised position, such as trying to overcome obstacleslike kerbs or driving up or down steep gradients.

– Never lean out of the seat when the lifter is raised.– Inspect the lifter module at least once a month tomake sure the automatic speed reduction function,which reduces the speed of the wheelchair when thelifter is raised, is working properly (see chapter 3.3The Lifter, page 19). Notify your authorised dealershipimmediately if it is not working properly.

CAUTION!Risk of malfunction of the lifter module– Inspect the lifter module at regular intervals to makesure there are no foreign objects or visible damage,and to make sure the electric plugs are firmly insertedinto their sockets.

CAUTION!Damage to wheelchair caused by one-sidedloading on lifter pillar– One-sided loading occurs if the seat is raised and/ortilted. Always return your seat backrest to the uprightposition and the seat tilting to the horizontal positionbefore ascending slopes. Never subject the lifter pillarto continuous single-sided loading. Important information regarding speed reductionwith raised lifter– If the lifter has been raised above a certain point, thedrive electronics considerably reduces the speed ofthe wheelchair. If speed reduction has been activated,drive mode can only be used to carry out minormovements of the wheelchair and not for regulardriving. 3.2 RemotesYour mobility device may be fitted with one of several differentremotes. For information on the different functions and how tooperate a particular remote, refer to its corresponding user manual(enclosed).

3.3 The LifterThe electric lifter is operated from the remote. Refer to the remotemanual for more information.

Information regarding operation of the lifter attemperatures of less than 0 °C– Invacare mobility aids are fitted with safety mechanismsthat prevent capacity overload of the electroniccomponents. At operating temperatures belowfreezing point this can, in particular, lead to the lifteractuator being shut down after approx. 1 secondoperating time.

– The lifter can be raised or lowered gradually byrepeatedly operating the joystick. In many cases thisgenerates sufficient heat for the actuator to operateas normal.

NOTE - speed limiter– The lifter is fitted with sensors which reduce themobility device speed as soon as the lifter is raisedabove a certain point.

– This takes place to guarantee the tipping stability of themobility device and to avoid damage to the legrests.

– If the speed limit is activated, a corresponding blinkcode is displayed on the remote or a reduced drivelevel is set automatically. Please refer to the remotemanual for more information.

– To reapply normal speed, run the lifter down until thestatus display stops blinking.

4 Accessories

4.1 Postural beltsA postural belt is an option which can either be fixed to the mobilitydevice ex-works or can be retrofitted by your specialist dealer. Ifyour mobility device is fitted with a postural belt, your specialistdealer will have informed you about fitting and usage.

The postural belt is used to help the mobility device user keep anoptimum sitting position. Correct use of the belt assists the userin sitting securely, comfortably and well-positioned in the mobilitydevice, especially for such users who do not have such a good senseof balance while sitting.

We recommend using the postural belt whenever themobility device is used. The belt should be tight enough toensure that you are sitting comfortably and that your body isin the correct sitting position.

4.1.1 Types of postural beltsYour mobility device can be fitted with the following postural belttypes ex-works. If your mobility device has been fitted with a differentbelt to those listed below, please ensure that you have received themanufacturer's documentation with regard to correct fitting and use.

Belt with metal buckle, adjustable one side

Belt can only be adjusted on one side which can result in the bucklenot sitting centrally.

4.1.2 Adjusting the postural belt correctly

1. Ensure that you are sitting correctly, which means that you aresitting right at the back of the seat, your pelvis is positioned erectand as symmetrically as possible, not to the front, to the side orat one edge of the seat.

2. Position the postural belt so that your hipbones can be easilyfelt above the belt.

3. Adjust the belt length using one of the adjustment aids describedabove. The belt should be adjusted so that you can fit a flat handbetween the belt and your body.

4. The buckle should be positioned as centrally as possible. In doingso, carry out adjustments on both sides as much as possible.

5. Check your belt every week to ensure that it is still in goodworking condition, to ensure it has no damage or wear, andthat it is fixed properly to the mobility device. If the beltis only fastened with a bolted connection, ensure that theconnection has not loosened or come undone. You can findmore information about maintenance work on belts in theservice manual, which is available from Invacare.

5 Adjusting the mobility device to theuser's seating posture

5.1 General information on adjusting themobility device to the user's seating posture

– After the mobility device has been set-up/adjusted,check to make sure that the mobility device performsto the specifications entered during the set-upprocedure. If the mobility device does not performto specifications, IMMEDIATELY turn the mobilitydevice Off and re-enter set-up specifications. ContactInvacare, if mobility device still does not perform tocorrect specifications.

