Greetings Jaguars! Boulder Creek is off to an amazing start this school year. It is very gratifying to see the outstanding teaching and learning that happens day in and day out on our campus. We continue to focus our efforts on increased academic rigor, meaningful relevant instruction, positive relationships, and personal responsibility. There are many exciting things happening at Boulder Creek in the month of October. Next week is Homecoming week. This year's theme is "The American Dream" with spirit dress up days, a school assembly on Friday, a community tailgating event, the Varsity Football game vs Mountain Ridge, and the always popular Homecoming Dance on Saturday from 7-10 pm. Sophomores and Juniors have the opportunity to take the PSAT test on campus on October 19th. The testing fee is $20. Students may register for the test through the bookstore in the main office. On October 26, BCHS will host the Prevention Convention. This important event will focus on life choices to support social, emotional, physical health and well-being. We will have 20 guest speakers for this event with a special presentation on social media safety. Lastly, parent teacher conferences will take place on Thursday, October 27th. Parents can pre-schedule conferences online to learn about their student progress and the supports available for student learning. The counseling department is hosting a FAFSA night for parents of seniors during the conference evening. I hope you will join us for these community outreach and student engagement activities this month.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

You are invited to our fall Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, October 27th! The Boulder Creek High School faculty looks forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s academic achievement. We believe that keeping the lines of communication open between parents/guardians and teachers is a crucial component of facilitating student success!

This is a wonderful opportunity to speak with teachers on a one-to-one basis regarding your student’s academic progress. Teachers will be available in their classrooms for 10 minute conferences from 12:00pm - 6:30pm.

It is recommended that you sign up for specific conference time by going to the school web page (bchs.dvusd.org) and clicking on the link to the Parent-Teacher Conference scheduling tool. Teachers will also post sheets outside their classroom doors to note conference times are still available. You can sign up for an open time slot and either wait outside the classroom or visit another teacher in the meantime. Please log onto PowerSchool for your students schedule.

We are excited to be offering the Towing Companies of Southern Idaho Entre-

preneurship Scholarship. Criteria: Applicant must be attending college by either

the Spring or Fall Semester of 2017. They must be pursuing a Business related

degree or plan on starting their own business. The scholarship is open to both

TAX CREDIT DONATIONS

Anyone with or without children, married or single, is eligible for this unprecedented state tax credit.

The $400 maximum state tax credit is available for taxpayers who are married and filing jointly. A husband and

wife who file separate returns for a taxable year in which they could have filed a joint return may each claim only

$200.

For a single individual or a head of household, the tax credit is $200.

A state tax credit will allow you to reduce the amount of your tax liability to the state or increase your refund

from the state. If you donate the maximum $400, your Arizona tax bill would be $400 less or your refund would be

$400 more.

You may donate less than $400 and be eligible to receive the state tax credit in the amount of your donation.

The amount you donate (up to $400) will be the amount you may claim as a state tax credit.

You may split your $400 donation among more than one public school, but will still qualify for a maximum state

credit of $400.

Your donation also reduces your taxable income to the federal government, thereby reducing your tax burden

to the federal government usually by 1/3 of the donation amount.

The National Honor Society is holding its annual Fall Blood Drive on October 20, 2016, in the Boulder Creek Auxiliary Gymnasium from 7:00 am until 12:00 pm. The Boulder Creek Lil’ Jags will be having their “11th Annual Costume Parade and Fall Party” on

Friday, October 28th! We always look forward to showing off our cute costumes and visiting all of our big

friends on campus. Look for us during 3rd hour. We gladly accept treats, but no tricks please. We hope

NURSE’S CORNER Please be aware that for infection control reasons, students will no longer be allowed to lie down in the nurse's office unless they are being sent home for medical reasons by the nurse. The health office must be reserved as an area of isolation for ill students. Students who present with fatigue, mild headaches, stomach discomfort, etc will be treated if possible and returned to class. Thank you for your understanding of this important procedure.

Please keep your student home if they have ANY of the following symptoms:

Fever >100 degrees— must be fever free X 24 hours without the use of meds to return

Body aches or chills

Productive cough with colored phlegm

Vomiting

Red eyes with drainage, sensitivity to light or swelling

If your student has been diagnosed with a condition, information concerning this condition needs to be signed by a physician and sent to the nurse so it is available in their file. For example, migraine headaches.

Strong Community is Built Upon Strong Schools

When a family is about to move to a new area, the

first task for most dedicated parents is to find out

where the well-respected schools are in that new city,

community. And what determines or makes a well-

respected school? The community, the parents and

the staff. Erroneously, many put blame on perceived

less than well thought of schools on the teachers, the

administration or school district office. Show me a

great school and what will be the common denomina-

tor throughout all great schools will be the level of

parental support/development.

