Debt -Free in the New Year? Steps to Get Out of Debt Faster

I f you?re one of the millions of Americans who added ?be debt-free? to their New Year?s resolutions, check out these simple steps to help you get out of debt as quickly as possible.

1. List your debts and interest rates. Write down all your loan balances and

their interest rates, which should be listed on each statement, in order of

rate from highest to lowest.

2. Focus on the highest rate debt . The highest rate is costing you the most,

so make additional payments whenever possible to pay it off quicker.

Continue making minimum payments on your other loan balances to

avoid additional fees and penalty rates.

3. Transfer your balances. Consider opening a lower rate credit card or

personal loan and using it to pay off your higher rate balances. Horizon

4. Pay yourself first . It may seem counterintuitive to put money in savings

when you?re trying to pay off debt, but having cash on hand in case of an

emergency will keep you from going further into debt. Try to keep at least

5. Spend less. Write down your budget ? how much money you?re bringing

in and where your money is going. Look for ways to cut down, such as

Don' t Blow That Holiday Bonus!

If you?re like most people, you?ve probably decided how you want to spend your holiday bonus before you even have the check in hand ? but that may not be the smartest way to use your extra cash.

This year, consider saving or investing your holiday bonus rather than using it to fund a few fleeting moments of fun. You?ll be much better off in the long run when you handle your holiday bonus responsibly, and your future self will thank you for it later. Here are three better uses for your end-of-year bonus:

Pay off high-rate debts.

If you have high-rate credit card debts to pay off, don?t even think about spending your holiday bonus on a frivolous item or vacation getaway. Instead, put the money toward your bills to start digging yourself out of debt.

Build an emergency fund.

Be prepared for the worst by using your holiday bonus to build up an emergency fund. Experts typically advise having enough savings on hand to cover three to six months? worth of living expenses, but families depending on one income should consider saving even more.

Contribute to an Individual Ret irement Account (IRA).

If you plan to rely on Social Security or pensions during your retirement years, you?re in for a rough ride. These days, it?s up to you to build your own retirement fund. Use your holiday bonus to contribute to an IRA, and you?ll be on your way to securing a stress-free retirement.

She joined Lock Haven Area FCU in 1998, which merged with Horizon in 2005. LeAnna?s favorite part of working at Horizon is interact ing and building relat ionships with our members. Her role at the credit union enables LeAnna to continuously build relat ionships and make an impact. Outside of Horizon, LeAnna enjoys baking and has a self-described mild obsession for cooking programs on television.

Kate Smith ? Account Solutions Manager A Horizon member before she could crawl, Kate joined the team as a part-t ime teller short ly after graduating high school. Over the past 12 years, Kate has served in many roles, including assistant to the President & CEO. Today, she leads a team of four in Account Solut ions. Her favorite part of her job includes making connections and helping members with their financial needs. ?There is a wonderful feeling that overcomes you like a t idal wave when you have helped or educated a member,? says Kate. ?Going above and beyond reminds me why I love what I do.?

Jody Frantz ? Lock Haven Branch Manager With years of customer service, management and HR experience, Jody joined the team just over two years ago as a full-t ime FSR. She was promoted to Branch Manager last year when the previous manager was elevated to mortgage originator. Jody loves how the management team respects and appreciates employees? ideas and solicits their input. In addit ion to banking, Jody is also a cert ified Reiki Master, Reflexologist and Holist ic Health Pract it ioner.

Financial Service Representative, Third Street Judy began her banking career 22 years ago from a t ip from the wife of the CEO; ?She told me they were hiring,? says Judy. ?I had no experience whatsoever!? After spending t ime as a part-t ime teller, Judy transit ioned to Marketing Coordinator, a role she served for 15 years. Today, Judy is the seasoned veteran of the Third Street staff, frequently requested by members to help with their banking. ?I love being able to help people move into better financial situat ions,? she says.

5 Scams to Watch Out for This Holiday Season

We want you to have a great holiday season ? and not get taken by holiday scams. So, always be on guard ? and enjoy a happy holiday!

1. Internet holiday scamsThis popular scam involves setting up fake sales websites that look professional and offer unbelievable deals. Of course, scammers will take your money for merchandise they?ll never send and may use your information for identity theft.

- How to avoid it: Don?t trust a site or name you don?t know ? check them out. Don?t fall for prices that seem too good to be true ? they usually are.

2. Charity-related holiday scamsScammers may fool you by wearing seasonal costumes and donning uniforms or badges for a fake charity.

- How to avoid it: If you don?t have time to check out how genuine the collector is, simply don?t give. If you do want to help, find the charity name and donate directly.

- Also watch out for: Telephone solicitations and sellers at your doorstep who show you a charity catalog, take your money and never return.

3. Holiday scams in the mallCrowds mean big rewards for pickpockets. If they steal your wallet, they?ll have your cash, credit cards and personal info that could lead to ID theft.

- How to avoid it: Keep your wallet in a closed purse or a pocket with your hand on it. Leave non-essential identifying information and spare credit cards at home.

4. Holiday scams at the cash registerAt the cash register, beware of being short-changed ? intentionally or unintentionally.

- How to avoid it: Have a basic idea of the total cost before you reach the register and, if you don?t have the correct money, know what size bill you'll use and how much change to expect. Don?t leave the register until you've checked your change and receipt.

5. Work-related holiday scamsSince many of us are hard-pressed for cash, we're eager to find seasonal jobs. Knowing this, scammers send emails and post ads promising non-existent jobs for which you?ll need to pay an upfront fee.

- How to avoid it: Never pay for a job. Even legitimate agencies that earn their money by finding work earn their fees from employers ? not employees. Be wary if it?s a ?work now, get paid later? job, and check the employer?s credentials.
