He suffered daily beatings by the Japanese. He endured the pain of maggots in his toe to ward offgangrene in his ulcerated foot. After months of building a railroad and bridges by hand in thejungle, he felt his clothes disintegrate from his body. Upon his return home, he battled malaria anddepression. Edgbert Thomas Hudson, 89, is now at peace.Wise County's last surviving member of Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 131st Field Artilleryof the 36th Division, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, at his home on Lake Bridgeport.The 400 soldiers from Wise County, Jacksboro, Wichita Falls and Abilene became known as theLost Battalion. Their whereabouts was unknown for 3 1/2 years as prisoners of war of the Japaneseon Java. Their experience has been chronicled in books and movies. Ed Hudson lived thoseexperiences and was among the lucky few who returned home to tell about it. Like his comrades,he found it difficult to relive those 3 1/2 years but later found the strength to talk through annualreunions of the Lost Battalion.In a 2005 interview in the Wise County Messenger, Hudson described his survival tactics:"I lived it six months at a time. I survived through courage and determination...that's the key tomost anything."Hudson never took his freedom for granted."People talk about freedom and why we're in Iraq. You get it taken away from you and you realizehow important it is to you," he said in the interview.Hudson returned to his hometown of Bridgeport after the war, raised a family and built a successfulbusiness.He was born Sept. 22, 1918, in Bridgeport to Thomas N. and Annie N. Woodard Hudson. He waspreceded in death by his first wife, Gladys Mae Green and his brother, Chesley Hudson.He married Bettye Leonard on Oct. 30, 1992, in Fort Worth. He was a member of the First BaptistChurch in Bridgeport, the Disabled American Veterans and the Wise County Veterans Group. Hewas a retired 25-year member of the Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department and was the retiredowner and operator of Hudson Butane of Bridgeport.His fellow veterans from the Wise County Veterans Group were to provide military honors at hisfuneral Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hawkins Funeral Home.
