WELCOME TO
GOTHENBURGGreat shopping, fantastic food, cosy cafés, interesting art galleries,
friendly locals and some of the finest shellfish in the world. In Gothenburg you can find it all within walking distance. Go explore the city and enjoy
the charming small town feeling!
4 THINGS YOU SHOULD TRY
SHRIMP SANDWICHGothenburg is famous for fish and seafood and the shrimp sandwich is very typical to the city. Try it at Heaven 23 in Gothia Towers, or at the fish market hall Feskekôrka.
FIKAThe word “fika” basically means having coffee or tea with a snack – but you will be surprised by how serious the Swedes are about it. Visit any café and dive in to a micro-cosmos of buns and cakes.
CRAFT BEERWith approximately 30 micro-breweries, Gothenburg is Sweden’s beer capital. Stig- bergets, Poppels and Dugges are just some of the city’s renowned breweries. Of course, non-alcoholic alternatives are available. HERRING Pickled herring is very typically Swedish and the locals enjoy it at Christmas, Midsummer, Easter – and quite frankly all year round. The same goes for meatballs.
THE BIRTH OF GOTHENBURGIn 1621, King Gustavus Adolphus founded Gothen-burg. At Gustav Adolfs torg 4 square you will find the statue of the king once widely known as The Lion of the North. Walk 350 metres to see one of Gothen-burg’s oldest buildings, Kronhuset 3 dating back to 1654. The whole area is oozing with history and today you will find a number of artisan shops for glassworks, pottery and other crafts here.
EXPLORE THE MARKET HALLBrowse the food stalls in the beautiful market hall Saluhallen 14 for local and international delica-cies or try the restaurants and cafés. The local salesmen are always happy to let you sample their cheese, hams and more. Do not miss the divine chocolate pralines at Flickorna Kanold. And if you are looking for lunch, keep an eye open for the word “dagens” which generally means good value for money.
INTERIOR DESIGN AND FASHIONStart your walk at Kungsportsplatsen 10 and head down one of the streets Kungsgatan 9 and Vallgatan 12 . The charming area within the moat is home to a mix of small specialist shops and large chain stores. Make sure to visit the area around the street Magasinsgatan 11 well known for inspiring interior design shops, fashion and great street food.
SWEETS AND SEAFOOD IN HAGAWhen in Haga 18 , enjoy a coffee break and a tradi-tional Swedish cinnamon bun (this routine is called to have a “fika” in Swedish). You should definitely try a cinnamon bun at Café Husaren or a marzipan praline at Bräutigams. If you want something more filling, Sjöbaren is a good choice. Gothenburg is famous for superb seafood and at this bar you can have a luxurious lunch at a decent price.
DISCOVER THE MAIN BOULEVARDThe main boulevard, Kungsportsavenyen 15 (also called Avenyn) stretches from Götaplatsen 19 to the bridge Kungsportsbron 13 by the moat. The boulevard is lined with cafés, restaurants and pop-ular bars. In summer, Avenyn becomes even live- lier as the pavements fill up with great spots to en-joy a coffee or drink in the sun. If you enjoy shopp-ing you can find just about everything you need and a little more on Avenyn and its side streets.
VISIT A GOLDEN ERAOn your way towards Haga, you will see a lot of impressive 18th century buildings, reminding us of a time of great wealth. In particular, you should have a look at the building that nowadays houses the Museum of Gothenburg 6 at Norra Hamn- gatan 12. Once, this was the majestic home of the Swedish East India Company that traded large amounts of goods with China. The canal, built in the 17th century was constructed with help from Dutch experts.
LUNCH IN THE TRENDY MAGASINS- KVARTERETThe street Magasinsgatan 11 is known for trendy shops and good food. Try some fried herring with mashed potatoes at the urban food truck Strömm- ingsluckan or an Asian tofu bun at hipster-friendly Jinx. Also, grab a coffee at café da Matteo. They have a roasting house and bakery on-site and are well known for their Swedish style coffee break, “fika”.
SMALL BOUTIQUES AND SWEET TREATSContinue to Haga 18 , an area home to numerous small boutiques that offer a mix of old and new. Stroll along the main street Haga Nygata and browse among a wonderful assortment of antiques, handi-crafts, designer goods, books, children’s clothing and vintage fashion. Don’t miss the traditional clogg and leather shop Haga Trätoffelfabrik, enjoy a good cup of coffee at one of the cafés, or treat yourself to a massage or Swedish sauna at the beautiful Haga- badet spa 17 .
SAMPLE FRESH SEAFOODCan’t get enough of seafood? The fish market hall Feskekôrka 16 from 1874 is well worth a visit, not only for all the fresh fish, but also for the church- like exterior design. Have some oysters, lobster, shrimp or whatever floats your boat!
A QUICK FIX WITH STYLENeed to find great shopping quickly? The Swedish department store Nordiska Kompaniet 8 is always a good choice. This exclusive store offers fashion, accessories, beauty and interior design. And when you are in the area – pop over to Fredsga-tan 7 . A street lined with international fashion brands just a stone’s throw away. Walk for a minute or two and you’ll enter one of Sweden’s most popular shopping centres with 200 shops under one roof, Nordstan 1 .
HAGA – A UNIQUE NEIGHBOURHOODIn Haga 18 , you will notice a big change in archi-tecture. Here, the main pedestrian street is lined with beautiful wooden houses. Many of these were built in the late 19th century and are very special to Gothenburg. If your legs are still strong, climb the stairs to the late 17th century fortress Skansen Kronan 22 to admire an amazing view of the city.
AN ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECEFrom Haga you should head towards Götaplatsen 19 at the top of the main boulevard Kungsports- avenyen 15 . Here you will find the Gothenburg Museum of Art, the Gothenburg Concert Hall, the Gothenburg City Theatre and the centre for contemporary art Göteborgs Konsthall. Between the beautiful Concert Hall and the City Theatre, you will also find Carl Milles’ impressive sculpture Poseidon 19 watching over the city.
