FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” Isaiah 60:1 Welcome to the season of Epiphany at Peace Lutheran Church. It is a season where we celebrate the many bright spots of Christ’s light shining in our church. Sometimes it seems like there is a lot more bad news than good news in our world. But that simply is not true. We just don’t

hear much good news. That is why I always pay close attention to the last few minutes of ABC World News Tonight with David Muir. He offers great examples of light shining in the darkness. John’s Gospel speaks true and hopeful words. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” John1:5 Yes! The light of Christ is alive and well in your church! Here are a few examples.

The Light Shines: … In our Sunday School where dedicated teachers, each and every week, engage our children to be disciples to help them grow as Christians.

… Mo and Vicar Dara, along with many volunteers, lead our middle school students in our confirmation program and assist these young people to discern what it means to “reaffirm their baptismal covenant.” … In our Adult Education classes where the theme is “Biblical Literacy.” Elsewhere in this newsletter you will notice 3 weekly opportunities to explore God’s word for our lives. Wonderful light shining. … By serving the community with our Little Free Pantry. This pantry was dedicated on 12/11 and will serve as Christ’s light for our neighbors who are not easily able to meet everyday food or personal needs. You can provide more light by restocking this free neighborhood ministry. … With our Call Committee. There is excitement in the air. All paperwork has been submitted and now the interview process will begin to secure the best Pastor for the future of Peace Lutheran. At our Annual Meeting on January 29th an update will be shared. … With you—Yes the light will shine as you pray, give of your time and talents, and do your part in this corner of Christ’s kingdom.

The Light is Shining and will continue to Shine. God Bless you and your loved ones.

Interim Pastor Dennis E Ellisen

I’m not a fan of winter—particularly the cold. As a kid I used to really enjoy winter, but somewhere along the line my body changed to a state of being cold ALL the time, and well… that got to be really annoying really quickly, so now that I’m in my 30s I kind of make it a point to hole up in my house on cold winter days. I’d like to say that during that time I’m inside I’m doing productive things such as cleaning, or laundry, or running on a treadmill, but the full truth of it is that I spend my holed up time watching a whole lot of Netflix or going to movies with my husband. And sometimes when I do that, I find my faith gets a little bit deeper in the most unexpected of ways.

This became a consistent thing when I started seminary, but when I think back in life I think it was happening before then. I see a movie that’s in no way at all related to my faith or my religion, and somehow I hear something deeply meaningful or faithful in it. Sometimes those meaningful or faithful things are very clear things, yet at other times they come to me days after watching a movie or tv series. Take, for example, the Lord of the Rings (confession: I’m a LOTR junkie). I’m convinced that Samwise Gamgee is Jesus. What other friend would pick you up and carry you when you’re bearing a heavy load of life while trying to climb a mountain that’s spewing lava onto you? And in the TV series The Office, people don’t get much more foolish and ridiculous as Michael Scott, but SOMEHOW the people around him almost

ALWAYS give him grace despite his foolishness, kind of like how God always gives us grace despite our foolishness. Also, if you’ve seen the newest Star Wars flick (Rogue One) the character Chirrut Imwe is a new role model for me...I won’t go any deeper into that in case you haven’t seen it. I don’t want to be THAT person who spoils it for you, but if you have seen it, I think you can see how he’s a great role model for any person of faith.

Anyway, my point is this, my dear People of Peace. If you are anything like me and prefer to hole up with your family during the winter and spend your hours plopped in front of a television for the sake of staying warm, there ARE ways to make it meaningful for all. The next time you gather together with your family for a movie night, perhaps at bedtime talk about where you saw someone giving or receiving forgiveness in the movie. Or perhaps ask the question, “Who do you think was the most like God in this movie?” Your own responses and the responses of those around you might just surprise you!

Happy movie watching to all! Stay WARM!

-Vicar Dara

THOUGHTS FROM THE VICAR

GREETINGS, As I thought about what I was going to write about this month, all that kept coming to my mind was new beginnings. We saw many new beginnings at PLC this last year. Pastor John taking a new call, Pastor Dennis serving as our Interim, Vicar Dara serving as our intern, a Call Team in place and working very hard, Kim in the office, a Free Little Pantry, the Bible initiative, and the list goes on and on. I think we are doing a great job with all of these new beginnings keeping the momentum going in the right direction. Along with that, we are in a new year and I can only imagine what new beginnings we will all see in 2017. I want to remind everyone that on January 15th there will be a budget forum to go over the budget for the new year. It will be between services in the lounge. Please plan to attend as this will be your time to ask questions regarding the new budget.

