November is THE ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH–RotaryisHumanityinMotion.

When I first joined Rotary in 1986, the first obligation Ilearned was the payment of dues. The others were toachieve at least 60% attendance of the regular weeklymeetingsandtoserveintwoavenues.

(For your reading pleasure, I have enclosed the article in this Berita Pudu.)

LetusrememberthatTheRotaryFoundationisnolongera small foundation addressing small needs. It has thepotential to takeon largerprojects that tackle issueswehavecometounderstandwell, providedwehavesufficientfinancialresources.

To do that, Rotary needs a strong endowment that willcontinueandprovidesupportforthefuture.Itisabundantlyclear toallofushowendless is theneedforhelp inourworld,howlimitlesstheopportunitiesforidealofservice.Poverty,disease,ignorance,andhatredcastdarkshadows.Thereismuchmorewecando,andnowistheidealtimeto do it. Newcoatsforchildren

ByRyanHyland

As another U.S. winter approaches, Rotarian RichardSanfordandhisPennsylvania-basednonprofitorganization,Operation Warm, are gearing up to provide low-incomechildrenwiththeproperappareltosurvivethebittercold.

In 1998, Sanford, a member of the Rotary Club ofLongwood, read a local newspaper article about childrensufferingincoldweatherwhilewaitingfortheirschoolbusbecausetheylackedwintercoats.

Angered but also inspired, he decided to take action, launchingOperationWarm, whichworkswithmanufacturersto provide high-quality unused coats to underprivilegedchildrenacrosstheUnitedStates.

“I couldn’t understand how something like this couldhappen.Itbrokemyhearttoseekidsfreezebecausetheydidn’t have warm-enough coats,” recalls Sanford, theorganization’sCEOandchair.

Throughfundsdonatedbyprivateandcorporatepartners,Operation Warm collaborates with manufacturers todevelopsizesandstylesforboysandgirls, thendistributesthecoatstoneedychildren.

Fortheorganization’sfirstprojectin1998,Sanfordpurchased58coatswithhisownmoneyfromadepartmentstore.Heand members of his Rotary club distributed the coats tochildreninalow-incomePhiladelphianeighborhood.Sincethen, Operation Warm has provided more than 500,000newcoatstochildrenin26states.

Rotary continues to play a crucial role in expanding thefundraising for and distribution of coats, says Sanford.About60clubs in theUnitedStateshaveworkeddirectlywith Operation Warm, providing more than 25,000 newcoatstochildren.

“Rotaryhasbeenphenomenalinoursuccess,”saysSanford.“This project truly represents what Rotary is all about:assistingthedisadvantagedinourcommunities.”

KimFremontFortunato, presidentoftheorganizationanda member of the Rotary Club of Wilmington, Delaware, says the quality of the coats is a key difference betweenOperationWarmandmanyothercoatdrives.

Newcoatsforchildren