5.2 Adjustment possibility for remoteThe following information is valid for all seating systems.

CAUTION!Risk of the remote being pushed backwardsduring an accidental collision with an obstacle,such as a doorframe or table, and the joystickbeing jammed against the armpad if the positionof the remote is adjusted and all screws are notcompletely tightenedThis will cause the mobility device to drive forwarduncontrollably and potentially injure the mobility deviceuser and any person standing in the way.– When adjusting the position of the remote, alwaysmake sure to tighten all screws securely.

– If this should accidentally happen, immediately switchthe mobility device electronics OFF at the remote.

CAUTION!Risk of injuryWhen leaning on the remote, for example, whentransferring into or out of the wheelchair, the remoteholder may break and the user may fall out of the chair.– Never lean on the remote as a support for, forexample, transfer.

5.2.1 Adjusting the remote for the length of theuser's arm

5.3.2 Adjusting the armrest angle

1. Lift up the armrest.2. Loosen the jam nut A.3. Adjust the socket screw B up or down to the desired arm angle

position.4. Tighten the jam nut.5. To determine the same angle for the opposite armrest, count

the exposed threads after the jam nut has been tightened.6. Repeat STEPS 1-4 for opposite armrest, if necessary.

CAUTION!Risk of injuryWhen you adjust the backrest angle without securingthe backrest, the backrest snaps forward very fast. Thiscan pinch your fingers on the armrest or strike yourback, when sitting in the seat.– Never adjust the angle of an unsecured backrest.While pulling the release handle, hold up against thebackrest to secure it.

5.4 Center-mounted footboard

WARNING!After any adjustments, repair or service andbefore use, make sure that all attaching hardwareis tightened securely - otherwise injury or damagemay result.– Before performing any maintenance, adjustment orservice verify that on/off switch on the joystick is inthe off position.

– DO NOT stand on the flip-up footboard. Whengetting in or out of the wheelchair, make sure that theflip-up footboard is in the upward position.

WARNING!Limited clearance between footboard and caster– The user’s feet MUST remain centered on thefootboard, away from the footboard sides, whileoperating the wheelchair. If the user’s feet are allowedto rest off the side of the footboard they may come incontact with the caster possibly resulting in injury.

5.4.2 Adjusting the footboard assembly angle

Tools:• 5/32” Allen Key• 1/2” socket wrench

1. Loosen the jam nut and set screw A located underneath on thebackside of the footboard B.

2. Adjust the set screw in or out to obtain the desired footboardassembly angle.

3. Thread the jam nut and washer inward until it is flush with thefootboard bracket.

4. Securely tighten the jam nut and washer to secure the mountingscrew in place.

5.4.3 Adjusting the footboard assembly depth

WARNING!Make sure the detent balls of the quick-releasepin are fully released beyond the outer edge ofthe tube before operating the mobility device.Otherwise, injury and/or damage may result.– Keep detent balls clean.

5.5 Vari-A legrests

5.5.1 Swivelling the footrest/legrest outward and/orremoving

The small unlocking button is located on the upper section of thefootrest/legrest. When the footrest/legrest is unlocked, it can beswivelled inward or outward when getting into the wheelchair aswell as being removed completely.

1. Press the unlocking button (1) and swivel the footrest/legrestoutward.

2. Remove the footrest/legrest in an upward direction.

5.5.2 Setting the angle

6 Usage

6.1 DrivingThe maximum load capacity that is stated in the technicaldata only states that the system is designed for this massin total. However, this does not mean that one can sita person with this body weight in the mobility devicewithout restrictions. Attention must be paid to the bodyproportions, such as height, weight distribution, abdominalbelt, leg and calf strap and seat depth. These factors havea strong influence on driving features such as tilt stabilityand traction. The permissible axle loads in particular mustbe adhered to (refer to 11 Technical data, page 61). It maypossibly be necessary to carry out adaptations to the seatsystem.

6.2 Before driving for the first timeBefore you take your first trip, you should familiarize yourself wellwith the operation of the mobility device and with all operatingelements. Take your time to test all functions and driving modes.

If installed, make sure to properly adjust and use the posturalbelt each time you use the mobility device.

Sitting comfortably = Driving safely

Before each trip, make sure that:

• You are within easy reach of all operating controls.• The battery charge is sufficient for the distance intended to be

covered.• The postural belt (if installed) is in perfect order.

• The rear mirror (if installed) is adjusted so you can look behindat all times without having to bend forward or shift your seatingposition.

