A SAILING HOTSPOT Montenegro is one of Europe’s youngest countries, with a long and colourful history.

Originally settled by Illyrian tribes, the area became part of the Roman Empire in 168 BC. Since then, the French, Ottomans, Austro-Hungarians and Venetians have each left a distinctive cultural legacy.

For many centuries, the ‘Boka’ Bay, as it is known locally, was a bustling harbour servicing Venetian merchant ships on their way east to the Orient.

There’s written evidence of a port established here as far back as 1361, but it was towards the end of the 19th century that the Austro-Hungarian Admiral Maximilan Daublebsky von Sterneck set up a naval base in Tivat, launching a century of maritime activity in the process.

A SOUND INVESTMENT Independent since 2006, Montenegro is steadily developing closer ties with Europe and has secured candidate status for the European Union, as well as being an associate member of NATO.

According to a World Travel & Tourism Council and Oxford Economics report (2011), Montenegro is likely to be the fastest-growing travel and tourism economy in the world over the next decade.

NEARBY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTSYou can fly to most European cities in less than three hours, and the local airports have facilities for private and commercial aircraft. The traditional cruising waters of Italy and Greece are an easy day’s sail away.

AboveOur Lady of the Rocks, 3.6nm from Porto Montenegro.

LeftUNESCO Protected Bay of kotor, often described as Europe’s southernmost fjord, this submerged river canyon is a rare geological marvel, 12km from Porto Montenegro.

MEDIEVAL TOWNSMontenegro is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the ancient walled city of Kotor, and Durmitor National Park – historical towns around every corner are reminders of the country’s grand past.

Once home to a Venetian fleet of 1,000 ships, Perast overlooks Our Lady of the Rocks, a small man-made islet with a beautiful 17th century church. The ancient town of Kotor is one of the best preserved in the region; its 4km long city walls are illuminated by night to create the striking outline of a lion’s head.

ENCHANTING SCENERYLovcen National Park soars majestically behind the Bay of Kotor, with countless hiking trails winding through its 6,400 hectares. Mount Lovcen climbs steadily to 1,749m, with an Austro-Hungarian mountain road leading visitors up to the impressive Mausoleum of Petar II Petrovic Njegoš, a symbol of Montenegrin national identity.

Whether dining at one of the many coastal cafés, cruising along the harbour, or walking the Kotor walls, magnificent views from around the Bay are never far away.

ENCLOSED WITHIN THE BUTTERFLY-SHAPED BAY OF KOTOR LIE SOME OF THE MEDITERRANEAN’S

DEEPEST WATERS, ENCHANTING TOWNS AND SPECTACULAR MOUNTAINS.

A RETURN TO NATURELike the Venetians, locals hop by boat from one side of the Kotor Bay to another. Clusters of stone fisherman’s houses capped in terracotta dot the coast and weathered wooden boats line up along makeshift quays.

Each morning, organic markets with fresh locally caught fish, fresh fruit, vegetables, meats and cheeses fill the nearby piazzas.

TIME-HONOURED TRADITIONSAll along the coast family-run restaurants known as ‘konobe’ serve simply prepared Mediterranean-style food. Mountain village communities still produce full-flavoured oil from the area’s abundant žutica olives, while older generations proudly maintain the tradition of making rakija, a potent fruit brandy thoughtfully made by hand every autumn.

INDOOR / OUTDOOR LIVINGThe homes at Porto Montenegro were designed by ReardonSmith Architects, who have several prestigious Four Seasons hotel projects to their name. The architecture echoes the traditional Montenegrin style with stone façades and tiled roofs.

Internationally renowned designer Tino Zervudachi conceived the interiors of each residence to make the most of the warm, Mediterranean climate. Fully retractable glass doors open onto extensive terraces, while high ceilings and generous windows maximise the natural light. Outside, the bespoke landscaping, complete with elegant water features, was designed by Martin Lane Fox – previously Vice Chairman of Britain’s Royal Horticultural Society.

REGENT HOTEL & RESIDENCESPorto Montenegro is developing a luxury hotel and residences in partnership with Regent Hotels & Resorts.

Inspired by Venetian aesthetics and the deep nautical tradition of the Bay of Kotor, the Regent Porto Montenegro – designed by ReardonSmith Architects and Tino Zervudachi – will encompass some 80 units including hotel rooms, suites and multi-room residences ranging from studios to penthouses with rooftop terraces and private pools.

Facilities will include swimming pools, restaurants, cafés and library bar, as well as a signature Regent spa and fitness centre.
