Welcome to the OSAA / U.S. Bank / Les Schwab Tires State Championships!  At the OSAA we believe high school activities provide opportunities for young people to receive a well‐rounded education that challenges both mind and body.  These opportunities enrich and expand our students’ school experience and help them become contributing members of society.    Participation in activities teaches students how to be part of a team; the meaning of respect for themselves and others; and skills like grit, resilience, patience and the ability to collaborate with peers.  They also learn how to fail and, more importantly, how to turn setbacks into success through effort.    Congratulations to all students, coaches, schools and communities who earned the right to participate in this state championship!  And a special thanks to U.S. Bank and Les Schwab Tires for sharing our belief in the value of high school activities through their continued financial commitment.  Together, we remain steadfast in our efforts to provide opportunities for today’s students to experience these valuable lessons.    Thank you for your continued support of Oregon high school activities!  Peter Weber Executive Director, OSAA

On behalf of U.S. Bank, welcome to today's Oregon School Activities Association state championship!  We believe in building strong communities where we live and work. One way we demonstrate this commitment in Oregon is by supporting OSAA programs, which promote leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship in young people. Since 1984, U.S. Bank has been proud to support the OSAA and its 290 member schools, with more than four million dollars in contributions to date.  We extend our congratulations to all of the participants, coaches, families and fans here today. We look forward to our continued partnership with you in support of Oregon's young people  Stacey Dodson President, U.S. Bank Portland and Southwest Washington

Welcome!

Whether students are shooting for the hoop, singing in the choir, marching in time or aiming for the end zone, they are practicing skills that will serve them well in school, on the job and in life.

Today, throughout the state there are 290 high schools serving over 180,000 students. These schools help provide valuable education for our youth both in and outside the classroom to help make Oregon a better place to live. Thank you for being here and for supporting our great young people.

At Les Schwab Tire Centers, we are proud of the players and performers of the OSAA. We are also excited to celebrate our 15th year of being a title sponsor. We believe in supporting students as they learn about commitment, hard work and serving the community — values the company believes in.

Teamwork. Responsibility. Accomplishment.

About the OSAA

The OSAA is comprised of 290 member high schools representing more than 200 Oregon communities. A private non‐profit, board‐governed association, the OSAA is sanctioned by the Oregon State Board of Education and is a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).  It’s History The OSAA began in 1918 when administrators from 36 schools recognized a need for an organization to coordinate and regulate high school interscholastic competition. Thus the Oregon State High School Athletic Association was formed. The name was changed in 1947 to reflect the inclusion of activities outside of traditional athletics.  Mission Statement The mission of the OSAA is to serve member schools by providing leadership and state coordination for the conduct of interscholastic activities, which will enrich the educational experiences of high school students. The OSAA will work to promote interschool activities that provide equitable participation opportunities, positive recognition and learning experiences to students, while enhancing the achievement of educational goals.  What the OSAA Does Much like the NCAA at the collegiate level, the OSAA regulates the eligibility and competition of all high school students in the state. This includes everything from determining which league a school will compete in to sponsoring and administering state championships.  Funding As a private, non‐profit organization, the OSAA does not receive any state funding. Revenue is generated from three sources: school membership fees, state championship gate receipts and corporate sponsors.  OSAA Activities The OSAA sponsors 116 state championships for students competing in 19 interscholastic activities:  Fall Cross Country, Volleyball, Soccer, Football  Winter Cheerleading, Wrestling, Swimming, Basketball, Dance/Drill  Spring Speech, Solo Music, Choir, Band/Orchestra Golf, Tennis, Track & Field, Softball, Baseball

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP DIRECTOR

DR. MATTHEW L. STRAUSER is a retired Oregon choral music educator. He has taught at Corban University, Oregon State University, Santiam Christian Schools, and at Charlo, Montana. He earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Montana in Missoula (he also earned a Bachelor’s in Geology at UM) and a Master of Arts in New Testament Studies from Wheaton College Graduate School. He earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Music Education and Choral conducting at the University of Oregon. He is past president of Oregon ACDA. Matt has always been involved in church music. He is the worship pastor at Keizer Community Church. Matt promotes sight singing as a presenter, adjudicator and clinician. For other interests, Matt enjoys hiking, mountaineering, rock climbing, photography, computers and family. Matt and wife Naomi reside in Salem. They have four married children and three grandchildren. For his “second” career, Matt is selling real estate in the Mid-Willamette Valley. Matt is thrilled to hear the wonderful choirs at the OSAA Championships.

