I am Suzanne (Sue) Hammonds.  My husband Dale and I own and operate S & D Morgans near Wautoma, WI. I currently work as a CNA at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI.  We currently have 1 stallion, 6 mares, 2 two year old geldings, and 1 yearling colt, with two mares in foal for the coming spring. We show in English, Western, Pleasure Driving, In Hand, and Carriage divisions.  We also trail ride and drive our pair of palomino mares on a wagon and my favorite winter activity, driving the pair on the sleigh.  My first introduction to a Morgan horse occurred while I attended the University of Minnesota, Crookston majoring in Equine Management.  I bought Sparkle Plenty, my first Morgan, from Mona in 1978.  I continued to work at Bonnie Lee during summers and school breaks until eventually Mona asked me to fill in as trainer for her.  I continued in this position for about 15 years.  Along the way I acquired Sir's Sunny, palomino stallion, and began breeding, raising, training, and showing my own horses.  After Sunny had an accident and had to be put down, I acquired Red Rose Moonshine, cremello stallion. To date I have sold horses from California to Virginia, and managed to show Moonshine at the Grand National and World championship Show in the carriage division bringing home several ribbons.  My goal has been to raise beautiful and competitive palomino Morgans.

I am honored to be on the board of the Wisconsin Morgan Horse Club.  I look forward to working with all the dedicated Morgan owners and members to promote our wonderful Morgan Breed. I will be open to suggestions and new ideas for Morgan activities and promotions.  Send me an email or call anytime.  [email protected], 920-765-1499

Please Welcome another of you 2017 Directors

A smiling Debbie with the drawing prize.

Summary from Balanced Nutrition Presentation at January meeting.

You need to feed for the horse: age, amount of work, maintenance, health, metabolic rate, feeding requirements will vary for individuals.

Since forage is the largest portion of most horse’s ration it’s important to test the hay. That is done by taking core samples from several bales and sent into a lab. The hay analysis will list several values, but the important ones for evaluating hay for horses are NDF (Neutral Detergent Fiber), ADF (Acid Detergent Fiber), Protein, NSC (Non-Structural Carbohydrates), and Relative Feed Value.

• Protein needs vary for individual needs, maintenance for a mature horse on maintenance is 8-10%• NDF and ADF values will predict the palatability of the hay, higher values mean the plant was more

mature making it less palatable and less desirable. • For metabolic horses you want the NSC less than 12%, tells how much sugar is present• Relative feed value is based on the quality of hay, alfalfa hay is @100, more grass will be around 80

Other feeding components to consider:• Energy sources: Carbs, fats, protein, is important when feeding young growing horses.• If you are feeding a thin horse it takes at least 30 days to see results.• Horses drink 10-15 gallons of water a day for maintenance, and they prefer water between 45-65⁰F. You

can offer water to a hot horse, during hard work, if heart rate and breathing are normal, but only 2 gallons at a time.

• Horses really can’t get enough salt from licking a salt block, you can top dress up to 2 oz loose salt a day.• Use a weight tape and log once a month to monitor weight.• Feed by weight not volume.• Avoid sudden feeding changes, do over 7-10 period, only changing 1/2 lb. a day.• Keep up regular de-worming, exercise, ventilation, and dental health.

You can visit https://www.drschoicesupplements.com to see a full listing of Dr.’s Choice Supplements horse and companion animal products.

**And a totally unsolicited recommendation, I feed Dr.’s Choice Daily Start Probiotic, it helps with gut health for horses that get loose manure and better utilization of feed, the Laxative after a sand colic scare last fall, and the Fido-Vite Flexx to keep DeeDee and Piper super happy too!

Greetings to all Members from Char-Dan Morgans. It’s hard to believe that spring is around the corner. We are not expecting any foals this spring, but are looking forward to continue the training for the three we had in 2016.

Spring of 2016 gave us quite a diversity of color. JKM Platnum Pizzazz, Perlino colt (Ragtime Doc Holliday x Prairie Hill Prima Donna), JKM Misty Morn, black to turn gray filly (Amberfields Steel Magnum x Kells Hallelujah Morn), and JKM Cinnamon Honey, palomino dun filly (Royal Gold Ariston x Red Rose Cinnamon).

All three foals are developing nicely and showing personality! The perlino colt was nicknamed “Duke” because, in his own mind; he is larger than life. His favorite occupation right now is to try and take the lead rope out of your hands and lead his mom in. He is still working on perfecting that technique. The gray filly, “ Grace”, shows a lot of athleticism, Her favorite occupation is trying to get the jump on Duke. And, sometimes she does get the best of him!. The Palomino filly, Honey, is growing up tall! She shows a lot of independence and bravery but still loves the attention of people.

We are anxiously awaiting the warmer weather. We hope to get to a few shows this year and get together with friends we haven’t seen in awhile. Check out our website!! We have some lovely stock available for sale, just awaiting a good home! Karin and Jarrett Miller Your babies are so cute! Have fun training. ed.

