What is
List the 3 main materials you could use in this class.
As well as using hand tools & machines we also use…
Which stand for…
Design a teacher and label the key good & bad points about him/her.
MAIN TASK
TEACHER
A brief is information that you are given (usually by a client) to help you decide how to design a
product.
What is a Brief?
The SPECIFICATION or MANDATORIES are things that you MUST include.
Teachers are employed to help pupils learn. They need to keep everyone safe.
Good teachers make lessons interesting.Teachers need to uphold the rules of the school.

Homework – About you
WALT WILFGain basic knowledge in
the types of plastic.
Understand why modelling is important in creating &
amending designs.
Draw using 1 point perspective.
Input into the starter discussion.
Create a 1:1 scale model of your desk tidy.
A well drawn road using 1PP correctly.
We will be using a pillar drill to put pencil/pen holes into your plastic.
Equipment – desk Tidy
We will use a line bender to make straight bends in your acrylic. We cannot make curves in this project.
These will both be demonstrated to you.
Modelling
• A model is a good way realise your design ideas.
• It can be used to help you think of ideas.
• It can also be used after you have designed a few ideas for your product. It will help you see if there any problems that you may have when you come to manufacture your selected idea. This enables you to develop your best idea in your Final Design.
• It will also help you with your drawings
Perspective Drawing
One-point perspective images draw the viewers eye along the lines to the vanishing point.
Perspective Task
• Using a vanishing point - draw a road in one point perspective. It should disappear into the horizon and be divided in two so cars can travel on both sides.
(15 mins)
Then…• Add some trees/lampposts,
and some grass on the verge of the road.(5 min)
One Point
Perspective
Extension Task
Draw your desk tidy in 1 point perspective.

Homework – Environmental issues
Complete a poster of how to use the pillar drill safely.
Cover all the key points.

Simple Evaluation Star
DRILLING
MODELLING
LINE
BENDING
DESIGN
An Evaluation Star can have a number of points, this one is to get you used to using them.
Rate each aspect from 1 to 10, drawing a line between them.
Using a scale of 1 to 10 you need to rate each element of your product.
1 = Poor
10 = Excellent
Once you have rated each aspect you need to finish the star diagram by drawing a line between them, as shown opposite.
This will show areas that you excel in and areas to improve on in your next project.

WALT WILF
Increase our knowledge in the types of wood.
Understand why different woods are selected for
different purposes.
Input into the starter discussion and participation
in the YES/NO game.
Using the correct type of wood for a product in the
main task.
I will pass around a selection of wood. Look at them and see if you think they fall into the category of Manmade or Natural. You do not need to write anything down.
Once you have all looked we will take a show of hands for each piece and see if you are correct.
Grain
MDF – Skirting Board
Why?
• It’s easy to shape and finish.
• Consistent size & shape.
• Environmentally friendly.
• Cheap.
MAIN TASK
• Pick one of the following woods;– Oak: Hard Wearing, Strong, Glues & nails well, Resistant to decay. (£££)
– Sycamore: Very strong, Does not warp when wet. Fine texture. (£££)
– Pine: Strong, Very tall and straight, Nails easily, Finishes well. (££)
– MDF: Consistent strength and size, Shapes well, Can warp if not sealed. (£-££)
and using your knowledge, and the information provided, draw and label an idea of what product could be made with it and why it is the best wood for the job.
During the Main Task
• Think of existing products.• Why have you chosen your wood? Use
the woods characteristics to your advantage.
• Consider cost implications in choosing your particular wood. – £ = cheap– ££ = mid range– £££ = expensive