ADJUDICATORS GEOFFREY BOERS is Director of Choral Activities at the University of Washington in Seattle, a program widely recognized as forward thinking, unique, and of great distinction. Under his direction, the graduate choral program has developed a singular mission: to nurture the whole student as conductor-teacher-servant-leader-scholar. Recently, his work has led to the mentoring of local choral cohorts of teachers and conductors who are interested in building professional communities of ongoing mentorship and musical development. He has developed such mentorship programs across the United States and Canada. In addition to these thoughts about mentorship he is actively working with other leaders in ACDA and NAfME to develop a more unified and useful system for development of musicianship, assessment, adjudication, and repertoire grading. Geoffrey maintains an active conducting, teaching, workshop and clinic schedule; his recent engagements have included conducting concerts in Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis, Meyerson Concert Hall in Dallas, New York’s Alice Tully and Avery Fischer Hall at Lincoln Center, the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, and Benaroya Hall in Seattle. In addition, he has served as artist-in-residence in Toronto, Ontario, Mainz, Germany, as well as Seoul, Korea with the world-renown choir the Incheon City Chorale. In addition to his position at the UW, Boers sings professionally and is the conductor of the Tacoma Symphony Chorus where he conducts both the choir and symphony players in a four-concert season.

DR. ANDREW CROW has served on the faculty at Ball State University since 2009. As Director of Choral Activities, he currently leads the Ball State Statesmen and the Chamber Choir. He also teaches conducting and choral literature and supervises the choral conducting program for students pursuing graduate degrees. In addition to teaching, he is also Artistic Director for Muncie’s Masterworks Chorale and Director of Music Ministries for High Street United Methodist Church. At the University of Minnesota, Crow earned the degree Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting following degrees from Temple University and The Ohio State University. Previous teaching positions include Rutgers University in Camden, New Jersey. Since the summer of 2011 he has led an intergenerational choir for a project called Musica in Situ that annually tours to perform choral music in historic and interesting architectural spaces. He consistently contributes scholarship on topics such as intonation, score study, and rehearsal technique for professional organizations in the choral domain. Crow is also an experienced singer, orchestral conductor, and piano technician whose family includes a patient wife and four children, frequently found biking or hiking around Muncie.

DR. WALLACE H. LONG, JR. is Director of Choral Activities at Willamette University since 1983, Dr. Long holds Master and Doctorate degrees from the University of Arizona, and is a past president of Oregon ACDA. A frequent vocal/choral adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor of numerous honor choirs throughout the Northwest; he has conducted all-states in Kansas and Wyoming. Dr. Long is the creator of the Choral Leadership Workshop that focuses on developing student leaders to partner with teachers in fostering choral excellence. Choirs under his direction have performed for state conferences of OMEA, ACDA NW Regional Conventions, National ACDA, IAJE and MENC conventions and in 2003, toured to South Africa at the request of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Long sings with Male Ensemble Northwest (MEN) performing in several ACDA Regionals, and ACDA Nationals in DC and San Antonio. As a member of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers, he performed at Carnegie Hall, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and recorded in France. In 2006, Dr. Long conducted the Haydn’ Mass in the Time of War in Carnegie Hall.

JUSTIN RAFFA Originally from South Jersey, Justin is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ, where he received a bachelor’s degree in music education with a vocal concentration. Justin headed the Bisbee High School choral and theatre departments from 2003-06 before receiving a master’s degree in choral conducting at the University of Arizona. At graduation, Justin received Outstanding Graduate Student Leadership Awards from both the Graduate & Professional Student Council and the Center for Student Involvement & Leadership, in addition to being nominated for the 2008 Arizona Governor’s Arts Award. While in Arizona, Justin was an active member of the Arizona Music Educators Association and served on the Arizona Choral Directors Association state board as Repertoire & Standards Chair for Community Choirs. Justin is a proud founding member of True Concord and is excited about the growth the organization has seen over the years. Justin moved to the Tri-Cities, WA in summer 2008 where he has served as Artistic Director of the Mid-Columbia Mastersingers. He was recently appointed Chorusmaster of the Yakima Symphony Chorus and is active on several boards and commissions in his community, including his role as Repertoire & Standards Chair for Community Choirs in Washington State ACDA. He continues to perform as a chorister with Male Ensemble Northwest and Chor Anno, two regional ensembles made up of professional choral musicians from across the Pacific Northwest.