Minglewood Farm:The spell of warm weather provided just the excuse a couple of my more adventurous mares needed to slip the fence in search of grass to dig up. They stay near the house, visiting the horses in the other two pastures, but it's sometimes a surprise to have a curious Morgan walking up to you in the dark morning, nickering hello! Then we had the rains, and the juice started flowing in the fence again, so they took a break from their Houdini act until just this past week. The youngest, Minglewood Dream On (Em-Jac’s Tenacity x Big Bend Infinite Illusion), has been up to her old tricks on her own this time and wounded a pastern on the rope. My vet, Judy Batker of Country View Equine, says there is no such thing as a safe fence for horses. Fortunately, DeeDee didn't injury anything important internally and we just have to nurse Miss Gimp along for a

couple weeks while she heals up. I think the horses are all bored and impatient for spring, grass and fun with humans to resume. Darned groundhog!Debbie

S & D Morgans. Happy New Year to everyone.  This winter we have been able to enjoy giving friends sleigh rides but have not been able to use the sleigh as much as I like because of the ice. We do hope to participate in the sleigh day in Columbus in Feb.

Looking toward Spring, we are expecting two foals in May. The first will be out of CBMF Red Hot Chili Pepper and the second will be out of Elk Creek Crystal Clear. This mare is a grand daughter of my first Morgan. Both babies are by Red Rose Moonshine and will be palomino. We are hoping for fillies. |

For anyone anticipating bringing your horse to Midwest Horse Fair, now is the time to start the shedding out process.  I have had great success putting a light in the stall.  I connect the light to a timer and set the timer so that the horse has light in the stall for 16 hours per day. If the horse is turned out, subtract the daylight time from 16 hours and set the timer accordingly.   It is not necessary to put a blanket on the horse until shedding starts. I would start putting my horse under light no later than February 1 to have the shedding complete in time for Horse Fair. Enjoy winter, it will soon be gone. Dale and Sue Hammonds

Looking BackI hope/ plan to print a picture and little story, from every member in the newsletter in 2017. Find a picture of you and your first horse, first Morgan, early Morgan, much loved horse - whichever picture and story you chose to share. Wouldn’t you like to help roll back the mists of time?! If you don’t have a scanner, have someone else scan the picture for you. Here are 2 members, younger, with well-remembered horses. editor

Here’s an old photo of me and my  2nd Morgan, Devilwood Chaucer, who I bought from Stuart and Annie Randall.  He was an unbroke 2-year-old in this photo taken in May, 1987 at Pat and Jim Ziegler’s B-Hawk Morgan Farm, Sauk City.  His dam was one of Annie & Stuart’s first foundation broodmares, Bridlesweet Danseuse from Parm Harris’s farm and his sire was Big Bend Blarneystone, an Applevale Storm King son from Doris Norton’s farm.     I was 33 years old in this photo. Glady Mikk's Gay Glady [Gay Commander x Flit] was my first horse--the one I'd always dreamed of while reading every horse story in the public library of my Chicago suburb growing up. We'd already owned a Morgan--Tribute, my daughter Meg's gelding, Glady’s half-brother--for 7 years when we acquired Glady. But she was the first horse to be truly mine. It was thanks to the drought of 1988 we acquired Glady. On trips to Iowa, we always used to stop and visit the Epleys, Tribute's breeders, on their farm in Solon. We were admiring their broodmares in the pasture when Don Epley mentioned they were having to cut back on stock because of the drought. Pointing to Glady, I commented "There's one I know you'll never sell." "No, she's on the sales list." "No, she's not!" From the first day she arrived in Wisconsin Glady was in charge of the herd. She was only 14.2 hands at the shoulder, but this small bay mare, even in advanced pregnancy, packed a mean kick and nip. No horse on the place dared to approach a human in the field before Glady had her chance at a carrot. Of course, once she had her carrot, she'd dart off before a rope could be put on her, leaving the other horses to be caught. She even had the humans disciplined. On entering the barn, there would be an imperious nicker from a beautifully sculpted head, large-eyed, topped with tiny ears, thrust over the stall door, demanding her tribute of carrots. If you dared to ignore her, or stopped at another stall on the way to hers, the rump would be turned to face you, and if she were really irritated, the stall would ring with angry kicks. Once homage was paid, however, she was perfectly willing to allow you to indulge other horses--after her preeminence was recognized. During her show career, her "look-at-me!" attitude ensured she was never out of the ribbons, while even at 20, you could recognize Glady from a quarter-mile away as she pranced out through the hayfields with her "parade walk".

