Remember John, in last week’s Gospel, envisioning a fearsome Messiah who would baptize “with the Holy Spirit and fire . . . winnowing fan in hand, clear[ing] the threshing floor and gather[ing] the wheat . . . but the chaff will burn in unquenchable

fire” (Matthew 3:11, 12)? This week, to John’s question, “Are you the one?” (Matthew 11:3), we might imagine John adding: “Because you sure don’t look like the One I was expecting!” Instead, John had heard that, far from gathering up wheat and burning chaff, Jesus was instead comforting, healing, forgiving. Though Isaiah clearly envisioned such a healing Messiah in today’s first reading, the Gentile occupation of Israel at Jesus’ time focused popular hopes on other scriptural visions: a warrior-Messiah driving out pagans, securing national liberation. So today, to those who would prefer that God act more decisively, even coercively, to inaugu-rate the Kingdom, Jesus proposes a new beatitude: “Blessed is the one who takes no offense at me” (Matthew 11:6), that is, at my gentle, compassionate way. Blessed too are those who take no offense at how long God takes. Millennia have passed since Isaiah’s vision and Jesus’ ministry, and still James exhorts us to be patient. The Kingdom’s growth, not to mention its harvest, takes time. Yet for James, “patient” does not mean “passive.” Humanity’s transformation should at least begin among believers, who are called not only to await but to anticipate the Lord’s coming. James’s program is practical and pointed, simple and succinct: “Do not complain . . . about one another” (5:9).

LETTER OF REVREND FATHER CAMILO BERNAL HADDAD SUPERIOR GENERAL OF THE CONGREGATION OF JESUS AND MARY TO THE EUDIST FAMILY

Rome, December 3, 2016 Dear Eudist confreres, With deep joy, I tell you that today (Saturday), in the morning, we had a very beautiful private audience with Pope Francis. In the private audience were Bishop Luc Crepy, Sr. Marie Françoise Le Brizaut, P. Gerson Mora and I. We were received in the pope's library, he was sitting at his desk and us in front on him; we were alone with him. After thanking the Holy Father for the audience, we introduced ourselves on behalf of the Eudist Family, bringing to his attention several of the Congregations we are part of this Eudist family, including the new Congregations that were born inspired by St. John Eudes and his spirituality. Then, we explained the reason for the visit: the cause of the doctorate of San Juan Eudes for which, we delivered the letter attached to the file brought to the Vatican… We expressed to him that the Eudist Family has a spiritual and pastoral heritage that can serve the Church in her evangelizing mission and that it is our intention to place this heritage in the hands of the Holy Father for the good of it. In the dialogue we focused on the person of Saint John Eudes as the Holy Father did not know him very well. Naturally, we also gave him the elements for the argumentation of the cause of our founder, previously elaborated by the commission of the cause, from the work done in France and Latin America last year. This brief argument was published, thanks to Bishop Crépy, in a 5-page fasciculus in Spanish, entitled "Saint John Eudes - Master of Christian Life". In a very natural and spontaneous way, Sister Marie Françoise spoke of the path of mercy in Saint John Eudes, of the various concrete services he rendered to the weakest, of his service to those affected by the plague, also of the "hospitals for the Soul " he devised for women ... and, of course, the spiritual development that St. John Eudes made on the subject of the Heart of Mary and the Heart of Jesus. Afterwards, I had to share with him on Saint John Eudes as a missionary, his work in the renewal of baptismal life in Christians, the publications he made for this purpose, his preaching, his pedagogy, the centrality of baptism ... in particular I spoke of the mission in Autun (France) and also the effects of his missions on the renewal of the Christian life in several dioceses. Bishop Luc presented St. John Eudes as the formator of the faithful and of the clergy. Bishop Luc placed particular emphasis on the formation of Jesus in the heart of the Christian believer and in the particular “formation mission” of every priest. Of course, he insisted well on the work of John Eudes in priestly formation and his spirituality at the service of priests. The Holy Father interrupted spontaneously, with the simplicity that characterizes him, with small affirmations; He showed interest on the subject. From time to time he also made a joke; we laughed and continued with the brief presentation. We presented to the Holy Father some gifts: The book on Saint John Eudes written by Bishop Luc and Sister Marie Françoise. The “Cahier Eudiste” # 23, Saint John Eudes doctor of the Church? Which he already knew thanks to the good services of Cardinal

Baltazar Porras. The small booklet “Let’s pray with Saint John Eudes” And the Eudist lectionary On the last two items, we expressed to him that they were for him personally and to please keep them. He nodded benevolently. We also gave him a beautiful painting of the "Virgin Mother" which he contemplated with deep sweetness, commenting on the tenderness of this image. Sister Marie Françoise told him that St. John Eudes always had this image on his desk and that he made himself accountable to the "Virgin Mother" after all his missions; just as Pope Francis does when he visits, whenever he travels on a Papal visit, to the Virgin Mary in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Finally, dear brothers, I was carrying the "cross of Saint John Eudes" in the inner pocket of my coat, which Saint John Eudes used in his missions, and which always remains on the desk of the Superior General. I showed it to the Holy Father, who was standing, then he took the cross in his hands; In his face he reflected a deep joy, he kissed the cross, looked at it, kissed it again and returned it to me. It was a deep and intimate moment. Then he said, "As you have spoken to me several times of mercy, wait a moment there." He then walked to a side door, opened it, and took several books. He returned and, to each of us in our native language, gave us his book "The name of God is mercy." In addition, he immediately handed us a white envelope to each one, which contained several rosaries and prints as a memento of our visit. To conclude the audience, he told us: "I will pass this on to the Congregation of the Cause of Saints". We told him: "Holy Father, we did not want to initiate this cause without having this dialogue with you before. We thank you for your kindness and benevolence with us. "He said," Okay, I understand the process you wanted to do. "He said good-bye to each one at the door of his library and, as usual, he said, 'Pray for me.' Now, let us continue praying for the cause of the doctorate of San Juan Eudes. Camilo, cjm

Be aware of the difference between accidental and suspicious bruises . . Many children play hard, and can suffer bruises or injuries as a result. With some injuries, it’s hard to tell whether they are a result of too much roughhousing or abusive treat-ment. Follow this guideline to assess a child’s bruising. Most accidental bruises are in common locations – knees, elbows, and foreheads. In contrast, bruises on a child’s neck or back could indicate potential mis-treatment or abuse. Although kids should be allowed to explore and learn their limits, suspicious bruises are warning signs that should not be ignored.

MINISTERIOS Y GRUPOS
