The transfer bus departs from the airport for New Smyrna Beach. The total distance from Orlando Airport to the Art Center in New Smyrna Beach is 126km. The route takes us due east for less than 1 hour, through the center of Florida; then along Interstate # 95 north, before turning east again on FL-44 to New Smyrna Beach. The drive will take about 1 hr and 30 Minutes.

Arrive at The Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA). Check in and take a short tour of the facilities.

New Smyrna Beach

This small town of about 23,000 people is located on the Atlantic Ocean, just north of the socalled

„Space Coast“ – Cape Canaveral and south of Daytona Beach, best known for the NASCAR

races on the Daytona International Speedway. In New Smyrna Beach cars may be driven on the

beach, on a stretch of firm white sand, from the inlet south of 27th Avenue.

New Smyrna Beach‘s small size belies its great artistic spirit. It has been called „One of the Best

Small Arts Towns in America.“ Many art festivals are held throughout the year in New Smyrna,

and visitors find unique pieces at the area‘s art galleries. Music lovers delight in New Smyrna‘s

concerts and festivals

that feature world

famous musicians. The

Dinner at the Commons. This is a „Welcome Dinner“ to celebrate the start of a fun-filled period of exciting happenings, stimulating adventures and new friendships. The day is at leisure at ACA.

Your Stay at ACA

YOUR MEALS: // All your meals are served at The Commons.

BREAKFAST - A continental, self service breakfast is provided each morning, consisting of fruit,

cereals, bagels, muffins and coffee/tea.

LUNCH - A buffet-style lunch is served each day from 12:30 – 1:30 pm and typically includes a

vegetarian and non-vegetarian dish, a large salad and sandwich options.

DINNER - The evening meal is served from 6:00 to 7:00 pm and includes vegetarian and non-

vegetarian main dishes, vegetables, salad and desert.

The chef works to provide a variety of meals during your stay that meet the wide ranging tastes of the

visitors. Guests with specific diets and food requirements should inform NATO LTD prior to their tour of

their particular needs.

ALCOHOL: ACA does not hold a liqour license. Wine is therefore not available with the above meals.

Guests can, however, buy wine at a liqour store in town to be enjoyed with their meals.

“Old Quilts – New Quilts” - with Space Coast Quilters

Members of the Space Coast Quilters Guild come for a visit, bringing quilts for show and tell. They will spend a couple of hours with us, - to meet, exchange ideas and enjoy the company of the visiting quilters. The Space Coast Quilters are based in Titusville, a few miles to the south of New Smyrna Beach. This is a busy club of quilters that has created and donated over 300 quilts to organizations, such as hospitals, hospices as well abused women and children. The president of the club, - Joyce Tesdall will be leading the group for the visit. Lunch with the Space Coast Quilters.

Transportation will be available to go to the beach. The star attraction in New Smyrna Beach is its 13 miles stretch of white sandy beaches. Sunbathing, swimming, strolling or doing nothing at all is the choice of most visitors. New Smyrna Beach was voted Florida‘s best beach 8 years in a row by Orlando Sentinel! Return to ACA. Your Stay at ACA ACCOMMODATIONS: // All the facilities at ACA are air conditioned.

STANDARD ROOMS - The 24 individual private rooms are located a short walk from the studios in

a secluded enclave. Wireless internet and laundry facilities are provided. Each 250 square foot (23.23

sq.m.) room contains a double bed, private bathroom, work desk, and small refrigerator. Windows look

out over the dense brush and Florida fauna. Each room is suitable for 1 or 2 guests.

SUITES - 4 rooms are disabled accessible, equipped with an extra bed (pull out sofa). These rooms

are suitable for maximum 3 guests.

COTTAGES - 3 one-bedroom cottages, tucked away from the studios, offer privacy and expansive

views of nature. These 800 square foot (74.3 sq.m.) deluxe tri-level cottages boast an open living area

with 20 foot ceilings, an elevated kitchen with all the amenities, laundry facilities, a loft style bedroom

and private outlook deck.