6.3 Reaching, Leaning and Bending - Forward

Many activities require the wheelchair user to reach, bend andtransfer in and out of the wheelchair. 6.6.1 The ”SureStep“ SystemThis mobility device is fitted with "SureStep" technology. Whenclimbing over obstacles, the casters retract and raise. They extendand lower when descending.

6.6.3 Safety information when taking obstacles

CAUTION!Risk of tipping over– Never approach obstacles at an angle but at 90degrees as shown below.

– Approach obstacles with a gradient after it withcaution. If unsure whether the gradient is too steepor not, move away from the obstacle and if possibletry to find another location.

– Never approach obstacles at an uneven and/or looseground.

– Never drive with too low tire pressure. For therecommended tire pressure, refer to 11 Technicaldata, page 61.

– Put your backrest into an upright position beforeascending an obstacle.

6.6.4 The correct way to overcome obstacles

1. Approach the obstacle or the curb slowly, head-on and at aright angle.

2. Depending on the wheel drive type, stop in one of the followingpositions:

a. In the case of centrally driven mobility devices: 5 - 10 cmbefore the obstacle.

b. For all other drives: approx. 30 - 50 cm in front of theobstacle.

3. Check the position of the front wheels. They must be in drivingdirection and at right angles to the obstacle.

4. Approach slowly and keep at a consistent speed until the rearwheels have also passed over the obstacle.

Descending

The approach to descend an obstacle is the same as to ascend it withthe difference that you need not to stop before descending.

1. Descend the obstacle with medium speed.

When descending an obstacle too slowly it could happenthat the antitippers get stuck and lift the drive wheelsoff the ground. A driving of the mobility device is thenno longer possible.

Ascending obstacles with a curb climber

1. Approach the obstacle or the curb slowly, head-on and at aright angle.

2. Stop in the following position: 30 – 50 cm in front of the obstacle.3. Check the position of the front wheels. They must be in driving

direction and at right angles to the obstacle.4. Approach with full speed until the curb climber makes contact

with the obstacle. The impetus will lift both front wheels overthe obstacle.

5. Keep at a consistent speed until the rear wheels have also passedover the obstacle.

6.7 Driving up and down gradientsFor information concerning the maximum safe slope, refer to 11Technical data, page 61.

CAUTION!Risk of tipping over– Only ever drive downhill at a maximum of 2/3 of thetop speed. Avoid sudden changes of direction orabrupt braking when driving on slopes.

– Always return the backrest of your seat or the seat tilt(if adjustable seat tilt is available) to an upright positionbefore ascending slopes. We recommend that youposition the seat backrest or the seat tilt slightly tothe rear before descending slopes.

– Always lower the lifter (if fitted) to its lowest positionbefore ascending or descending a slope.

– Never attempt to ascend or descend a slope onslippery surfaces or where there is a risk of skidding(such as wet pavement, ice etc).

– Avoid trying to get out of the vehicle on an inclineor a gradient.

– Always drive straight in the direction the road or pathyou are on goes, rather than attempting to zigzag.

– Never attempt to turn around on an incline or a slope.

CAUTION!Braking distance is much longer on a downhillslope than on even terrain– Never drive down a slope that exceeds the maximumsafe slope (refer to 11 Technical data, page 61).

6.8 Use on public roadsIf you wish to use your mobility device on public roads and lighting isrequired by national legislation, then your mobility device needs tobe fitted with an appropriate lighting system.

Contact your Invacare dealer if you have any questions.

6.9 Pushing the mobility device in freewheelmodeThe motors of the mobility device are equipped with automaticbrakes, preventing that the mobility device starts rolling out ofcontrol when the remote is switched off. When pushing the mobilitydevice manually whilst freewheeling, the magnetic brakes must bedisengaged.

Pushing the mobility device by hand may require morephysical force than expected (more than 100 N). Thenecessary force nevertheless complies with the requirementsof ISO 7176-14.

6.10 Disengaging motors

CAUTION!Risk of the mobility device running away– When the motors are disengaged (for push operationwhilst freewheeling), the electromagnetic motorbrakes are deactivated. When the mobility device isparked, the levers for engaging and disengaging themotors must without fail be locked firmly into the"DRIVE" position (electromagnetic motor brakesactivated).

The motors may only be disengaged by an attendant, notby the user.

This ensures that the motors are only disengaged if anattendant is available to secure the mobility device andprevent unintended rolling.

The levers for disengaging the motors are located on each motor.

