The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D. is dean and president of Virginia Theological Seminary and professor of theology and ethics. He is the author of numerous books in systematic theology, Christian ethics, religious diversity, and global Christianity. Enjoy an inside visit before continuing to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the rustic medieval rooftops of Lower Old Town. Shop among the many local merchants and stop for coffee and pastries at a local café before a short drive takes you back to the port.

June 20 – St. Petersburg, Russia Rise early to enjoy a scenic cruise along the city’s waterways, passing magnificent palaces, sumptuous mansions, and stunning cathedrals. Then, visit the Yusupov Palace, one of Europe’s most lavish estates. Explore the estate’s grand halls, view its art collection, and learn about the 1916 palace murder of Grigori Rasputin. Then, journey to the famous St. Isaac’s Square in the heart of the city. St. Isaac’s Cathedral was designed by the French architect Auguste Montferrand and features a vast and opulent interior. Afterward, savor lunch at a local restaurant, followed by a visit to the famous Hermitage Museum. The museum boasts the world’s largest painting collection. Finish your thrilling day of discovery with a visit to the beautiful Church of the Resurrection of the Spilled Blood, a traditional Russian-style multicolored onion-domed church.

This train ride, voted as one of the best in the world, takes you over the “mountainous rooftop” of Norway and through charming villages like Gol and Geilo. At Myrdal, switch to the Flåm Railway for an incredible 20 km ride with a 900-metre descent to the beautiful town of Flåm. Here, you have about 45 minutes of free time. From Flåm, continue by boat through the Aurlandsfjord and into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Nærøyfjord, the narrowest fjord in Europe. This is perhaps the most beautiful part of the Sognefjord with its mighty waterfalls and small farms clinging to the steep mountainsides. At Gudvangen, a bus takes you through the magnificent Nærøy Valley to Voss, the connection point for the final train ride to Bergen. Spend the night in Bergen.

June 17 – BergenSpend the first half of the day as you wish in Bergen. Though this is Norway’s second largest city, it still has the charming atmosphere of a small town.