Also please mark your calendar for the annual meeting which will take place on January 29th. It will also be between services. A few other things coming up, there will be a chili cook-off on February 12th along with a cribbage tournament. Please plan on joining us for this fun event. I believe this is the third one. If you have never attended one before you will be in for a treat as we have superb chili chefs making their very best chili. So come hungry and join the fun. You will be glad you did! Happy New Year to all and here's to new beginnings whatever they may be. I hope you all have a wonderful and prosperous new year. Be a blessing where you can.

Peace,

Jean Andersen, Leadership President

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

CALL TEAM

Please continue to keep our call team in your prayers as they continue the process.

CALL PROCESS UPDATE Hello, I’m Cori Stromberg from the Call Team. I just wanted to update everyone on the progress of the Call Team efforts to find a new pastor for Peace. We have had several meetings discussing the process and the questions we would like to ask a prospective candidate for pastor. On Wednesday, November 30th, we met with Pastor Amy Engebose and Jill Roznowski from our Synod office to discuss the Call Process and answer any questions we had. Since then, Mary Davis and Jean Anderson worked hard to complete our Ministry Site Profile online. This is what the Synod uses to match us up with candidates they believe would be a good match for Peace. This profile was reviewed, finalized and submitted to the Synod on December 9th. Now we wait for the Synod to submit to us names of candidates to interview. This will take some time, as Christmas is a very busy time for churches and pastors.

To help us communicate with the members of Peace, there is a poster on the wall in the hallway outside the offices. It shows a timeline of the steps in the Call Process and shows exactly where we are in that process. That way anyone can look at it and see where we are now and what the next step will be. Please keep in mind, the Call Process takes time and all of us on the Call Team are deeply invested and want to find the best pastor for our needs at Peace. This may take longer than we expect, but we would rather take as much time as we need, than to rush and hire a pastor that might not be right for us. Please feel free to ask any questions to any of the members of the Call Team, and if we don’t know the answer to a question, we can find out for you. Thank you for your prayers and support in this important time at Peace.

God Bless, Cori Stromberg

MEMBER INFORMATION

OPENING THE BOOK OF FAITH, Lutheran Insights & Methods for Bible Study Starts on January 8 — Offered at 3 different times each week —A time for Everyone

We are a church whose unity is in Jesus Christ, who gathers us around word and water, wine and bread. We believe that people meet God in Scripture, where God’s relationship to — and intention for — humankind is revealed. Therefore, we encourage you to dig deeper into our book of faith — the Bible, so that together we grow in our deep engagement with the word of God.

For many, the encounter with Scripture is limited to the excerpts that are read on Sunday morning. Many of us are somewhat intimidated and unsure of how to engage Scripture. These sessions are a great place to start. A great place to open the book, learn some key insights and ways to study the Word, and discuss this with each other.

So ... let’s get started! Open Scripture. Join the Conversation.

Sign up for the sessions that meet your schedule and get the book in time for January 8.

Offered at three different times each week: • Sundays 9:15 am in the Conference Room, Lead by Dara, on Jan. 8, 15, 22, Feb. 5, 12, 19, & 26 • Mondays at 11:15 am, Lead by Mo, on Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13, & 20 • Wednesdays at 6:30 pm, Various Leaders, on Jan. 11, 18, 25, Feb. 1, 8, 15 & 22 NOTE: A book purchase is needed for this course: “Opening The Book Of Faith: Lutheran Insights For Bible Study.” ISBN# 9780806680569. We will do a group order from Augburg which is $12.99. OR— Used versions of this book are available from various sellers on Amazon.com for $3.99, so you can choose to purchase those on your own if you’d like to get the cheaper price. Indicate your purchase choice when you sign up for the sessions.

in the history of Christianity.

ADULT STUDY GROUP Sunday Night Multi-Gender Adult Study Update! If you have noticed distinct similarities between Matthew, Mark and Luke (the Synoptic Gospels), you’re not the first. But why are they so alike? The earliest attempt to explain these likenesses comes from the renowned 5th century cleric Augustine of Hippo. Biblical scholars, historians, theologians and lay people have been debating this Synoptic Problem ever since.

Actually, the Synoptic Problem provides an excellent starting point for studying the historical origins of the New Testament. Contrary to what some people may think, the New Testament didn’t suddenly appear in its current form. Yes, it’s the canon of Christian faith — but it’s also a collection of ancient documents that represent an incredibly interesting history.

The so-called Peace Lutheran Sunday Night Multi-Gender Adult Study Group will take up the Synoptic Problem by examining one of the predominate current views called the Four Source Hypothesis. We’ll meet on January 15th at the home of Eric and Janell Duwell at 1895 Hickory Lane, Oshkosh. The program starts at 7:00pm and is scheduled for 90 minutes.