7 Electrical system

7.1 Electronics protection systemThe vehicle drive electronics is fitted with an overload protection.

If the drive is severely overloaded over a long period (for example,during steep climbs) and, above all, at simultaneous high externaltemperatures, the electronic system can overheat. In this case,the vehicle performance is gradually reduced until it comes to astandstill. The status display shows a corresponding flash code (pleaserefer to the user manual for your remote). If you switch the driveelectronics off and then on again, the error message is deleted andthe electronics can be switched on again. It can however take up tofive minutes until the electronics has cooled down enough for thedrives to apply their full performance.

If the drive is blocked due to an insurmountable obstacle, forexample, a curb or similar which is too high, and the driver attemptsto run the drive for more than 20 seconds against this obstacle, theelectronic system switches the drives off to avoid damage. The statusdisplay shows a corresponding flash code (please refer to the usermanual for your remote). If you switch the drive electronics off andthen on again, the error message is deleted and the electronics canbe switched on again.

A defective main fuse may be replaced only after checkingthe entire electric system. An specialized Invacare dealermust perform the replacement. You can find information onthe fuse type in 11 Technical data, page 61.

7.2 BatteriesPower is supplied by two 12 V batteries. The batteries aremaintenance-free and only need regular charging.

In the following, you find information on how to charge, handle,transport, store, maintain, and use batteries.

7.2.1 General information on chargingNew batteries should always be fully charged once before their firstuse. New batteries will be at their full capacity after having runthrough approx. 10 - 20 charging cycles (break-in period). Thisbreak-in period is necessary to fully activate the battery for maximumperformance and longevity. Thus, range and running time of yourmobility device could initially increase with use.

Gel/AGM lead acid batteries do not have a memory effect as NiCdbatteries.

7.2.2 General instructions on chargingFollow the instructions listed below to ensure safe use and longevityof the batteries:

• Charge 18 hours prior to initial usage.• We recommend charging the batteries daily after every

discharge even after partly discharge, as well as each night overnight. Depending on the level of discharge, it can take up to 12hours until the batteries are fully charged again.

• When the battery indicator reached the red LED range, chargethe batteries for 16 hours minimum, neglecting the chargecomplete display!

• Try to provide a 24 hour charge once a week to make sure thatboth batteries are fully charged.

• Do not cycle your batteries at a low state of charge withoutregularly recharging them fully.

• Do not charge your batteries under extreme temperatures.High temperatures above 30 °C are not recommended forcharging as well as low temperatures below 10 °C.

• Use only charging devices in Class 2. This class of chargers maybe left unattended during charging. All charging devices whichare supplied by Invacare comply with these requirements.

• You cannot overcharge the batteries when using the chargersupplied with your mobility device, or a charger that has beenapproved by Invacare.

• Protect your charger from sources of heat such as heatersand direct sunlight. If the battery charger overheats, chargingcurrent will be reduced and the charging process delayed.

7.2.3 How to charge the batteriesRefer to the user manuals for your remote and battery charger forthe position of the charging socket and further information aboutcharging the batteries.

WARNING!Risk of explosion and destruction of batteries ifthe wrong battery charger is used– Only ever use the battery charger supplied with yourmobility device, or a charger that has been approvedby Invacare.

WARNING!Risk of electric shock and damage to the batterycharger if it gets wet– Protect the battery charger from water.– Always charge in a dry environment.

WARNING!Risk of short circuit and electric shock if thebattery charger has been damaged– Do not use the battery charger if it has been droppedor damaged.

WARNING!Risk of electric shock and damage to the batteries– NEVER attempt to recharge the batteries by attachingcables directly to the battery terminals.

WARNING!Risk of fire and electric shock if a damagedextension cable is used– Only ever use an extension cable if it is absolutelynecessary. In case you must use one, make sure itis in good condition.

WARNING!Risk of injury if using the mobility device duringcharging– DO NOT attempt to recharge the batteries andoperate the mobility device at the same time.

– DO NOT sit in the mobility device while charging thebatteries.

1. Switch off the mobility device.2. Connect the battery charger to the charger socket.3. Connect the battery charger to the power supply.

7.2.4 How to disconnect the batteries after charging

1. Once charging is complete, first disconnect the battery chargerfrom the power supply, then disconnect the plug from theremote.

7.2.5 Storage and MaintenanceFollow the instructions listed below to ensure safe use and longevityof the batteries:

• Always store the batteries fully charged.1590425-A 43


• Do not leave the batteries in a low state of charge for anextended length of time. Charge a discharged battery as soonas possible.

• In case your mobility device is not used for a longer periodof time (that is more than two weeks), the batteries must becharged at least once a month to maintain a full charge andalways be charged before use.

• Avoid hot and cold extremes when storing. We recommend tostore batteries at a temperature of 15 °C.