For me, I am an ardent supporter of public education.

It’s wonderful that in our society today, there are

numerous choices to send our children to school yet

on the other hand, there are too many choices. Why

are there so many choices? Plainly stated, schools

pop up on virtually every street corner because some-

one has the perfect solution for a “problem.” Within

Arizona, the funding for public schools is stretched

beyond thin and the funding only becomes more lim-

ited because of more school choices. Why can’t we as

a community, unify and through support of our ex-

isting, public schools – find solutions?

No school is perfect. Whether you pay $25,000 a year

for K-12 tuition or virtually nothing, the quality of

education is dependent on a parent’s involvement.

Parents should build a relationship with their child’s

teachers and be in regular contact. Should a problem

arise, the relationship is already formed and the task

of getting the child back on track can be readily re-

solved. Parents should also find a way to connect with

their child’s school, this is not implying volunteering

10 or more hours a week rather, a way to be at school

periodically to gauge for themselves how well the

school is functioning. Volunteering opens up all eyes

to the truth how, overall, the staff and teachers at

most public schools work ardently to educate our

children.

Go Manga! Go Anime! Go BCHS Manga Club! Fifteen students and two chaperones, including Club Sponsor

Mrs. Vanessa Montgomery, had a most mega field trip on Friday, September 2, 2016, to Saboten Con 2016; the

premier Anime/Manga convention in Arizona. This field trip was 10 hours long and was held at the Phoenix

Sheraton Hotel, downtown Phoenix. Attending were President Lexi (Canada) Child, Vice-President Brian

Cooper, Treasurer Ash Alegria, and club members Ashlyn Pelsma, Audree Hempelman, Mary Stapleton, Jessica

Lester, Alexis Mata, Leslie Wolbert, Amethyst Lonsdale, Shannon Sparrgrove, Tess Chelednik, Britten Richard-

son, Arianna Mikkelsen, and Kelly Behan. This is the 6th year BCHS Manga Club has been at SabotenCon and

all club members with in costume! Panals and vendors were there for cosplay etiquette, voice acting, anime

art, anime impressions, costuming, cosplay chess, Lolita, photography, gaming, and much more. Highlights of

this Con were artists Alfred Trujilo and Ryan McMurry, voice actor Eric Stuart, voice actress Erica Mendez,

voice actress Lisle Wilkerson, Cosplayers Reika and Giada Robin, and bands such as the Slants, Coco Avenue,

and Kazha. We thank Principal Lauren Sheahan for supporting Manga Club and all our other clubs at BCHS,

and Greg Fennel, director of SabotenCon, for discounted tickets every year. Manga Club meets every Tuesday

in Rm. 506 and everyone is welcome. Manga Club has been cosplaying, gaming, and drawing for you at BCHS

since 2005.

ATHLETIC FEES FOR 2016-2017

In 2015-2016 the Deer Valley Unified School District faced another year of reduced funding by the State Legislature. As a result, and in an effort to balance the district’s budget, the DVUSD Governing Board has approved an athletic fee for the 2015-2016 school year. The approved fee is in compliance with legislation passed in 1995, A.R.S. 15-342.24, enabling schools to assess reasonable fees for optional extra-curricular activities and programs. The purpose of the athletic fee is to provide revenue to maintain and operate athletic programs, which exceeds $2,000,000 per year, for 7th-8th grade and high school students. These fees collected will help defray the ex-penses of operating the DVUSD athletic programs.

Approved Athletic Fees 7th/8th grade athlete $60 per sport ($120 maximum per athlete)

9th-12th grade athlete $100 per sport ($200 maximum per athlete) Family $300 maximum per family/household*

* A family or family household is defined by the United States Census Bureau for statistical purposes as “a householder and one or more other people related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption.” ATHLETIC FEE PAYMENT TIMELINE:

Payments and/or hardship waivers must be submitted starting

week 2 of the season for each sport (Payment window for each season of sport below)

All payments including tax credit must be paid during the below

listed time frame at the bookstore or the front office.

It is the parent’s responsibility to keep receipts when paying for

multiple family members in regards to tracking a family maxi-mum amount being met.

Student-Athletes will not be permitted to play in an AIA competi-

tion until the athletic fee and/or waiver is submitted.

Athletic fees are non-refundable

The DVUSD Athletic Fees do not guarantee playing time in

competition.

Academic progress for participants is checked

EACH week. A participant will be declared

INELIGIBLE if he or she receives two consecu-

tive weekly notices of failure from the SAME

CLASS. The period of ineligibility will continue

until the student-athlete’s grade is passing. At

the coach’s discretion, ineligible players may continue to practice; how-

ever, they MAY NOT compete in any events. Eligibility is checked every

Thursday; which is applicable for the following Monday through Saturday.