No prior knowledge of the topic is required. You do not have to be a scholar, an adult, or even a member of Peace Lutheran to participate. The only requirements are a mind open to learning and a willingness to ask questions.

If it sounds interesting, you’re warmly invited to attend. Come, learn, question, talk. It’s fun and easy! Questions? Call E.R. Waskawic at 920-685-5396 or send an email to [email protected].

How Can The Bible Be Studied? BIBLE STUDY METHODS The Book of Faith Initiative recommends a 4-fold method of reading Scripture. For many of us, the encounter with Scripture is limited to the excerpts that are read on Sunday morning. Many of us—and many of our neighbors—are biblically illiterate, unsure of how to engage Scripture. Many of us are unaware of the rich Lutheran insights that have been helpful in understanding the many ways that God engages us through the Bible. The challenge of Book of Faith is to address these realities directly and to experience more fully the power of the Word.

1. DEVOTIONAL READING We begin by reading the Bible text and reflecting on its meaning. We ask questions and identify items that are unclear. We bring our unique background and experience to the Bible, and the Bible meets us where we are.

2. HISTORICAL READING We seek to understand the world of the Bible and locate the setting of the text. We explore who may have written the text and why. We seek to understand the particular social and cultural contexts that influenced the content and the message. We wonder who the original audience may have been. We think about how these things “translate” to our world today.

3. LITERARY READING We pay close attention to how the text is written. We notice what kind of literature it is and how this type of literature may function or may be used. We look at the characters, the story line, and the themes. We compare and contrast these with our own understanding and experience of life. In this interchange, we discover meaning.

4. LUTHERAN THEOLOGICAL READING We consider the Lutheran principles that help ground our interpretation of the Bible text. We ask questions that bring those principles and unique Lutheran theological insights into conversation with the text. We discover how our Lutheran insights can ground and focus our understanding and shape our faithful response to the text. Devotional reading; we return to where we started, but now we have explored and experienced the Bible text from four different dimensions. We are ready to move into the “for” dimension. We have opened Scripture and joined in conversation for a purpose. We consider the meaning of the text for faithful living. We wonder what God is calling us (individually and as communities of faith) to do. We consider how God’s Word is calling us to do God’s work in the world.

Come and learn more about these in session 3 on January 22 at 9:15 am, Monday Jan 23 at 11am, or Wednesday Jan 25 6:30 pm

...could keep these kids from doing their Sunday School Christmas Program! Yes, the brutal Wisconsin winter weather did all it could to interfere with the schedule. We even had to cancel our big rehearsal the day before. So our kids arrived at Church Sunday morning without having had a full run-through. Sure, we’d been practicing our reading parts and songs for weeks, but we never had the chance to put it all together before it was “show time.” However — thanks to the talent and determination of our students and the guidance of our teachers, everything went off pretty much as planned during the 10:30 service on Sunday, December 18. This year’s program, called Twelve Symbols of Christmas, was adapted from an original script by Felicia

Mollhan. The program used short readings and Bible excerpts to explain how twelve common things are symbolically linked to the Christmas story. In between readings, the Sunday Schoolers performed very spirited renditions of both traditional and contemporary Christmas music. The Sunday School wants to acknowledge our sincere gratitude to Janell Duwell and Erin Tedesco for providing musical support, and to Jed Carlson for being our go-to audio-visual technician. PARENTS: Sunday School will resume our normal schedule on January 8. There are lots of fun activities planned and plenty to learn, so please, let’s keep levels of attendance and participation up!

Fresh new study starting up January 9, 2017. 6 week study will meet at 7pm

on 1/9, 1/23, 2/13, 2/27, 3/13 and 3/27 at First English church in the Mary Martha room.

Clothed with Power by Jennifer Kennedy Dean. Workbook available on Amazon. Back cover reads as follows…

"The Holy Spirit is always at work in the life of a believer. He chooses to work, however, in each individual life almost like a tailor-made suit--one that is custom-fit for the individual. His perfect fit is designed to draw attention to our best features and diminish our weaknesses. Clothed with Power helps you explore how the Holy Spirit is at

work in every area of your life. Designed as a six-week interactive study, national best-selling author and prayer expert Jennifer Kennedy Dean uses the symbolism of the Old Testament priests' garments to show you anew how your salvation has always been a part of God's redemptive plan. And, how it is through that salvation that the Holy Spirit is the living Jesus in you now--making you fit for heaven's work here on earth. An accompanying DVD to this study is also available."