• Gel and AGM batteries are maintenance-free. Any performanceissues should be handled by a properly trained mobility devicetechnician.

7.2.6 Instructions on using the batteries

CAUTION!Risk of damaging the batteries.– Avoid ultra-deep discharges and never drain yourbatteries completely.

• Pay attention to the Battery Charge Indicator! Charge thebatteries when the Battery Charge Indicator shows that batterycharge is low.How fast the batteries discharge depends on manycircumstances, such as ambient temperature, condition of thesurface of the road, tire pressure, weight of the driver, way ofdriving and utilisation of lighting, if fitted.

• Try to charge the batteries always before you reach the red LEDrange.The last 3 LED (two red and one orange) mean a remainingcapacity of about 15 %.

• Driving with flashing red LED’s means an extreme stress for thebattery and should be avoided under normal circumstances.

• When only one red LED is flashing, the Battery Safe featureis enabled. From this time, speed and acceleration is reduceddrastically. It will allow you to move the mobility device slowlyout of a dangerous situation before the electronic finally cuts off.This is deep discharging and should be avoided.

• Be aware that for temperatures below 20 °C, the nominalbattery capacity starts to decline. For example, at -10 °Cthe capacity is reduced to about 50 % of the nominal batterycapacity.

• To avoid damaging the batteries, never allow them to be fullydischarged. Do not drive on heavily discharged batteries if it isnot absolutely necessary, as this will strain the batteries undulyand shorten their life expectancy.

• The earlier you recharge the batteries, the longer they live.• The depth of discharge affects the cycle life. The harder a

battery has to work, the shorter is its life expectancy.Examples:– One deep discharge stresses the same as 6 normal cycles(green /orange display off).

– The battery life is about 300 cycles at 80 % discharge (first 7LED off), or about 3000 cycles at 10 % discharge (one LEDoff).

The number of LED can vary depending on theremote type.

• Under normal operation, once a month the battery should bedischarged until all green and orange LED are off. This should bedone within one day. A 16 hour charge afterwards is necessaryas reconditioning.

7.2.7 Transporting batteriesThe batteries supplied with your mobility device are not hazardousgoods. This classification is based on the German GGVS HazardousGoods Road Transport Ordinances, and the IATA/DGR Hazardous

Goods Rail Transport / Air Transport Ordinances. Batteries may betransported without restrictions, whether by road, rail or by air.Individual transport companies have, however, guidelines which canpossibly restrict or forbid certain transport procedures. Please askthe transport company regarding each individual case.

7.2.8 General instructions on handling the batteries• Never mix and match different battery manufactures or

technologies, or use batteries that do not have similar datecodes.

• Never mix gel with AGM batteries.• The batteries reach their end of life when the drive range is

significantly smaller than usual. Contact your dealer or servicetechnician for details.

• Always have your batteries installed by a properly trainedmobility device technician or a person with adequate knowledge.They have the necessary training and tools to do the job safelyand correctly.

7.2.9 How to handle damaged batteries correctly

CAUTION!Corrosion and burns from acid leakage ifbatteries are damaged– Remove clothes that have been soiled by acidimmediately.

After contact with skin:– Immediately wash affected area with lots of water.

After contact with eyes:– Immediately rinse eyes under running water forseveral minutes; consult a physician.

• Always wear safety goggles and appropriate safety clothing whenhandling damaged batteries.

• Place damaged batteries in an acid-resistant receptacleimmediately after removing them.

• Only ever transport damaged batteries in an appropriateacid-resistant receptacle.

• Wash all objects that have come into contact with acid withlots of water.

Disposing of dead or damaged batteries correctly

Dead or damaged batteries can be given back to your dealer ordirectly to Invacare.

7.2.10 Use the correct batteries

8.1 Maintenance introductionThe term “Maintenance“ means any task performed to ensure thata medical device is in good working order and ready for use asintended. Maintenance encompasses different areas, such as everydaycare and cleaning, inspection checks, repair tasks and refurbishment.

Have your vehicle checked once a year by an authorisedInvacare dealer in order to maintain its driving safety androadworthiness.

8.2 Cleaning the mobility deviceWhen cleaning the mobility device, pay attention to the followingpoints:

• Only use a damp cloth and gentle detergent.• Do not use any abrasive or scouring agents.• Do not subject the electronic components to any direct contact

with water.• Do not use any high-pressure cleaning devices.

Disinfection

Spray or wipe disinfection using a tested and recognised product ispermitted. A list of the current permitted disinfectants is availablefrom the Robert Koch Institute at http://www.rki.de.

