The Brazilian League has been organized by CBF

(Brazilian Football Confederation), since 1971, and it’s the most

competitive league in the country. The tournament features

major Brazilian clubs such as Flamengo, São Paulo, Corinthians,

Santos, Grêmio and Internacional.

PERIOD: May–December

FORMAT: A double round-robin competition contested by 20 clubs. Throughout the course of 38 rounds, each club plays every other club twice. The club with the highest number of points by the end of the season is crowned champion, while the four

lowest-placed teams are relegated to the second division.

The São Paulo State League has been organized by

FPF (São Paulo State Football Federation), since 1902,

making it the oldest established league in Brazil. It’s

also considered to be one of the most competitive

tournaments in the country.

FORMAT: 20 clubs are divided into four groups. The two highest-ranking clubs of each group make it to the play-offs, which are one-

legged matches preceding the semi-finals. The finals, in turn, are two-legged, and the winner is

crowned champion.

RIO DE JANEIROSTATE LEAGUE

The Rio de Janeiro State League is organized by FERJ

(Rio de Janeiro State Football Federation). It’s first edition

took place in 1906, and it’s considered one of the most

traditional leagues in the country. With matches taking

place in legendary Maracanã Stadium, this championship

is an exhilarating competition from start to finish.

PERIOD: February–May

FORMAT: The league is actually divided into two competitions, Taça Guanabara and Taça Rio, and it’s

contested by 16 clubs. The winners of each competition play the two-legged finals of the league, which crown

the champion.
