What makes a great community? There’s no single
recipe. But Middleton definitely has many of the
ingredients. A winner of numerous awards and a
perennial favorite on Money Magazine’s annual “Best
Places To Live,” Middleton has been widely recognized
as one of America’s most thriving communities. And
the same things that make Middleton a great place to
live also make it a great place to visit.
it's HEALTHIER here.
Physical activity and having fun are two ingredients in
the Middleton recipe for a healthy community. Nearly
every sporting endeavor seems to have its own venue
in Middleton. Soccer, hockey, baseball, basketball, ice
skating, golf, bowling—all can be enjoyed in facilities,
both indoor and outdoor, throughout Middleton. The
community also has a longstanding commitment to
building parks and trails, as evidenced by the 15-mile
trail system. It all adds up to a community where it’s
easy for residents to be healthy and perfect for visitors
looking to have fun, explore and be active.
it's bolder here.
Colorful, confident, bustling and vibrant—life in
Middleton can be big and bold. Discover things you’ll
find nowhere else. Visit the National Mustard Museum
and dive into the surprisingly fascinating world of
this ubiquitous condiment. Take a tour of the world-
renowned Capital Brewery and learn how this small-
town brewery came to be one of the most respected
in the world. Greenway Station, a chic assemblage of
upscale retailers and great restaurants, gives a whole
new twist to the shopping experience. At Middleton's
Orchid's Garden Centre and Nursery, you can discover
the fascinating world of orchids and learn about the
unique characteristics of these rare and beautiful flowers.
Even Middleton events—like the Capital Brewery Bock
Fest or the Centurion Cycling events—reflect this bigness
and boldness. To learn how Middleton came to be
such a dynamic place, stop by the Middleton Historical
Museum and learn about the community's founders.
HEALTHIER. bolder. greener. Life really is better in Middleton. But don’t take our word for it—experience
it for yourself.

it's greener here.
Middleton has a strong commitment to protecting the
environment and conserving energy. Middleton's 550-
acre Pheasant Branch Conservancy protects some of the
area’s most important freshwater springs. Enlightened
building practices, environmentally sound city policy,
responsible land-use and strong recycling programs
all reflect this commitment to greener living. A great
example is the new Middleton Ridge playground,
the area’s first environmentally-friendly playground,
which was built using methods that protect the area's
endangered Blanding’s turtles. Middleton’s newly built
Holy Wisdom Monastery has received awards for
being one of the most efficient and environmentally-
responsible buildings of its kind in the United States.

An award-winning community trail system winds its way through Middleton, connecting neighborhoods, parks and nature areas. Walk or bicycle your way from the bright and bustling Greenway Station to charming downtown Middleton and then to a quiet forest glade. The trail system encompasses 15 miles of trails, including a five-mile continuous trail connecting the far northeast side of Middleton with the far northwest side.
The Pheasant Branch Conservancy is one of the highlights of the trail system. The conservancy is a natural oasis amid a vibrant and growing community. The 550-acre nature area is a great place for birdwatching and wildlife viewing. Common sightings include great blue herons, a variety of frog species, white-tailed deer, sandhill cranes, several species of duck, Canada geese, hawks, owls and dozens of different species of songbird. Wildlife observation areas can be found on the conservancy’s South, East and West trails.
Bicyclists love Middleton. The bike-friendly community of Middleton is the site of a number of bicycle races
and rides, including Centurion Cycling events. The roads that run north and west from Middleton lead to some of the most popular bicycling routes in the Midwest, making Middleton the ideal hub for bicycling excursions. Pheasant Branch Road, Airport Road and the paved trail along Highway 12 are popular with bicyclists as “escape routes” into the scenic countryside.
After the snow arrives, trails throughout Middleton are professionally groomed for joggers and walkers, cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Throughout the winter, the Pleasant View Golf Course offers cross-country ski trail loops ranging from 0.5 to 2.3 miles. It is one of the area’s most popular cross-country skiing spots.
There are a number of other trail opportunities within a short drive of Middleton. Governor Nelson State Park is located on the shores of Lake Mendota, just minutes from downtown Middleton. The park offers eight miles of hiking trails through oak forests and restored prairies. Cross-country skiing is available in the winter. Hit the trails in Middleton and find out why it's greener here.

With its rolling landscape and ample
waterways, the Middleton area was
home to Native American tribes such
as the effigy-building Algonquins
and later, the Ho-Chunk. A fur-
trading post was established in
Middleton in 1832 at what is now
Mendota County Park. In 1836, W.
B. Slaughter platted the area, calling
it “City of Four Lakes,” intending this
newly established locale to become
the territorial capital.
In 1848, the area’s Postmaster, Henry
Barnes, named the area “Middleton,”
after a community in his home state
of Vermont. The first railroad depot
was built in 1856 with a sign that
said “Middleton Station.” Wheat
was king at the time, and the town
featured large grain elevators. The
first settlers in the area were English,
followed by Germans. For a time, the
local newspaper published a German
language supplement. When the
village incorporated in 1905, they
shortened the name to “Middleton.”
In 1963, Middleton became a city.
Middleton’s historic downtown was
renovated in the 1980s. Today, the
downtown is a stunning mix of
historic buildings and complementary
modern structures. The most recent
expansions include the additions of
North Lake and Middleton Hills,
which features Frank Lloyd Wright
inspired architecture.
One of the oldest structures in Middleton is the Stamm House, which dates back to 1847. It was Middleton’s first official inn and is thought to have been a station on the Underground Railroad. The Blacksmith Shop, which dates to the 1850s, would have served many of the travelers who came to the Stamm House.
The building that today houses the Club Tavern was built between 1860 and 1880 and served as the boarding house and stables for the Stamm House. The Club Tavern opened in 1921 and, interestingly, remained open throughout prohibition.
Important gathering places in Middleton included an Opera House, which once stood at the center of Parmenter Street. Built in 1855, the building included a hotel, saloon and second floor opera house which hosted medicine shows, masquerades, holiday dances, political rallies and graduations. It was destroyed in a fire in 1900. Nearby was the American House Hotel, which was built around 1870. It is also gone.
The nearby General Store, built in 1856, was known as “The Friendly Store,” perhaps in part because of the tavern located in the basement. What is today a Duplex was once the Union Church, built in 1970 at a cost of $1,800 to serve German Methodists and the Baptists. It later became an American Legion meeting
hall. Today’s popular restaurant Villa Dolce was once the Old Town Inn, which was the site of Middleton’s first post office. And the Pheasant Branch School, built in 1896 at a cost of $828, was acquired by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1954.
Significant homes include Wolf House, which was built in 1868 and saved from the 1900 fire by putting carpets on the roof and soaking them with water using a bucket brigade. The home is now privately owned. Whittlesey House, built between 1853 and 1855, was home to T.T. Whittlesey, a member of Congress, probate judge and influential citizen (University Avenue was once named Whittlesey Street). Palmer House was the area’s first home, which was built in 1847. The structure you see today was built in 1858.
Learn more about Middleton history by visiting the Middleton Historical Museum or the Middleton Train Depot—both important historic buildings in their own right. A respect for history— it's stronger here.