8.3 Inspection checksThe following table lists inspection checks that should be performedby the user and their intervals. If the mobility device fails to pass oneof the inspection checks, refer to the chapter indicated or contactyour authorised Invacare dealer. A more comprehensive list ofinspection checks and instructions for maintenance work can be

found in the service manual for this device, which can be obtainedfrom Invacare. That manual, however, is intended to be used bytrained and authorized service technicians, and describes tasks whichare not intended to be performed by the user.

8.4.2 Repairing flat tires

CAUTION!Risk of explosionThe wheel explodes if the air pressure has not beenreleased from the wheel before the wheel rim isremoved.– Always let all the air out of the tire before removingthe rim.

1. Remove the drive wheel. Refer to 8.4.1 Removing/Installing thedrive wheel, page 50.

2. Let the air escape completely out of the tire by pressing the pinin the centre of the valve firmly in.

3. Remove the four mounting screws A, locknuts G and washersF.

4. Remove the wheel rim halves B and D from the wheel C.5. Remove the inner tube from the wheel.

6. Repair the inner tube and re-fit it, or replace it with a new one.

If the old inner tube has been repaired and is to beused again, and became wet during repair, it is easierto replace it if it is lightly dusted with talcum powderbeforehand.

Installation takes place in reverse order. Always ensurethat the wheel is replaced on the same side and in the samedirection as it was removed.

7. Apply the wheel rim halves to the wheel again.

When installing the outer rim into a pneumatic tireensure the valve stem of the inner tube protrudesthrough the stem opening in the outer rim.

8. Insert the hub E into the inner rim D and align the fourmounting holes of the hub and the wheel rim halves.Ensure that the inner tube is not clamped between the wheelrim halves.

9. Ensure that the tire is contacting the wheel rim directly.10. Secure the outer rim to the inner rim and hub with the mounting

screws, washers and locknuts.Tighten the locknuts with 20 Nm (± 10 %).

11. Inflate the tire to the recommended pressure. Refer to theTechnical specifications in the User Manual.

12. Ensure that the tire is still closely contacting the wheel rim.13. Install the drive wheel. Refer to 8.4.1 Removing/Installing the

drive wheel, page 50.

8.5 Short term storageIn case a serious fault is detected, a number of safety mechanisms arebuilt into your mobility device and will protect it.

The controller prevents your mobility device from driving.

Maintenance

When the mobility device is in such a condition and while waitingfor repair:

1. Switch off power.2. Disconnect the power module.

Refer to the corresponding chapter about disconnecting thepower module.

3. Contact your dealer.

8.6 Long-term storageIn case your mobility device is not used for a longer period of time,you need to prepare it for storage to ensure a longer life for yourmobility device and batteries.

Storing mobility device and batteries

• We recommend to store the mobility device at a temperatureof 15° C, avoid hot and cold extremes when storing to ensure along service life of the product and batteries.

• The components are tested and approved for greatertemperature ranges as detailed below:– Allowable temperature range to store the mobility device is-40° up to 65° C.

– Allowable temperature range to store batteries is -25° upto 65° C.

• Even not being used, batteries discharge themselves. Bestpractice is to disconnect the battery supply from the powermodule if storing the mobility device longer than two weeks.Depending on the mobility device model, you can either removethe battery packs or disconnect the batteries from the powermodule. Refer to the corresponding chapter about disconnectingthe batteries. If in doubt which cable to disconnect, contactyour dealer.

• Batteries should always be fully charged before storing.

• If storing the mobility device longer than four weeks, check thebatteries once a month and recharge as needed (before gaugereads half full) to avoid damage.

• Store in a dry, well-ventilated environment protected fromouter influences.

• Slightly overinflate pneumatic tires.• Position the mobility device on flooring that is not discolored by

contact with tire rubber.

Preparing mobility device for use

• Re-connect the battery supply to the power module.• The batteries must be charged before use.• Have the mobility device checked by an authorized Invacare

dealer.

9 Transport

9.1 Transport - General information

WARNING!Risk of severe or fatal injuries in the event of atraffic accident if this mobility device is used as avehicle seat! It does not fulfill the requirementsof ISO 7176-19.– Under no circumstances should this mobility devicebe used as a vehicle seat or to transport the user ina vehicle.

WARNING!Risk of death or serious injury to the mobilitydevice user and potentially any other nearbyoccupant of the vehicle, if a mobility deviceis secured using a 4-point tie-down systemavailable from a third party supplier and theunladen weight of the mobility device exceedsthe maximum weight for which the tie-downsystem is certified.– Make sure the weight of the mobility device does notexceed the weight for which the tie-down systemis certified. Consult the tie-down manufacturer'sdocumentation.