Depart from New Smyrna Beach by bus for St. Augustine, for a full day of fun and shopping. Arrive in St. Augustine, A local tour guide comes on board the bus to provide a 1-hour tour of the city, followed by a walking tour through the historic part of town for another hour. You now have free time to browse in the downtown area and to have lunch in one of the many fascinating restaurants (optional). Depart from St. Augustine for the Factory Outlet Stores that are located neraby on I-95. Depart for home. Return to ACA. Dinner at The Commons. B-D

St. Augustine St. Augustine is a fascinating city and a must to visit by any traveler passing through the area. It is a

historic gem, - the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the United States. As soon as you

approach the city center the Spanish influence becomes apparent. Juan Ponce de Leon, in search of the

legendary Fountain of Youth, landed here in 1513, and took possession of the region for Spain. In 1565

King Phillip II sent Pedro Menendez de Aviles to colonize the territory. He arrived in Florida on the Feast

Day of St. Augustine and named the landing site after the saint.

St. Augustine was ceded to England in 1763. It had

served as the seat of the Spanish government, in

charge of 30 christian missions as well as all

Spanish possessions in Florida and Georgia. In

1783, in recognition of Spain‘s assistance to the

United States in its war against Britain, Florida was

returned to Spain. Florida, finally, became a U.S.

possession in 1821. Thus it is a fact that Florida

will celebrate its 200 year anniversay as part and

parcel of the UnitesStatesin 2021. Castillo de San Marcos, a Spanish fortress built 1672-95 >

Breakfast at The Commons. We are off, through town to popular Flagler Avenue. Spend a couple of hours browsing on Flagler Avenue and/or on the adjacent beach. Lunch (optional) at JB‘s Fish Camp, a rustic traditional Florida seafood restaurant. Participate in the Flagler Avenue Wine Walk. During the progressive event, taste your choice of more than 100 showcased wines. Wine tasting passports cost $25.00 and include 20 tasting tickets and a keepsake wine glass. Those who share their 20 tasting tickets with a friend may get an additional wine glass for $5.00. Return to ACA. Dinner at The Commons. B-D

Your Stay at ACA

TRANSPORTATION: The Art Center was built in a peaceful and quiet location, surrounded by nature, to

elicit the best from each artist, absent from the influences of the „real“ world. By the same token it is only

a matter of a short drive to nearby shops, restaurants, the river or the beach.

Transfers, tours and excursions are by tour bus and included in your package. Your tour manager will

be present and in charge of each such event.

NATO LTD will have a 12-seater van on location to be used as a shuttle service as needed. This will

include trips to nearby convenience stores, restaurants, the beach, etc.

BICYCLES: ACA has several bikes that you are free to use.

SCOOTERS: There are those who

would like to be independant to come

and go as they like. For this purpose you

can rent a scooter. The scooters are

available on location ($60 for 1 day /

$350 for the entire period of your stay).

You will need your driver‘s license for

the rental. A helmet and lock are

included in the rental.

Your Stay at ACA

THE STUDIOS & OTHER FACILITIES: // You will have full access to the facilities for your entire stay.

The original buildings at ACA were built in 1982. Several buildings were renovated and added in 1994.

Keeping true to the rustic Florida Cracker-style, all of the buildings are constructed from stained cedar,

with lead-coated copper roofs. Inspired by the site‘s dense, jungle-like vegetation the separate structures

are connected by a winding boardwalk. Both separated and linked by the boardwalk and the jungle, the

studios each afford the necessary privacy and spatial focus for individual creative activity. The boardwalk

acts at once as a walkway, theater, and informal gathering area.

The spacious and beautiful Whatmore Commons studio has been designated for the Quilters Group

activities. You will also have access to the library and several other buildings; one to relax with a large

TV; another with a piano ... NATO LTD will have staff on location to help with logistics.

The focus of this class is on 2 different projects from the book Strip your Stash, using the Stripology ruler to cut your fabrics fast and efficiently. You have the options to make either the Bob & Weave or the Hang Glide.

Guðrún Erla Gísladóttir

Guðrún Erla the well known designer and owner of GE DESIGNS is born and

raised in Iceland. She started quilting at a young age and has been addicted to the

craft ever since. After owning and operating quilt stores in her home country, a

career move brought the family to Minnesota in 2003.

Since then Guðrún has been designing full time, publishing patterns and books from

her home office in Chanhassen, MN, where the family has been located since the

move to the US. Guðrún frequently travels to major quilt shows and visits quilt

and fabric stores to teach her popular quilt designs and patterns.