A wonderful mother, she raised 9 foals, instilling good manners along with her milk. A stable owner once commented, "You know, Glady and her offspring are the neatest horses I've ever known--they only soil one corner of their stalls!" Her motherliness wasn't limited to her foals, either. Put a child aged 6 or under on Glady, and she was the perfect babysitter. She would proceed around the ring at a careful walk, listening to the child's hand on the reins--as long as an adult walked alongside. She didn't need to be on a lead rope, but if an adult didn't walk next to her, she wouldn't move a step with that precious burden. Carrying a small child on her back was the only time you would see Glady "flat-walk". Glady never forgot anything. When I purchased her, at age 14, she had been retired to the broodmare band for 8 years. At 15, I saddled her up for her first ride in 9 years, and she was perfect! Impeccably mannered, she circled the ring, taking the correct cue for each gait. The same thing happened when I harnessed her for her first drive in 10 years--she walked off, pulling the cart, without hesitation. Glady died December 13, 1994, in her 21st year, carrying what would have been her 10th foal. We buried her on a rise where the hay-meadow met the woods, and we could visit her on our trail rides. Jubilee Joy’s sire, Flyhawk, was one of the most influential Morgan sires of the first half of the 20th century. “Producing 97 registered offspring, Flyhawk's lines became one of the most popular in the Midwest in the 1950s. Flyhawk was noted for his big, ground-covering trot, dense bone, toughness and athleticism, and he passed these traits to his get. He was extremely intelligent and steady. By his death at the age of 32, his get could be found from coast to coast. Some of his most influential offspring include The Brown Falcon, Warhawk, Stetson, Jenny Lake, Santana, Gallant King, Illiniwek, Betsy Ross and Shadow Hawk.” ."—Katherine Firch, “The Brunk Stallions—The Dynasties”, Simply Morgan, May/June 2002, p10. Her dam, Sentola, was a full sister to Jubilee King. Sentola’s sire was Penrod (Allen Franklin x Black Bess) and her dam, Daisette, was by Senator Knox out of Daisy de Jarnette (Jubilee de Jarnette x Ben’s Daisy). Sentola “was born one year to the day after her famous brother, Jubilee King.“ Jubilee Joy was Sentola's seventh foal, and first by Flyhawk. This was the start of another dynasty. Jubilee Joy was the dam of Celebration, Foxfire, Mickey Finn, Torchfire, Sweet Talk, La Joya, Highview Honey and Belafina, and was rated one of the top ten Morgan mares in the United States by Marilyn Childs. She was also a very successful show horse, with an exquisite head and eye. According to Helen Brunk Greenwalt ‘She had a natural fine action and style. Thursday 20th: Early bird helpers will arrive as early as 8 am but any help any time would be appreciated. Please also remember that we could use “your no longer in use” drapes for inside actual horse stalls as well as our dressing and tack areas. Plywood is for rent from MHF; however, we are trying to avoid further expenses. We also will have 2 different times to practice our 10 minute demonstration and can use lots of help “on the ground”. When and where of DEMO practice times to be shared from MHF coordinators in early February. No cost to get in Thursday.

Friday 21st: 8 am early opening shift is covered. Volunteers are needed for shifts the rest of the day.

You will be needed to answer questions, stock up on and give out supplies and promotional materials and play games and award prizes. The later aspect was such a hit last year and we gained rave reviews. We also gather entries for the daily Breyer model give away-that brings in the kids who bring their parents who want to know more about our Morgans. Any $1-type items that you would like to donate to our “prizes” will be greatly appreciated.

I realize that it is hard to commit when we don’t know all the event times yet, but if you can, please commit to a couple of times at least one day or more days if possible:

10 am – Noon

Noon- 2 pm

2 pm – 4 pm

4 pm – 6 pm

If you have a horse of your own to promote, remember, this year the MHF Coordinators are adamant that there will be NO INDIVIDUAL SALES FLYERS posted anywhere. WMHC will have a special APRIL NEWSLETTER that will feature such individual ads. Please contact Editor, Mary Ellen Gray for details and get your paid advertisement to her per the instructions that she will provide.

Saturday 22nd: Same times as Friday – volunteers are needed. Sunday 23rd: The early 8 am shift needs a couple of volunteers and the shifts through 6 pm are in need too. We will probably start the “take down” at 5 pm; so, even if you have not signed up before, please consider stopping over and lending a hand to get everything down and into storage containers and to the trailer.

Please email [email protected] or phone Lauraine: 608-576-2969 with your availability. This is a Club event so plan to sign a WAIVER before starting to help.

Winter Parade Preparation

Now that I have cleaned and sold my family home, I have had the time to clean up at my home. After a couple of rainy parades, our tack and trailer began to smell and grow mold. First the saddle blankets were washed and dried in September. Then I cleaned and organized the trailer. Now, on bad winter weather days, I have started cleaning and repairing bridles and saddles. Never have I cleaned tack in the house, but the icy roads gave me the opportunity. The light is dim, but it is a relaxing way to spend a winter afternoon. I did learn that Neatsfoot oil is very good for winter-dry hands. This has also given me the opportunity to check tack for needed repairs well in advance of the summer riding season.

I should have 4 bridles and two western saddles ready to go. It is always a good idea to carry more than you need in case a rider has a broken bridle or stirrup and needs a replacement.

Happy Trails