– If you are unsure how much your mobility deviceweighs, then you must have it weighed using calibratedscales.

9.2 Transferring the mobility device to a vehicle

WARNING!The mobility device is in danger of tipping overif it is transferred to a vehicle while the driver isstill seated in the mobility device– Transfer the mobility device without the driverwhenever possible.

– If the mobility device with the driver has to betransferred to a vehicle using a ramp, ensure that theramp does not exceed the maximum safe slope (referto 11 Technical data, page 61).

– If the mobility device has to be transferred to a vehicleusing a ramp that does exceed the maximum safeslope (refer to 11 Technical data, page 61), a winchmust then be used. An attendant can then safelymonitor and assist the transfer process.

– Alternatively, a platform lift may be used.– Ensure that the total weight of the mobility deviceincluding the user does not exceed the maximumpermitted total weight for the ramp or platform lift.

– The mobility device should always be transferred toa vehicle with the backrest in an upright position,the seat lifter lowered and the seat tilt in the uprightposition (refer to 6.7 Driving up and down gradients,page 39).

WARNING!Risk of injury and damage to the mobility deviceIf the mobility device is transferred to a vehicle by anylift while the remote is switched on, there is a risk forthe mobility device falling off the lift.– Remove the batteries or disconnect the bus cablefrom remote to make sure the mobility device isswitched off when using any lifts to transfer themobility device to a vehicle.

1. Drive or push your mobility device into the transport vehicleusing a suitable ramp.

9.3 Transporting the mobility device withoutoccupant

CAUTION!Risk of injury– If you are unable to fasten your mobility devicesecurely in a transport vehicle, Invacare recommendsthat you do not transport it.

Your mobility device may be transported without restrictions,whether by road, rail or by air. Individual transport companies have,however, guidelines which can possibly restrict or forbid certaintransport procedures. Please ask the transport company regardingeach individual case.

• Before transporting your mobility device, make sure the motorsare engaged and that the remote is switched off.Invacare strongly recommends that you additionally disconnector remove the batteries. Refer to Removing the batteries.

• Invacare strongly recommends securing the mobility device tothe floor of the transporting vehicle.

9.3.1 How the mobility device is anchored in a vehicleThe mobility device is not fitted with anchoring points. To anchor themobility device in a vehicle, Invacare recommends to use the steeringheads as anchoring points. Belt loops can be used for fixation.

1. Secure the mobility device by pulling the anchoring system beltsaround the front and rear steering heads (only front fixationshown in the picture, fixation at the rear is similar).

2. Secure the mobility device by tensioning the belts in accordancewith the anchoring system manufacturer’s user manual.

9.4 Disassembling the mobility device fortransport

CAUTION!Injury hazard– If you are unable to fasten your mobility devicesecurely in a transport vehicle, Invacare recommendsthat you do not transport it!

• Before transporting your mobility device, make sure the motorsare engaged and that the remote is switched off.Invacare strongly recommends that you additionally disconnector remove the batteries. Refer to 9.4.4 Removing/Installing thebatteries, page 57.

• Invacare strongly recommends securing the mobility device tothe floor of the transporting vehicle.

Proceed as follows to disassemble the mobility device for transport:

1. Disconnect the remote. Refer to 9.4.1 Disconnecting/Connectingthe remote, page 56.

2. Remove the seat. Refer to 9.4.2 Removing/Installing the seat,page 56.

3. Remove the top shroud. Refer to 9.4.3 Removing/Installing thetop cover, page 57.

4. Remove the batteries. Refer to 9.4.4 Removing/Installing thebatteries, page 57.

9.4.1 Disconnecting/Connecting the remote

from the controller connector B.

9.4.2 Removing/Installing the seat

CAUTION!Risk of strains from lifting heavy parts!– Use proper lifting techniques.

1. Pull the detent lever A up and turn the seat to one side.Prevent the seat from engaging with the seat post again.

2. Release the detent lever.

3. Hold the seat assembly B firmly by the backrest and front edgeof the seat.

4. Lift the seat assembly up and away from the seat post D.

Installing the seat

1. Align the seat pivot (C, hidden from view) with the seat post D.2. Pull the detent lever A up and lower the seat assembly B on

the seat post.If necessary, slightly twist seat assembly back and forth to lockit in place.

3. Release the detent lever.4. Pull the seat assembly up to ensure that it is locked in place.

9.4.3 Removing/Installing the top coverThe top cover cannot be completely removed from themobility device without disconnecting the remote cable.

1. Pull the remote cable A through the center hole C in the topcover.

2. Place the top cover D on the frame E and push downward toengage the hook and loop straps F.

3. Secure the remote cable using the clip B on the top cover.

9.4.4 Removing/Installing the batteries

WARNING!Fire and burn hazard due to short circuit atbattery poles– DO NOT short-circuit the battery poles with a toolor metal parts of the mobility device.

– Make sure that the battery pole caps are attached at alltimes when you are not working on the battery poles.

CAUTION!Risk of crushingThe batteries are very heavy. There is a risk of handinjury.– Be aware that the batteries are very heavy.– Handle the batteries with care.

Removing the batteries

1. Disconnect the front battery A from the controller (BLACKconnector B).

2. Disconnect the rear battery C from the front battery (RED Dand BLACK E connectors).

3. Lift rear and front battery out of the battery tray using thebattery handles.

Installing the batteries

Ensure that both batteries are properly seated and restingon the battery tray.

1. Position the front battery A in the battery tray.2. Position the rear battery C in the battery tray.3. Connect the rear battery to the front battery (RED D and

BLACK E connectors).4. Connect the front battery to the controller (BLACK connector

B).

9.4.5 Reassembling the mobility deviceProceed as follows to reassemble the mobility device:

1. Install the battery boxes. Refer to 9.4.4 Removing/Installing thebatteries, page 57 .

2. Install the top cover. Refer to 9.4.3 Removing/Installing the topcover, page 57.

3. Install the seat. Refer to 9.4.2 Removing/Installing the seat, page56.

4. Connect the remote. Refer to 9.4.1 Disconnecting/Connectingthe remote, page 56.

9.5 Lifting/Stairways

WARNING!Risk of injury when moving a power wheelchairbetween floors– DO NOT attempt to move an occupied powerwheelchair between floors using a stairway. Use anelevator to move an occupied power wheelchairbetween floors. If moving a power wheelchairbetween floors by means of a stairway, the occupantMUST be removed and transported independently ofthe power wheelchair.

– Extreme caution is advised when it is necessary tomove an unoccupied power wheelchair up or downthe stairs. Invacare recommends using two assistantsand making thorough preparations.

– Use only secure, nondetachable parts for hand-holdsupports.

– It is strongly recommended to lift the wheelchair onlyby the rear frame and the front forks - otherwiseinjury or damage may occur.

– DO NOT attempt to lift the wheelchair by anyremovable (detachable) parts. Lifting by means ofany removable (detachable) parts of a wheelchairmay result in injury to the user or damage to thewheelchair.

– The weight of the wheelchair with batteries andwithout the user is approximately 50 kg. Use properlifting techniques (lift with your legs) to avoid injury.

WARNING!Risk of injury when using an escalator to move awheelchair between floors– DO NOT use an escalator to move a wheelchairbetween floors. Serious bodily injury may occur.

Follow this procedure for moving the wheelchair between floorswhen an elevator is not available or lifting the wheelchair is necessary:

When using a stairway to move the wheelchair, seat and anyaccessories, move all wheelchair components away from thestairway prior to reassembly.

This procedure needs two assistants to lift the wheelchair totransport it.

1. Remove the occupant from the wheelchair.2. Remove the seat. Refer to 9.4.2 Removing/Installing the seat,

page 563. Remove any accessories on the wheelchair.4. Bend your knees and keep your back straight.5. Ensure that the casters are oriented as shown in the figure above.6. Using the rear chassis A and front forks B as hand hold

supports, transfer the wheelchair base to desired location.7. Using non-removable (nondetachable) parts, transfer the seat

and any accessories to desired location.8. Reinstall any accessories that were removed in STEP 3.9. Reinstall the seat. Refer to 9.4.2 Removing/Installing the seat,

page 56

10.1 ReconditioningThe product is suitable for reconditioning. Actions to be carried out:

• Cleaning and disinfection. Refer to 8 Maintenance, page 47.• Inspection according to service plan. Consult service

instructions, available from Invacare.• Adaptation to the user. Refer to 5 Adjusting the mobility device

to the user's seating posture, page 22.

10.2 Disposal• The equipment wrapping is potentially recyclable.• The metal parts are used for scrap metal recycling.• The plastic parts are used for plastic recycling.• Electric components and printed circuit boards are disposed

of as electronic scrap.• Exhausted or damaged batteries can be returned to your

medical equipment supplier or Invacare.• Disposal must be carried out in accordance with the respective

national legal provisions.• Ask your city or district council for details of the local waste

management companies.
